Summertime news brief

Summer Fun, Concerts, Events to Plan for

The Sound of Caribbean—Come Listen, Learn to Play the Steel Drum
(Contributor: Blair Davis, edited by Jesse Seeley)
Come to a FREE practice concert tonight and hear the “sound of the Caribbean”—the steel drums. Tonight’s performance is more of a private gathering to see what is to come at this weekend’s “World Beat”. That will be something to come and see too, but there is admission to that performance (not sure of how much), but West Salem band members group called “Steel Time” will be playing the steel drums (pans) in making the sounds made famous in the Caribbean. “Steel Time” will be performing this Sunday (June 29th) at 4:00 p.m. in the “Americas Area”. Anyone that would like to enjoy some music or wants to learn how to play them next year during the school year should DEFINITELY come tonight and then to the “World Beat” event this Sunday. Here’s more specifics:
  • Tonight, Friday, June 27 Bush Park, at approximately 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 29 “World Beat” event will be playing at 4 p.m. (Editor’s note: at Bush Park I’m assuming, contributor didn’t specifically state)
For any questions concerning this, please contact Blair Davis via email at wublu07@yahoo.com

Band Camp Uniform Fittings
(Contributor: Deanna Garney)
We will need help from parents at this year’s band camp for fitting members for their Uniforms. We will need about 4-5 people for at least 4 separate evenings from 6-9pm. The first couple of nights we fit gloves and shoes. Then we fit uniforms & shakos (the band “hats”). I think the most help will be needed for the uniforms and shakos. You don't need to know how to sew. If you can hem pants that is a great value add to the team, but not necessary. It's easy to do and goes much quicker if there is plenty of help. Also, I think we will need at least 3-4 people to commit to helping with Football games and Competitions. It would be great if we had a designated “Plume” person.

For details, contact Deanna Garney via email at dg5758@comcast.net

Titan Auction—Still Seeking Help
(Contributor: Kami Hettwer)
We’re still seeking help for the 2008 Titan Auction. It’s not too soon to start thinking about this November 2008 event, so please mark it on your calendar. The Titan Foundation Auction will be held on November 22nd 2008. We need help collecting items for silent and oral auction and we need help selling tickets to the event. The more tables of 8 we sell the more money we get from our items we sell at the auction. Let's get a team together now so that we can start planning for next year's auction and raise needed funds in support of our great band program! For more information, please contact Kami Hettwer mkhett@aol.com.

Band Camp—Dates/Reminder
(Contributors: Kami Hettwer, Directors, Jesse Seeley)
There is an attached flyer with the below information as well as more detail on this upcoming event. We wanted to get the word out as soon as possible before all took off for the summer and also to better plan your summer vacations and to get this on your calendars right away. Studentsà tell any/all your friends at the Middle School level (that will be incoming freshmen) about this in the event they’d like to participate—many times they don’t find out or “get the word” because we don’t sent to a middle school distribution list and only siblings of other WSHS end up “in the know”. Below are the dates of both the “Pre-Camp” and the regular two-week session everyone knows as “Band Camp."

Mark your calendars now as this will creep up on us and our vacations. What better way to get to see the development of a great program but with a “front row seat” at every rehearsal (well, if you WANT to see every one J). • Help at the parent night potluck on Friday, August 22nd
