This Week’s Schedule
This week is a festival week. Please see the schedule in the band room for details.

Winter Percussion Festival Meeting Monday at 5:45 pm in the Band Room
Allison Baker and Jackie Maltzan have agreed to be the coordinators for the Winter Percussion Premier Competition scheduled for February 13, 2010 at WSHS. This is a great opportunity for West to get on the map for hosting competitions and should be a huge fundraiser for the band program at West.

There are a number of parents who have stepped up to lead the very important sub-groups. There are still a few openings we need leaders for. In addition, we will need a lot of volunteers for various jobs and tasks. If you are able to take on any of the open positions, please let Allison or Jackie know as soon as possible. If you have a specific area of skills or interests that you want to help with, please contact Allison, Jackie or the lead for that group.

Our challenge to the leads is this - please find 1 or 2 people that can be your right hand people. The more we have working on this project, the easier it will be. We will also be asking for a number of the band and color guard students to volunteer their time that day.

So, mark your calendars for February 13, 2010. It is going to be an amazing day!

Scrip: The Easiest Fundraiser Yet!
It is easy! Keep in mind that you are not “buying” scrip; you are "trading" money for gift certificate money for your daily purchases. If all of our band families could redirect $200/month to scrip monthly, we would generate an extra $800/month or more, for band!

What is new with scrip? Starting this week:
Jiffy Lube discount increases to 10%
- $5 Starbucks gift card denomination added
- $100 Prepaid VISA card denomination added
　Our first scrip order will be placed this week, Tuesday, 11/3, and be available for pick up Thursday. Thereafter, we will have the same weekly ordering schedule. Thank you to those who have already placed orders! Order forms will be available in both attached and in the band room next to the Scrip box. Titan Auction
There is still time left to be part of the fun. We have filled three tables and would like to fill three more. Remember you do not have to have a full table, let me know you want to go and we will put people together at a Band Booster table. Tickets are $35 per person. If you do wish to buy a table it seats 8 and is $280. For those of you who have already given me money for tickets, if you are wondering why your checks have not been cashed they are being turned in on Nov. 2nd at the Auction Committee meeting. Seats are selling out quickly, so please get in touch with Scotti soon if you want to attend.

We are still in need of donations. We have some really great ones so far, but really need some more. Let me know if you can donate something, or know someone who can donate. We have requested the Marching kids donate baskets this year. We are making a contest out of it. All section leaders were asked to get with their section and come up with a theme basket (thanks for the idea Marianna). The section who's basket earns the most at the auction will get a pizza party. Please ask you kids about this so they can keep it going. Baskets are due on November 2nd at marching practice. Each section should be sure to have a card attached with what section they are in and the name of the basket.

Christmas Trees
For those of you who did not make it to the last booster meeting we are adding something new this year, Christmas Trees! We are not doing a tree lot; these are preorder only. **Please see the attached order form.** This is a great idea for relatives, friends and neighbors. All the trees will be Noble Firs. You have a choice of:

5'-6' at $30
6'-7' at $35
7'-8' at $40

You also have a choice of pick up dates, 12/05/09 from 8-12 and 12/12/09 from 8-12. For an extra $5, delivery is available in West Salem and for $7 in the rest of the Salem area.

We are hoping to make this an annual event. This year is a test run to see how it goes. All order forms must be turned in no later than 11/18/2009. Please put them in an envelope with the money for the trees and place it in the "Green Box" in the band room. Be sure to write on the envelope "Christmas Trees", this way it will make to the proper person. If you would like to volunteer to help on the 5th and/or the 12th or have any questions or comments you can contact Scotti Rylands at ndrsmom@comcast.net or call her at (503)269-0887.

Marie Callender's Pie Sale
Richard Spann and Marie Callender's have graciously found another way to make Band booster money this year. All you have to do is buy your Thanksgiving Pies from Marie Callender's at 2615 Lancaster Dr between 11/20/2009 and 11/26/2009. When you purchase your pie during those dates, give the cashier the certificate your kids will be bringing home and 50 cents for each pie will be given to Band Boosters. You don't have to do anything different than you would normally just submit the certificate and buy your pies there and we make money. The kids will be given a small stack each over the next couple weeks. Please share them with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, strangers, or anyone you wish. If you run out please e-mail John Rylands at johnrylands@comcast.net or call him at (503)779-6151 and he will get you some more.

Remember the more pies you buy, the more money we raise!

Scrip is Back!
We are ready to kick off the 2009- 2010 Scrip sales fundraiser. Buying Scrip is just like purchasing a gift card, but a portion of the money spent goes directly us. You buy Scrip (a gift card) and WSBB gets a percentage of what you spent back. There is no additional cost to you. If you pay $10, you get a $10 Scrip card, which you can then use as you would any gift card. Attached, please find both a Scrip (catalog page) and an order form for WSBB. Place your order in the Scrip drop box by Monday evening, and you’ll have your Scrip on Thursday afternoon. Local business feature…This year we are going to add local businesses to the Scrip program. This week, the Blue Pepper has been added and is offering us 7.5% of all gift card purchases. The Blue Pepper Scrip can be used for drinks, food wine, conference room rentals, and even art purchases. They have also offered us a $100 gift basket for the music family who sells the most Blue Pepper Scrip between now and 12/31. Thank you Blue Pepper!

Marching Band Schedule

Band Camp Thank You J

A big, Titan-sized thank you goes out to Michelle Pavelek for all of her hard work in coordinating this year’s marching band camp. Michelle, you ROCK!

Your Help is Needed!

Please read through the following list of items needed for Marching Band this season. If you can help with any of these items, please contact John Rylands, our Band Booster co-chair at johnrylands@comcast.net 503-779-6151.

A generator for our big trailer and our lights for competition days.

An RV that we can borrow to use at competitions. This would be used for staff to go over show prep and review during the competitions as well as to act as an infirmary for the walking wounded that usually happen during competitions. Who knew that marching band would be a contact sport, but every year someone gets hurt and we need a place for them to rest and get attention out of the elements.

A new medical bag. We are required to carry a first aid kit with us where ever we go. Right now we are using an old back pack that is crammed to the hilt and weighs a ton. We would like to get a nice, medium(something in the "carry on" size would be nice) red duffle bag with lots of pockets so we can better organize our first aid items. One with a nice shoulder strap would be great. We also would like it to be able to carry our travel and treat forms. Having the first aid kit and the travel and treat forms together makes it easy to get the kids help without any delay. Please contact John Rylands if you or someone you know can help.

Crew Members. We need to begin to put together our show day crew. These are the folks that help load, transport and move our equipment on competition day. Anyone interested should contact John ASAP if they are interested.

Titan Auction

The Titan Auction is coming up on November 21st. Tickets are $35.00 each or $280.00 per table of eight. Our goal this year is 5 tables. The more tables we get the larger our share of the proceeds is. Last year we took in about $1500.00. Our goal is to double that this year. We need to begin to get auction prizes in so we can claim our fair share. ANYTHING WILL WORK. Gift baskets, condo rentals, event tickets, any kind of memorabilia, trips, wine, or anything you can think of. No prize is too small. Be creative. The more we have the more we can raise. Student Sponsorships Needed

Due to the state of our economy, the need for student scholarships for marching band has risen this year. Several of our students have family members who have lost jobs and who are trying to manage other financial hardships. If you are able to sponsor or partially sponsor a student’s fair share, please contact Vickie Tuttle (contact info below). Donations for this purpose are tax deductible.

Student Accounts Trainee Needed

Calling freshman parents! The Student Accounts position is an important one in our booster organization. Vickie Tuttle has been serving in this position for quite some time now and is seeking a volunteer to “shadow,” or train, for this position. If you are a detail-oriented person and are interested in finding out what this position entails, please contact Vickie Tuttle (contact info below).

“Can” You Help with Music Day Cans?
Music Day brought in an overwhelming number of pop cans. The Gilmores have a 16’ trailer full of them in their driveway! In order to collect the deposit money for the music program, we need your help returning these pop cans. This job is too big for one family to take on. If you can pick up a bag or two to return, please contact Denise and Orval Gilmore at orval.gilmore@comcast.net.

Important Reminders from Todd Zimbelman for Marching Band Students

Band Camp Parent Handout, Attached

If you were unable to attend the parent meeting on Monday evening, or if you need an additional copy of the informational handout, please see the attached PDF file, where you can find info on schedules, necessary supplies, volunteer opportunities, the lock-in, and this evening’s social gatherings. Thank you to all of the parents hosting this evening’s gatherings!

Volunteers Needed for Uniform Fittings

Thanks to those who are already volunteering for uniform fittings! Additional volunteers would also be appreciated, even if you can only come for an hour or two or on only one evening. We need to get uniforms fitted and assigned to all marching band students before the exciting parent night on 8/31, when we get to see the show for the first time. Volunteers are gathering in the band room beginning at 6 pm each night. (No fittings tonight, 8/19, due to the social gatherings.)

Many hands make light work, and we still have many students to fit! If you are able to volunteer your time for this project, please contact Connie Phillips, our Uniform Coordinator at conniephillips1956@yahoo.com or (503) 391-6082.

Important Reminder #1:

Everyone in the marching band must have a 1" 3-ring binder by tomorrow morning (Wed.). This binder should have at least 40 plastic sheet protectors inside. This is needed for their music and drill sheets. Students should personalize the outside of their binder along with their name so it is easy to recognize. We start drill Wednesday morning, so it's very critical they have this by Tuesday night (tonight).

Important Reminder #2:

All winds and percussion need to wear white shirts for all marching band rehearsals (including band camp). All guard members need to wear black shirts. This is needed for drill cleaning and drill readability. Once the weather turns cold, other rehearsal clothes are permitted.

Marching Band Students: School Registration Wednesday, Aug. 19, 9:00 am

The WSHS administration has kindly adjusted the school registration times to accommodate the marching band schedule. Marching band students will register for school on Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, at 9:00 am. Photos will be taken during registration, so students should be prepared to have their pictures taken.

This time change is for marching band students only. Other music students should adhere to the schedule that was mailed home.

Our new uniform coordinator, Connie Phillips, will be fitting marching band AND concert attire this week, Aug. 17-21 from 6 to 9 pm. Marching band AND other music students will be fitted at this time. So, even if your student is not in marching band, please plan to stop in some time this week to be fitted for concert attire. Hello Marching Band Families,

My name is Michelle Pavelek and I am the Band Camp Coordinator this year. This year’s Marching Band is right around the corner and we are very excited about the upcoming season. Dr. Nail and the student leadership team have been working behind the scenes during the summer to prepare. Here is some important information regarding Band Camp 2009:

· Basic Band Camp Schedule – August 17-28, 2009

9:00am – 12:00pm Marching

1:00pm – 4:00pm Music or Stadium time

6:00pm – 9:00pm Full Ensemble

IMPORTANT DATES

***August 17^th, 8:00am – students must register outside the entrance to the music wing.

***August 17^th, 7:30pm – IMPORTANT PARENT MEETING in the auditorium.

***August 19^th, “Sectional Socials” – the schedule will be a little different in the evening. Detailed information will be provided at the parent meeting on August 17^th.

***August 21^st/22^nd, 9:00pm-6:00am – Lock-In – students will spend the night in the gym (including an ice cream social & lock-in breakfast)

***August 22^nd, 6:00am-9:30am – Lock-In breakfast

***August 28^th, around 9:00pm – Ice Cream Social

***August 31^st, 4:30pm-9:00pm – Parent Night potluck and performance

· Parent Volunteer Opportunties for Band Camp –

1. Lock-In – Sleepover in Gym, Friday August 21^st, 9:00pm until breakfast at 6:00am. We need about 8 parents to chaperone this event.

2. Lock-In – Saturday, August 22^nd, 6:00am – 9:30am. Breakfast preparation and clean up.

3. Ice Cream Social – help with serving ice cream. Friday August 28th at 9:00pm (tentative time).

4. Parent Night Potluck – Monday, August 31st, 4:30pm – 9:00pm. Dinner prep and clean up.

5. Snack donations for the band and colorguard. Cold snacks such as popsicles, otter pops are good. We have access to the foods room freezer during band camp.

*** An Insurance driving form and Background Check form (good for 5 years) are required for parents to volunteer for the band. Music Day Volunteers Needed – Sept. 12

Music Day is the Music Department’s largest fundraiser of the year. We need your help! Please mark your calendars: Saturday, September 12^th from 8:30 to 3:30. We need 38 drivers to cover the whole West Salem area. We need many other volunteers to help with the organization of the day, as well, such as help with planning and serving snacks and lunch at the school.

Please check your calendars and make plans to volunteer on Music Day (8:30 am to 3:30pm).

To volunteer, please send an email to Denise with your “YES, I WILL VOLUNTEER” along with your home and cell phone numbers and how many students you can take in your car if you want to be a driver. IMPORTANT DATES

***August 17^th, 8:00am – students must register outside the entrance to the music wing.

***August 17^th, 7:00pm – IMPORTANT PARENT MEETING in the auditorium.

***August 19^th, “Sectional Socials” – the schedule will be a little different in the evening. Detailed information will be provided at the parent meeting on August 17^th.

***August 21^st/22^nd, 9:00pm-6:00am – Lock-In – students will spend the night in the gym (including an ice cream social & lock-in breakfast)

***August 22^nd, 6:00am-9:30am – Lock-In breakfast

***August 28^th, around 9:00pm – Ice Cream Social

***August 31^st, 4:30pm-9:00pm – Parent Night potluck and performance

· Parent Volunteer Opportunties for Band Camp –

1. Lock-In – Sleepover in Gym, Friday August 21^st, 9:00pm until breakfast at 6:00am. We need about 8 parents to chaperone this event.

2. Lock-In – Saturday, August 22^nd, 6:00am – 9:30am. Breakfast preparation and clean up.

3. Ice Cream Social – help with serving ice cream. Friday August 28th at 9:00pm (tentative time).

4. Parent Night Potluck – Monday, August 31st, 4:30pm – 9:00pm. Dinner prep and clean up.

5. Snack donations for the band and colorguard. Cold snacks such as popsicles, otter pops are good. We have access to the foods room freezer during band camp.

Welcome to this season’s first Music Booster Newsleter!

New Band Director and Assistant Band Director Chosen

The West Salem High School Band Boosters is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Todd Zimbelman as our new Band Director. Mr. Zimbelman comes to us from Southridge High School in Beaverton where he has been Band Director for the last three years. Previously he was Band Director at Grants Pass High School and before that taught music at the University of Oregon. Not only did Mr. Zimbelman take Southridge to the number one position in the state in Marching Band, but he also took their Wind Ensemble to the number one position at the state finals this year. His ability to bring the most out in his students is one of the many reasons for his strong reputation as one of the premiere music educators in the state.

Dr. Nail, upon hearing this news, said that Mr. Zimbelman is an outstanding music educator and will continue to build upon our already strong reputation. He could not be more pleased with the choice as he holds Todd in very high regard. Ike welcomes Mr. Zimbelman and looks forward to working with him during the transition over the first half of the year.

Mr. Zimbelman will begin working with our Marching Band as soon as he can transition away from his duties at Southridge. Beginning with the start of the new school year, Mr. Zimbelman will be working as band director at Clagget Creek Middle School, filling in for their current band director who is going to be out on maternity leave. His official first day at West Salem High will be January 4, 2010. However, he will be working with our students during this transition period.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Luke Warren as our new Assistant Band Director. Mr. Warren comes to us by way of Portland State University where he just completed his Masters Degree program in Music Education. Luke received his Bachelors in Music Performance on the bass trombone from the University of Oregon in 2004. Luke was not only a student of Mr. Zimbleman at U of O, but he also worked with him at Southridge as an assistant working with their marching band. Mr. Warren will be joining us in time to start working with our students during marching band camp. He will also be performing similar duties to those of Mr. Griffiths during the school year.

Words of Appreciation . . .

We would like to thank all of those involved in the hiring of Mr. Zimbelman, in particular Principal Ed John and Karl Raschkes. Without their foresight and determination, this tremendous opportunity would not have been possible. We would also like to thank Larysa Pavelek, Danny Mitchell, Ashley Gresley, Garrett Maltzan, and Nick Rylands for their involvement in the student portion of the interviews. Their valuable assistance, mature insights and keen observations during the follow up discussions were highly regarded and went a long way in helping make this decision. We can be proud to have students of this caliber representing our program.

Lastly, we would like to give our heart felt thanks to both Ike Nail and Brian Griffiths. Their hard work and determination has taken the West Salem High School band program from its most humble of beginnings to its place now as one of the most respected music programs in the state. We want recognize their efforts and thank them for their guidance and leadership of our students over the last seven years. Their service to our school and students will never be forgotten.

Although these changes happened quickly, we now have a tremendous staff with Mr. Zimbelman and Mr. Warren on board. We look forward to working with them and making sure they have our full support. Please join us in welcoming them to West Salem High School. We know that this year is going to be filled with excitement and, most importantly, FUN!

Graduation Information – Attendance is Mandatory

West Salem High School Commencement

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Fairgrounds Pavilion

This is an officially scheduled event on your calendar. Attendance is required. The only exceptions are for students who have close family members graduating in another location at the same time. An official note from a parent will be required for an excused absence. This is an extremely important service we provide for our school and community. We need to perform it at a very high level.

Dress: Your tuxedos and dresses have already been turned in. Dress in your very nicest clothes. Men should at least wear dress shirt and tie; a sportcoat or suit is even better. Preferred dress for women is a skirt or dress; if you choose pants, please be as dressy as possible.

Equipment: We need percussionists to arrive at 5:20 to set up percussion. All students will help load equipment at the end of the evening.

Report: To the Pavilion at 5:30p.m., dressed for performance. Teachers, graduating seniors, and band students are to use the Sunnyview entrance. All others must use the main (17th St.) entrance. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation to the event. Please work out carpools ahead of time if necessary. Bring your own instrument and music. If you need assistance with a large instrument, speak to Mr. Nail or Mr. Griffiths ahead of time.

Schedule:

Band will play prior to ceremony.

7:00 Entrance of senior class (band playing).

After the seniors have entered, students needing to sit with their families may do so. Those students must return by the end of the ceremony to perform again.

After ceremony, band plays again.

"When it's over," you may travel home one of two ways:

City of Salem will NOT ALLOW parents to drive to the Pavilion to pick up students. Any students who drove themselves may (obviously) drive themselves home.
All students who were dropped off will be BUSED BACK TO SCHOOL. Our best guess is that we will arrive back at West at 9:30pm.

Jazz Night Tonight! May 29

Tonight’s the night for Jazz at WSHS! The Vocal Performance will be from 7:00 -7:40 in Auditorium (Admission free), and the Big Band event will take place from 7:45-9:45 in the Commons. Admission is $5 Adult, $3 Students and Seniors. Come one, come all!

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL PARENTS OF BAND, COLORGUARD AND MB STUDENTS!**

We have several positions in the WSHS Band Boosters that need to be filled immediately. Please consider your time and talents toward helping our Bands continue the excellence and traditions that WSHS has developed throughout its early years. Working together we can help keep this group moving forward for years to come.

There are many small jobs as well as coordinator positions that have been filled or have been advertised in the previous newsletters, however the following are imperative to continue planning into the summer.

Marching Band Deposits due June 1

All students planning to participate in the WSHS Marching Band and Color Guard need to submit their registration forms and $100 deposits no later than June 1. Registration forms are available in the band room.

Please note: Dr. Nail and Mr. G. have a policy that no student will be turned away due to an inability to pay. Please contact one of the directors directly if your student needs assistance with tuition. Requests will be handled privately.

Drumline—Mandatory One-Time-Only Meeting June 1

If you are interested in playing in the Drumline for summer/fall, please mark your calendar for the Mandatory Meeting on June 1. In past years, several meetings have been held, but this year, meeting space seems to be at a premium, so we will have ONE MEETING ONLY.

The date is Monday June 1 from 3:30-5:30pm at the West Salem Band Room. This time is mandatory for all those interested in playing in the battery in the fall (snares, quads, and bass drum). Pit players need not attend this session. Sooooo, if you are GOING to be a 9th grader through a senior, and you want a shot at the battery you must be there! This is the only session we are having, so please be ready to play. I am pretty sure you all know the types of exercises and techniques we use so dust off the sticks and come to play!

Orchestra Concerto Concert June 1

Monday June 1 is the orchestra concerto concert featuring wind ensemble members in the orchestra, Brendan Pavelek on Trumpet, and Anna Stipe on Bassoon. This concert will be an annual event - our most talented seniors will be invited by directors to play a movement of a concerto for an audience on the last orchestra concert students from band, choir, and orchestra will be featured. Audience is welcome to attend at 7pm. More information for students playing in the orchestra will be made available over the next 2 weeks. Thanks . . .

Drum Major and Guard Captain Auditions June 2

All band and color guard students are invited to attend the first portion of the audition: a live-band conducting audition, color guard skills demonstration, and student interviews of the candidates. This portion typically lasts from 2:45-4:15.

All band students were supposed to return their concert attire after the May 28 concert. If your band student has not returned his/her concert attire, please ensure that it is returned immediately. Thank you!

Two Thank Yous & An Upcoming Raffle Items Needed

· Thank you to all the parents who provided cookies and lemonade for the band awards Tuesday night. The students and parents appreciate your willingness to help make the night a special one.

· Thanks to all who helped with the bake sale and raffle during the Pre-State Concert! We are fundraising to purchase more garment bags, hangars and a plume bag. The band's portion of the proceeds garnered about 1/3rd of the amount needed!

We will be holding a raffle during the end of year concert on May 28th and are looking for donated items. If anyone wishes to donate, please contact me at conniephillips1956@yahoo.com or 503-391-6082.

Do not leave the group for any reason without Dr. Nail's or Mr. Griffiths' knowledge and permission. Conduct on the bus should be calm, quiet and seated. Band Booster Special Meeting, May 28, 6:15 pm in the WSHS Commons

The hour before the Spring Band Concert on May 28, the band boosters will be holding a special meeting to nominate and elect positions for the 2009-2010 school year. Members of the band boosters are defined as all parents, stepparents, or guardians of all students who participate in West Salem High School band, colorguard, and drumline activities. Note: Each parent/guardian in attendance at a meeting is entitled to one vote in matters where members are eligible to vote.

We invite you all to this special meeting as we look ahead to next year. Please don't be afraid to attend this meeting. It is possible to turn down a position if you are nominated. CCTV will again make a DVD of all the WSHS groups' performances at the state contests. Please see the attached order form for ordering details.

Volunteers Needed for Teacher Appreciation Luncheon May 27

Now is the time when we as parents show our appreciation to the teachers and staff who work with our kids in so many ways on a daily basis. Many of us are connected with the teachers already, however a group effort on the part20of the parents and families of West students means a lot to the teachers.

We are gearing up for our annual teacher appreciation luncheon. It will be held on Wednesday May 27 during both lunches in the Titan room. We have selected a menu and now we need to get people signed up to help bring food. In the past, some people have wanted to just donate some money towards the luncheon, that will probably be okay too. Missy Page will be coordinating our efforts. What I need from each of the booster presidents is a list of names of people who will sign up for different things. I think that there are individuals who are willing to help outside of our booster groups too, we will try to contact them as well. Foundation members feel free to sign up for stuff as well! We will also need servers the day of the luncheon, so let us know if you want to serve too.

We are need approximately 8 people from each group to donate food items.

These are:

1 pan chicken enchiladas to serve 10-12

1 pan beef enchiladas to serve 10-12

1 crockpot of taco seasoned ground beef

1 crockpot of spanish rice

1 crockpot black beans

1 large bag salad (costco size)

1 large cake or pan of brownies

1 chopped onion, 3 sliced tomatoes

If Athletics, ABC, Grad party and Music each donate the above items that will make a huge difference! Extra items that may also be donatated: 1 bag of lemons, 2 bags of ice, 1 lg bag shredded cheese, 3 jars of salsa, paper plates, utensils, cups and napkins for 120 staff members.

State Championships Itinerary, Corvallis - May 15, 2009

MANDATORY POTLUCK AND SYMPHONY REHEARSAL THURSDAY MAY 14

* 5:30pm in the Commons

* 6:30pm rehearsal until 8pm

o A – H = Salads (pasta, green, etc…)

o J – T = Main or side dish

o U – Z = Dessert

o Bring enough for 6-8 servings.

CORVALLIS INFO FOR FRIDAY MAY 15

Dress Advanced Symphony:

* Men – Full tuxedo (coat and pants), tux shirt, bow tie, black formal shoes, black socks, cummerbund.

* Women – Black concert dress, black hose or socks, closed-toe shoes. Hair pulled back out of face, no visible jewelry.

Bring:

* Instrument, music, anything else you need for your instrument – check with Dr. Nail for more info on this

* Change of clothes in a small bag (there is not much room for storage) if you wish

* Snacks and food or money (bring at least $10) if you will be eating dinner or snacks there

* Symphony Shirts if you purchased one

Advanced Symphony

All students report to the band room by 4:15 and to the bus by 4:20pm

Greetings from the 2008-2009 Band Booster Chair

Dear WSHS Band Families:

I want to thank you for all of your support, time, and energy this past school year in all aspects of the band program whether it be marching band, colorguard, drumline, concert bands, jazz band, symphony orchestra or the Pippen orchestra. It is a great feeling to be part of such a wonderful program with so many opportunities for our students. Not every school in the state of Oregon is able to offer students with the plethora of performing groups West has to offer and with such a high standard of excellence. I'm so thrilled and proud of all four of ou r top music groups who will be representing West at the state competition this month. It's a combination of great teaching, supportive parents, and dedicated students that culminate in our success.

As I leave the band chair position I would like to remind you that parents are a valuable asset to the program. We drive our kids to various lessons, rehearsals, concerts, we buy or rent them their instruments and supplies, we invest money and time and it's all for a great cause. Music in all it's various forms serves a great purpose throughout our lives. If I could leave you with one more thought and encouragement for the band program I would say to you that as parents and volunteers it is important to keep the lines of communication open and to not loose sight of why the music boosters exist:

* To promote and maintain an enthusiastic interest in the various phases of music activity at West Salem High School.

* To lend all possible support, both moral and financial, to the Music programs of West Salem High School.

* To cooperate with those in charge of the West Salem High School to the end that the Music Department be brought to and be kept at the highest possible degree of efficiency.

* To build and maintain an organization which will help promote the general act ivities of the Music Department.

* To seek to have parents, teachers, administrators, and the public cooperate in furthering the endeavors of students in music related extra-curricular activities at West Salem High School.

Thank you again for supporting the band program and I personally want to thank you for supporting me. I wish the best for the program in the fall and coming year.

The Music Boosters meet each month on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Band Room. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at 6:30. We hope to see you there!

SCRIP Orders Still Being Taken – Build Your Student’s Personal Account

SCRIP orders need to be placed by Tuesday mornings at 9 am each week to receive your SCRIP cards the following week. Stock up now on Safeway Cards, Walgreens Cards, Movie Tickets, and more. If you’re spending money at these places anyway, you might as well have some of those funds coming back to the band and to your student’s personal accounts.

Reminder: Concert Attire Must Be Returned Soon

All seniors must turn in their concert attire following the final concert in May, and the remaining students need to return their concert attire following graduation. This gives us about a two week period for all attire to be returned and accounted for.

Reminder: School policy states that any students who do not return their attire will have their grades withheld or be charged a fee of $200 for a tux or $150 for a dress.

On April 6, the Salem-Keizer Friends of Music joined with the Salem-Keizer Coalition for Equality and Stand for Children to hold a Salem-Keizer School Board candidate forum. All of the candidates for Zones 1, 3, 5 and 7 were invited. Chris Brantley, Nancy MacMorris-Adix, Patrick Sieng and Rick Kimball participated. Salem-Keizer School Board members hold important positions in our community. They represent the public--the owners of the schools--set policies, evaluate the level of success of the schools and set future directions. This is an important election.

Based on this forum and our knowledge of the work of the candidates, the Friends of Music unanimously voted the following statements of support:

Zone 1: Chris Brantley

We are impressed with his understanding of school important school issues, his experience in education, his long-standing support of music education, his initiative to meet with principals to see what is working and what needs improvement, and his willingness to meet with the public in this candidate forum.

We are impressed with her 15 years of work in Zone 3 as a parent and community member to make schools better for students, her direct work in support of music and a complete education, her practical understanding of the wide range of issues facing the schools today and her calm, intelligent judgment.

Pre-State Concert

The Choir, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra are all qualified and accepted to play at state. These groups will all be performing at Thursday’s Pre-State Concert, which begins at 7:00 pm. Students will receive their call times in class.

URGENT! We need **Raffle Items,** Garden Supplies, Store-Bought Baked Goods, and Volunteers for April 30 Concert Fundraiser

**Raffle items are especially needed at this time—we have only three so far. No time to shop? Bring your cash donations and place them in the box in the band room by Thursday morning, and Kami will shop for you!**

This year during Band Camp, students will be fitted for marching attire and concert attire. In order to do this, the band boosters need to purchase more garment bags and hangers. The plume bag also needs to replaced. In order to fund these purchases, we will be holding a bake sale and a raffle at the Pre-State Concert on April 30th. Our goal is to raise $300. The Choir and Orchestra will be participating in this fundraising event as well.

We need donations of store-bought bake sale items (cookies, brownies, etc. -- single serve items) and raffle items (such as gift cards, etc.). We already have a beautiful quilt donated by a Wind Ensemble parent! As regards the bake sale goods, District policy does not allow for home-baked goods to be sold for public events; therefore, donations need to be store bought.

Gardening Baskets

Each participating music group also will be putting together a basket of gardening items. The band students' basket will be along the lines of a gardening theme. Students are being asked to provide items for the basket; such as small gardening tools, gloves, seed packets, fertilizer spikes, or anything that goes with gardening.

Donations can be brought the night of the concert of dropped off in the band room prior to the concert. We are asking that the items be labeled "Band," “Orchestra,” or “Choir,” as the proceeds will be split between music sections according to donation volume.

We will also need a few parent and student volunteers to help staff the tables.

S-K bands will play for state titles

Most groups had to wait until Monday to get the final word

Salem-Keizer schools will be hard to miss at the state music competitions in mid-May.
District string ensembles and symphony orchestras will account for nine of the 21 groups chosen to play at the Orchestra State Championships on May 15 at Oregon State University.

As with choirs and bands, most groups that qualified for state during district competitions had to wait until Monday for final word from the Oregon School Activities Association. Independent judges had to further narrow the finalists in some categories by listening to tapes.

These Salem-Keizer string orchestras will compete at Oregon State University on May 15: McKay, 8 a.m.; McNary, 8:50 a.m.; West Salem, 10:20 a.m.; Sprague, 1:45 p.m.; South Salem, 2:35 p.m.

These full symphony orchestras will compete that afternoon and evening: North Salem, 3:50 p.m.; Sprague, 4:25 p.m.; South Salem, 6:20 p.m.; and West Salem, 7:30 p.m.

These bands will compete in the Class 6A State Band Championships at OSU on May 16: McKay, 9 a.m.; McNary, 10:45 a.m.; Sprague, 2 p.m.; West Salem, 4:15 p.m; and South Salem, 6:45 p.m.

These Salem-Keizer high schools will compete in the Class 6A Choir State Championships on May 9 at George Fox University in Newberg: West Salem, 2:40 p.m.; North Salem, 3:40 p.m.; South Salem, 5 p.m.; McNary, 5:40 p.m.; and Sprague, 6 p.m.

Area honored for its music education

S-K is only Oregon district on industry group's list of 124

Salem-Keizer is one of 124 "best communities" for music education in the country, the NAMM Foundation said recently.

The music-industry group chose winners from more than 500 school districts that completed detailed questionnaires on such topics as funding, graduation requirements, music-class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for music programs. The survey was developed and administered by The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service, an affiliate of the University of Kansas.

Salem-Keizer was the only Oregon school district on the list.

"We're really pleased to have received that award but not surprised," said Brian Griffiths, the associate director of bands at West Salem High School. "This community really does support its music programs. That's one of the reasons it's a great place to teach."

A lot of the credit, he said, should go to Karl Raschkes, the district supervisor of music education, who looks nationwide to hire the best music teachers he can.

Marianne Stipe, a parent who has been active in Friends of Music for about five years, said Salem-Keizer already has a national reputation for excellence.

"Our daughter is going into music education at Eastern Illinois University," she said. "She was given a substantial scholarship based on her academics and music. When she auditioned there and gave them a playlist of things she had played in high school, they were blown away by the level at which our bands perform."

Gifted children aren't the only reason that the district should continue to invest in its music program, she said.

"Music reaches out to all kids: the high academic achievers and the not-so-high who keep coming to school because (band or choir) is the place where they belong."

The NAMM Foundation is the philanthropic arm of an international association representing businesses that make and distribute music products of all kinds, said Mary Luehrsen, the foundation's executive director. It works on projects to encourage music making by people of all ages.

Volunteers Needed Fri. 4/17 & Sat. 4/18 – Central Valley League Band Festival at West
Parents and responsible students: We need your help! Jobs can be divided into 2-4 hour shifts. If you are willing to help on Saturday please email Kami Hettwer mkhett@aol.com. Here’s what we need help with:

Door monitors (these performances are recorded... there can be NO disruptions from the audience)
Runners for the CD recording guy
One assistant for each judge to help with running scores and fulfilling any
Other needs like water, food, etc...

Monitors for the Commons where the bands/orchestras will be dumping their stuff
2 or 3 people (at least 2 adults) for the check-in/Welcome table.

Friends of Music Volunteer **Still Needed**
WSHS Music Boosters are currently seeking a volunteer to be our liaison with the Friends of Music organization. WSHS is currently the only SK high school not represented at Friends of Music. The Friends of Music is an organization that advocates for music programs in the SK Schools. The group meets one evening every other month. Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band Honored at Seattle Heritage Festival

The Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band took top honors at the Seattle Heritage Festival on April 4. Both groups won first place in their categories and received a “Gold” rating. The competition included choir and band groups from across the country. Leading music educators judged the groups and provided an on-stage clinic for our students.

The bands performed at the Auburn Performing Arts Center and then enjoyed a harbor cruise to Tillicum Island for a Native American Show and an awards ceremony. Other awards earned included:

Sweepstakes Award - awarded to the school with the 2 highest scoring band or choir groups in the festival

Outstanding Band Group Award

Adjudicators Award - awarded to the school with an average score of 92 or above out of 100.

Maestro Awards - awarded to outstanding individual musicians

Matt Hettwer - trombone

Katie Baker - bass

The Wind Ensemble received a special invitation to perform in a Heritage Festival Gold. These festivals include bands from around the country who have also received a “gold” rating.

On Sunday, the students enjoyed a fun day at the Experience Music Project Museum, the Pacific Science Center and Pike Street Market. The weather was fabulous - not a drop of rain! On Monday, the Wind Ensemble participated in a clinic with Dr. Tim Salzman, the Director of Bands at the University of Washington. He provided valuable musical instruction to help prepare the band for the upcoming district and state competitions.

Build Your Student’s Personal Account with SCRIP!
SCRIP orders are a great way to build your student’s personal account. Place orders for SCRIP gift cards for the locations where you normally spend cash, such as the Regal movie theater, McMenamin’s, Safeway, and Walgreen’s. You get to spend every dollar you pay for, and a percentage of your purchase goes into the band general fund and into your student’s personal account. An order form is attached.

High school teacher Ike Nail earns educator award from symphony group

West Salem High School band director Ike Nail was named Music Educator of the Year by the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem.

The association announced its selection Tuesday.

Nail was chosen after an OSAS adjudication committee visited his classroom and was immediately impressed by his approach to teaching his wind ensemble students, association members said in an announcement.

"As students quietly came into class, it was apparent they were eager to be there," the announcement said. "Dr. Nail's enthusiasm and sense of humor were embraced by his students. He worked with students not only on getting the notes, but the musical expression and feeling that is such an important component of the performance."

West Salem's music programs will receive a $1,000 check as part of the recognition.
Nominees for the award included Carol Stenson, South Salem choir; Sara Linsell, Leslie Middle School band; Steve Phillips, Auburn Elementary School general music and choir; and Andy Thomas, Whiteaker Middle School choir.

Nail began teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District at Sprague High School, where he was the co-recipient of two Grammy Awards. He began at West Salem in the school's inaugural year.

Seattle Trip Mandatory Parent Meeting
Attention Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band Parents

Tues. Feb. 24th at 6:30pm – Please join us in the band room for a mandatory parent meeting regarding the upcoming Seattle Trip scheduled for April 3-6. Students are also welcome!

· Trip itinerary and other important information will be provided.
· Chaperone information will be provided.
· The 2nd trip deposit of $100.00 is due Feb. 20th. Make the checks out to “WSHS Music Boosters,” indicate on the check that it is for the Seattle trip and have your student place the check in the green mailbox in the band room.
· The final trip cost is $350.00. This includes meals, activities, the festival, transportation, and the clinic at University of Washington on Monday April 6th with Tim Salzman.

We are barely getting enough SCRIP orders in to make the fundraiser worthwhile. Did you know that 40% of the proceeds from SCRIP go to the student musician’s personal account? And, as always, SCRIP shopping cards are available for the places where you already shop and dine. This is an easy and pain-free way to build up those student accounts!

For each person who orders SCRIP, 40% of the profit from their order will go directly into their student's account. The other 60% will go into the general band fund unless there is a special fundraising project to which we will direct the funds, such as the Spring Trip. Here's how it works:

REPORT: To the Band Room at 6:45 am dressed for performance. Roll check – depart for OSU at 7:15 am

EQUIPMENT: The festival will furnish: timpani, chimes, xylophone, marimba, bass drum, chairs and stands.

We must take everything else we will need:
1. Your instrument (including snare drums, cymbals and traps)
2. Your music
3. Mutes, valve oil, reeds, sticks, cork grease
4. All of your uniform

SCHEDULE: 6:45 Report to band room, dressed for performance – Roll check
7:15 Depart for OSU
8:15 Arrive at OSU – Quickly move to rehearsal room or stage

FOOD: One of our primary purposes in attending this festival is to familiarize ourselves with the Lesells Stewart Performance Hall. Listen and learn as much as possible. There are no places to get food near the performance site nor will we have time to eat. Eat a good breakfast before we leave. Take some sort of meal/snack with you to tide you over for the ride back to school. Dry sandwiches, fruit, energy bars or trail mix would be appropriate, but nothing messy. Do not plan to leave the group.

On this and every other occasion when we will be representing West Salem and the WSHS Band Program as a group, the highest standards of behavior are expected. All school and West Salem Band rules for acceptable behavior apply on this and every field trip. Contact Dr. Nail or Mr. Griffiths immediately regarding anything out of the ordinary. Do not leave the group for any reason without Dr. Nail or Mr. Griffith’s knowledge and permission. Conduct on the bus should be calm, quiet and seated. If you will not return home on the bus, you must have a note granting parental approval before we leave. Be safe, be courteous and behave.

Pep Band Basketball Games this Week!
The WSHS Pep Band will play at two basketball games this week, Tuesday, Feb. 3, and Thursday Feb. 5. Call time for all game nights is 5:20 pm. Games begin at 7:00 pm, and they end "when the game is over.”

All-City Honor Band
On Thursday, January 29, Salem-Keizer Public schools held their annual All-City honor band tryouts at North Salem High School. Students spend many hours preparing demanding musical etudes, polishing their major and chromatic scales, and preparing themselves for sight-reading material. Students are then selected based solely on their live audition to participate in what is truly an outstanding honor band. Honor band members spend many hours rehearsing together outside of school hours, culminating in a fantastic concert directed by a distinguished guest conductor. This year’s All-City concert will be held on Saturday, February 28, at 6:00pm at North Salem High School and will feature all three honor groups: choir, orchestra and band.

The Jazz Band will be performing at Lane Community College on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Salem Youth Symphony Concerto Competition
Students Matt Hettwer, Josh Hettwer, Jesse Wertz, and Taylor Baldwin will be performing at the Salem Youth Symphony Concerto Competition on Sat. Jan. 24, starting at 5:00 pm. The location is the Salem First United Methodist Church, located on the corner of Church and State Streets. Admission is free. Come support our musicians!

All-City Auditions
All-City auditions will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Booster Meeting

2009 Basketball Band Season
After much scheduling, snowing, and rescheduling, we finally have a handle on the Basketball Band season for 2009. This exciting ensemble rehearses twice only, and will perform at five or six games this season.

The group plays a mix of rock, funk, and swing tunes, and is a highly visible performing group at West Salem. Details are being announced in band classes, and a sign-up sheet is on the wall just inside the band room door. The schedule is as follows.

SCRIP
SCRIP is a new fundraiser that will benefit the Band Booster General Fund*. Here’s how it works: Families purchase gift cards for the stores where they plan to shop. The SCRIP cardholder gets the full amount paid for, and the Band Booster General Fund gets a percentage of the proceeds. For example, Fred Meyer SCRIP cards get a 4% discount, which means that if someone buys a $100 gift card, the Band Booster General Fund gets $4.

*Please note: Between the dates January 20-March 24, the SCRIP fundraiser will benefit the Wind Ensemble/Jazz Band Spring Trip fund. Our goal is to raise enough money to cover the cost of transportation and director fees ($680 total). After March 24, the SCRIP fundraiser will benefit the General Fund.

First SCRIP Deadline: Tuesday, Jan. 20, 10 am.

SEATTLE TRIP DEPOSIT IS DUE
Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band Students & Parents, the deposit for the Seattle Trip (April 3-6, 2009) is due. We are pleased to announce that we have been able to negotiate lower costs in transportation and hotel accommodations outside of the normal Heritage Festival package to reduce the cost of the Seattle trip. In addition, we have contacted several attractions located in the Seattle area and have received significant savings due to our large group size….some businesses have offered as much as 50% off the normal fees. We want to make this trip as affordable as possible for each family. We are working diligently to reduce costs even further and will report any additional cost savings we are able to achieve.

Dr. Nail is also trying to set up a clinic on Monday, April 6 at the University of Washington. However, if this does not happen, then we will return home on Sunday evening rather than Monday afternoon and adjust the cost accordingly.

At this time, we will require a deposit of $150.00 from each student who is planning to join us on this trip to Seattle. The deposit money is due by Friday January 16. Please make checks payable to WSHS Music Boosters and have your student put the check in the green box in the band room.

Payment Plan Schedule:

First Deposit: $150 Due January 16
*Second Deposit: approximately $100.00 Due Feb 20
*Final Deposit: approximately $100.00 Due March 20

*The Second and Final Deposits will be the remaining cost of the trip divided evenly (Final payment could be less depending on what we bring in on SCRIP! See SCRIP information provided in this newsletter).

Note: Once the costs are finalized, we will send the details out to all participants.

Walker Middle School Winter Ensemble
The 2nd year Walker Middle School Winter Ensemble is alive and kickin’! Percussion and Guard are off to a great start for what’s only our second year in existence. We have chosen to do music from the movie Wall - E. The students seemed to enjoy the music that Alan has already arranged for the percussion. We played it for them at the second rehearsal. The percussion students are already learning the actual show music, as well as learning basic exercises. The guard is doing great learning all of their exercises, and they’re on their way to learning show choreography.

This is going to be a GREAT Season for our Walker MS Winter Students. Our BIG performance this year is going to be at the Walker MS Talent Night on April 9. We are currently looking for a few more local community performances. If you are someone involved or know someone involved with the city planners or any other group who may be looking for live entertainment at a function in the months of March or April please contact me directly jfreemanj@hotmail.com.

Concert Attire Information
Everyone looked great at the first concert. As with all firsts, though, there are always some improvements to be made! It's important that everyone looks professional and uniform. Boys must wear a clean white pressed (ironed) tux shirt along with a black bow tie and cummerbund, as well as clean black shoes and socks. If anyone has a problem getting a tux shirt please email Deanna Garney at dg5758@comcast.net. We can work something out.

Also, through the year some of you will grow and your pants will become shorter. Please have them hemmed, or ask Mrs. Garney or Mrs. Phillips to fix them for you. Girls, please make sure your dresses are hemmed to the top of your shoes. Dresses should not drag on the ground. And again if you find that you need a different size please let us know. Band Booster Meeting Tuesday, Jan. 13, WSHS Band Room 6:30 pm

Tuesday's meeting we will be discussing the Wind Ensemble/Jazz Band spring trip. If you have any concerns, comments, questions or suggestions concerning the spring trip, this is a meeting we encourage you to attend. We are in the final stages of working out the details such as a list of students who can attend, payment schedule, Sunday activities, and possibly cutting the trip a day early to cut costs.

I encourage you to attend the meeting as we work out the final details, but if you can not make the meeting please fill free to email Kami Hettwer mkhett@aol.com with your questions, concerns or suggestions and she will make sure to addresses them at the meeting and follow up with a reply email.

Happy New Year!

Concert Rescheduled
The WSHS band concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, Jan. 8, Performing groups include Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Concert Band will NOT be performing. Students are to report to the band room dressed for performance at 6:45. Concert starts at 7:30.

Music Booster Meeting Rescheduled
The Music Booster meeting has been postponed until January 13. Meet in the WSHS band room at 6:30.

Seattle Trip for Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band
Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band students wishing to attend the trip to Seattle need to fill out the attached form and return it ASAP. Please see the attachment for details.

Hi all,

A message from Brian Griffiths about the weather and this week’s concerts:

1) No Band concert tonight. We may seek an alternate January concert date. If so, we will try to announce it prior to winter vacation.

2) If school is in session tomorrow, and if the orchestra concert goes ahead as planned, the Symphony Orchestra will be invited to play on the concert. We will discuss the availability of wind personnel Tuesday morning in Wind Ensemble.

WSHS band students will be marching in Salem’s Festival of Lights Parade. Please see the attached flyer for details. Students should bring Santa hats. If you have extra to share, please bring them! We have only 46 in stock, but we need 114.

Saturday, Dec. 13, 8:30 am, there will be a meeting about the “Christmas Drums” percussion fundraiser at WSHS.

Concert Etiquette

A few reminders about concert etiquette to help make the performances more enjoyable for all:

· Please arrive on time and plan to stay for the entire concert.
· If you must enter or leave the auditorium during a concert, please do so between songs.
· Please silence all cell phones.
· Please do not interrupt performances with flash photography.
· Please enjoy the performances these young musicians have worked so hard to prepare!

Free Babysitting Available
At our Winter Band Concert, Monday, December 15, babysitting is available in the Commons thanks to West teacher Tara Vaughn and her Titan Tots high school students. BABYSITTING IS FREE and available to those under the age of six. It is available from 6:45 through the concert’s end. Children can stay in babysitting for the whole concert, or can go to the babysitting area if they are too wriggly to stay in the auditorium. Please email Kami Hettwer at mkhett@aol.com if you wish to reserve a spot for your child/children.

New Fundraiser – SCRIP Program
To help raise money for the band program we will be starting up a new “SCRIP” program. It's an easy what to raise money for special needs, such as fees for festivals, sectional coaches, and trips. Scrip is a dollar for dollar exchange—cash or check for the very same value of gift cards of your choice at over 250 participating stores. We will need people willing to pick up our scrip orders once a week at the warehouse located in Tigard just off of I-5. If you work in the Tigard/Portland area this is a great opportunity for you to volunteer. Contact Kami Hettwer if you are willing to help!

Christmas Tree Sales
Come and join the West Salem Winter Percussion & Guard at the West Salem Lions Tree Lot at the West Salem True Value store on Wallace Road. We still have many trees left, and all of the proceeds get split between WS Lions, a WS Cub Scout Troup, a WS Boy Scout Troup, the WSHS Grad Party, and the WS Winter Ensembles. Please tell your friends and family to buy from the WS True Value Lot. It is open 10-7 Daily. If you show up and there is no one there, please come back; we are trying to staff all shifts but it can be hard!

Wind Ensemble Spring Trip
More information will be coming soon about the Wind Ensemble Spring Trip. The dates are April 3-6 to Seattle for the Heritage Festival. Stay tuned!

Competition Wrap-Up at U of O’s Festival of Bands Reaps Prelim Sweep, 2A Championship

Although this late edition brings old news, it can’t go without saying how stellar the WSHS Marching Band performed in this, their final competitive performance of the year. In the same fashion of the three previous competitions, the band placed first in high score in the preliminary show. Going out in final performance style, the band took EVERY SINGLE “Caption Award” for their performances. Placing 4th overall in finals competition with the highest score in the school’s history, the final performance garnered a score of 90+ points, separating them just a few points from the “Open” class powerhouse bands. During the finals award ceremony, the band was presented their 2A Championship trophy and ALSO won the “Best Solo” award for all of the soloists playing in the show.

2A Champs!!! After a preliminary sweep of all caption awards and high score, WSHS Marching Band was presented with the Championship Trophy for winning the overall points in the 2A Competition group. Great job kids! The inscription reads “NAFPA 2008 AA Class Champions”

Winter Drumline Information Meeting, Monday, Nov. 10

There will be a short meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons to gather and give out information on this year’s Winter Drumline. Discussed at this past Tuesday’s band meeting, the color guard and drum line will compete in separate classes and be separate from each other. The color guard will have a separate meeting and notification. If you have any interest for this year’s Winter Drum Line, this is the meeting you must attend to gather the necessary information, costs, preliminary schedule, and more.

Therefore, the “Band Meeting” for the month of November has been rescheduled to this Thursday, November 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the band room. Basically same time and place, just a different day for this month only. Sorry for the late notice or any inconvenience this may have caused.

Marching Band Takes Home More Awards at OSU Competition

In another stunning performance, the WSHS Marching Band took home preliminary honors, placing first in the Preliminary competition. The percussion (drum line and "pit") took the "High Percussion" caption award in BOTH the preliminary and finals competition, impressively topping even the more sophisticated "Open" class larger bands. If you can join us for the final competition of the year, please do come down to the University of Oregon to cheer on the WSHS Marching Band!! See next article for more information on the event.

University of Oregon's "Festival of Bands" Competition and Rehearsal Information Saturday (November 1st)

The weather doesn't look like it will be as cooperative as the several competitions before, but all competitors will have the same disadvantage with the expected rain (see NOAA forecast info in next article). The band has been practicing hard on this week's "days off" and will have one final run at the football game this Friday night (also slated as "Seniors Night"). The students already have their call times for the Friday rehearsal and game time call times; the call time for the Saturday competition will not be until 0900. It was originally stated as 0930, but the exact call time is subject to change to 0900. We had a lucky draw and the band's first performance in prelimaries isn't until 4:44 p.m.. URGENT MESSAGE

It has come to our attention that the "director ladder" used by the drum majors is in dire need of repair, preferably replacement. With this close to the competition I am sending out this to all parents in hopes that someone MIGHT have one of these "platform ladders" either at home, or possibly be able to borrow one at work. Chances are these are at commercial sites and not your normal home ladder.

If someone DOES have a link to obtaining one, we need it by TONIGHT J
-- kind of an emergency of course. Attempts to obtain a new one appears that it takes two weeks to order. So if we could borrow an existing one for several days, this would be IDEAL. Please contact Marty Stipe directly at marty.stipe@state.or.us . If he doesn't reply soon enough or it might be after normal work hours, please call him directly at (503) 508-6062.

It needs to be approximately six feet at the "platform". You've all seen it at the performances, we just wanted to make sure all know of what we're speaking about. The failure of this piece of equipment with one of the drum majors on it would be devastating as you might imagine.

A Growing Trend? WSHS Band Takes 1st Place at PCI !

More hard work, and yet another pay off for the musicians of the WSHS Marching Band as they took home the big trophy for their overall preliminary and finals performances. Sweeping nearly every “caption award” in the preliminary of finals competition, each and every marching band and color guard member contributed in this overall team effort in “High Visuals,” “High General Effect” and “High Percussion.”

Practice and Competition Schedule for week of October 20th

The normal rehearsal schedule for Mondays and Wednesdays remains at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is still a pending rehearsal to be held on Friday and the equipment will be loaded after that rehearsal in preparation for the early call time for the competition on Saturday, October 25th at OSU. A draft of the schedule is attached and currently shows a call time at the school for 6 a.m. on Saturday (yes, that is MORNING, or 0600). Remember the date: November 22, 2008—The end of October is sneaking up on us. To be considered for the live auction all donations must be turned in by November 1st and “Silent Auction” by November 7th. We have received some great donations for Music Boosters including a Guided Fishing Trip (waiting for more details), 5 nights at a Sunriver Condo (sleeps 8), gift baskets, and more. We still need a lot more though. If you have a donation or can get one for us, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms that also act as a tax deductible receipt.

And with all those great prizes who would want to miss the fun? There are still tickets available. Music Boosters are trying hard to fill our second table. Please contact Scotti with the names of each person you need a ticket for. She will give you the information at that time for payment on the tickets. Remember it is $30 per person and does include dinner.

If you have already bought a ticket and want to part of our tables, please let us know. The more tickets we sell the higher our portion of the donations will be. For each full table we get 100% of the money raised for 1 item of our choice, from our donations. You can see why we want to fill as many tables as possible. Wreath and Poinsettia Sales Annual Fundraiser

It's that time of year…wreath and poinsettia sales—a favorite of many! Packets containing all the information and forms were available for your student to take home this past week (week of Oct. 1st). All profits from this sale go directly into student accounts for use to pay for trips or fair share. Turn forms and money in anytime, but they are due by October 31^st. Please mark your calendar with this date! There is a slight typographical error on the form in our favor—the turn-in sheet states the “Mixed Fruit Wreath” is $35, but it is actually $30 like the order form states. Auction Update

Just a reminder about the Titan Dinner & Auction, the event is on Nov. 22^nd at 5pm it is called a “Evening of Elegance” at the Salem Convention Center. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is an adult night out (who of us does not enjoy that) and semi-formal attire is suggested, so break out those fancy duds and come have a “elegant” (really fun) evening. For those of you interested there will be a “no host” bar. We have heard it is a very fun night.

If you have already bought tickets and would like to be part of the Band Booster table(s) PLEASE let Scotti know how many tickets you bought and the names of the people that will be attending. We can then have you placed at a Band Booster table. This way Band Boosters gets credit for full tables. J

We hear there are some great items that are going to be part of the auction. We are still in need of donations; if you would like to make a donation, or are available to help out with rounding some up, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms. Please remember donations are tax deductible.

We also need a few student and parent volunteers to help set up the auction tables on the morning of the event at about 8 a.m. until we are done. Our evening schedule, including dinner time, changing, warm-up, performance, and loading, will depend on our placement in Prelims and a random draw.

Finals run between 3:45 and 7:15, with a FULL BAND RETREAT at 7:05 p.m.

8:30 Arrive back at West and unload.

As with all trips and events, our arrival time is a “best guess” based on available information. All students will help unload and store all equipment. After all gear is stowed, the entire ensemble will meet in the band room to dismiss.

On this and every other occasion when we will be representing West Salem and the WSHS Band Program as a group, the highest standards of behavior are expected. All school rules for acceptable behavior apply on this and every field trip. Contact a director immediately regarding anything out of the ordinary, especially threatening or abusive behavior. Do not leave the group for any reason without Mr. Nail's/Mr. Griffiths’ knowledge and permission. If you will not return home on the bus, you must have a note granting parental approval before we leave West.

The Four Deadly Sins of Band Travel
(1.) Use of any controlled substance,

(2.) Refusing directions from chaperones or staff,

(3.) Any sexual impropriety,

(4.) Deliberate destruction of property.

WSHS Band Takes 1^st Place in Sunset Classic Preliminary Contest

The hard work already started to show, AND pay off when the WSHS Marching band took 1^st place honors in 2A division in the preliminary competition at last Saturday’s Sunset Classic competition. This placement qualified them to compete in the evening’s final competition where all qualifiers were placed in the “Open” class where it is very difficult to compete against the size of those “Open Class” bands. But our musicians made us proud placing 4^th overall against the strongest marching bands in the Northwest. We’ve only just begun!!! Great job WSHS Band! We’re all very proud of you. For a more detailed look at the scores and the placement of all the schools, please see the attached “08_SUNSET_FINALS” document.

There were a couple of events this past week, so we have a couple of “Pictures of the Week”—one from the Tom McCall ceremony at Riverfront Park last Friday and one from the competition in Hillsboro on Saturday.

2. Friday Competition Prepà Rehearsal Update & Itinerary-- In earlier communications to the students and in a special “WSHS Bulletin” sent earlier via email, the change in the schedule was already announced due to a field scheduling conflict. Below is the more detailed schedule, which can also be found on the attached “Sunset Classic 2008 Itinerary” document.

4:00 Battery warm-up & rehearsal.

5:00 Winds, Pit, & Guard rehearsal in stadium (rehearsal begins at 5:00—do not be late!)

All instruments, flags, and props!

7:00 Rehearsal ends. Load up begins.

All students will be dismissed by their section leaders after all section load duties are complete.

It is likely that pit percussion will be the longest load, and that the pit will have a later call time

in the morning.

Parents—We can always use a few more hands to get the equipment loaded onto the trucks and trailers, so why not drop by after Friday’s rehearsal to see if there is a need for an additional hand. More hands make for small work J If all goes as in the past, we are normally out of there no later than an hour after the load starts.

This was the same information that will be (was) handed out at the Wednesday evening rehearsal, but we wanted to make sure all had ample time to review it in case it didn’t make it’s way to the kitchen table from the practice field J. Hopefully ONE of the attached should be viewable by all. One bottom take away from the document is the “call time” for Saturday—0800 or 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Cookie Monster Needs Help: Special Requests for Competition Preparation, Tasks, and other Help

We are in need of 9 dozen cookies for Saturday's competition day. Please email Nicole Bess at Nicol.Bess@qwest.com so she knows how many people have committed to making cookie. Cookies can be placed in a big Ziploc bag and brought to the school on the evening of Friday's rehearsal or on Saturday to the cooking trailer at our tent site.

Additional Request-- We are in need of “string lighting” and extension cords for the tents at our competitions. If anyone can loan work lights and extension cords please label them with your name and bring them on Friday night at the end of rehearsal or Saturday at the competition. One More Request—Connie Phillips is the bus chaperone coordinator and since we have a competition coming up, we need volunteers to ride the buses up and back with the students. We need 2 to 3 parents for each competition and that anyone interested can call Connie at 503-391-6082. This Saturday is our first need for chaperones!

One More Time... Don’t forget: All Band Members Must Have Black Socks!

Please remember to bring black socks when dressing in uniform. No ankle-length or “quarter socks”. They must cover your ankles completely. Pick up a bag of inexpensive black cotton socks from Target, Fred Meyers, Wal-Mart.... You will need to have 2-3 on hand at competitions. There is nothing worse then spending a entire day marching in wet socks. We also need to have some in stock at school to help out those who do forget theirs, so if some of you could donate a bag that would be great. If their are any questions or concerns regarding uniforms please contact me at anytimeà Deanna Garney at dg5758@comcast.net

Titan Auction—Update

Just a reminder about the Titan Dinner & Auction, the event is on Nov. 22^nd at 5pm it is called a “Evening of Elegance”. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is an adult night out (who of us does not enjoy that) and semi-formal attire is suggested, so break out those fancy duds and come have a “elegant” (really fun) evening. For those of you interested there will be a “no host” bar.

Last year Band Boosters had two tables; let’s see if we can get three or four together this year. For every table we fill we get 100% of the proceeds for one of our donated auction items, of our choice. The are 8 seats to a table, if you have a group of friends you would like to sit with now is the time to get them all together while there are still full tables left. Tickets are $30 per person, if you wish to purchase a whole table the cost is $240. Seats are going quickly so don’t wait. If you have already bought tickets and would like to be part of the Band Booster table please let Scotti know how many tickets you bought and the names of the people that will be attending. We can then have you placed at a Band Booster table.

We hear there are some great items that are going to be part of the auction. We are still in need of donations; if you would like to make a donation, or are available to help out with rounding some up, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms. Please remember donations are tax deductible. We also need a few student and parent volunteers to help set up the auction tables on the morning of the event at about 8 am until we are done. Please let her know if you are available to help with this.

Modified practice time for Friday, 26 September 2008—Due to a field scheduling conflict, next Friday’s pre-competition will be held at 5 p.m to 7 p.m. Just after the rehearsal, we will need to load up as many trucks and trailers as possible for the following day’s trip to the first competition of the season. This should only take approximately 1 additional hour, so dismissal will be between 8:00 – 8:30 p.m. Exact call times for Saturday morning are still TBD and will be announced by the directors as that time approaches.

Music Day Results and Thank You

Thanks to a BUNCH of people who contributed to this year's Music Day event on Sept. 6. Again this was a big success! The students did another outstanding job in getting the word out there and for their participation in the All City band event held the few days prior and for the follow-up on Saturday morning. To date the total raised thus far has been approximately $19,000-and there are still some outstanding pledges and we still have parents returning the mountain of cans we received as well. But without the organizers, callers, drivers, and other roles that go into an event of this nature, it all doesn't come together. Below is a list (hopefully complete) of the volunteers that also contributed to the overall effort. We'd like to especially thank them for their extra time and commitment to the WSHS Music programs.

Possible Salem, northwest region, even U.S. high school history in the making? If it has been previously accomplished, chances are it was by a certified high school student, but this picture of the week highlights the accomplishments of a Walker Middle School student (Rosie Gottsch)-possibly the first female quad player in at least her category of youngest female to play quads in an Oregon high school marching band.

Titan Auction-Coming Soon!

This year's Titan Auction and Dinner, “Evening of Elegance,” is Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. It is shaping up to be a wonderful evening of FUN. Tickets are $30 per person or $240 for a table of 8. The more full tables we sell the more proceeds we (Band Boosters) receive from the auction. So let's get those tables filled up. Tickets are already selling like hotcakes - there are only 216 left, which is half of what was originally available for the entire evening. Let me know as soon as you decide you want one, two, three or a whole table. Get with your friends and go together on a table. Remember the more full Band Booster tables we put together the more we Band Boosters will receive from the event auction.

With that said, we are also in need of donations big and small. We receive a percentage of each of the items we have donated. We have donation forms so please contact me if you would like to make a donation or have received a donation to go towards the auction. Remember, donations are tax deductible.

We are also in need of a few volunteers to help set up the auction tables the morning of the event, at 8 a.m. This should be band students as well as parents. We need about three students and 1-2 parents. Please let Scotti know if you can help.

Urgent Band Request

CLASSIFIED AD: URGENT EXPERIENCED GRANT WRITIER NEEDED IMMEDIATELY

Dear Band Boosters,

This weekend, we learned of an opportunity to apply for a grant for $1,000-$8,000 from the William Walton Charitable Trust Foundation, a grant for community projects including those for youth and the arts. If we apply for this grant and win it, this would help tremendously with our goal of purchasing the trailer that will help transport our gear to competitions—a purchase that will save us a lot of money in truck rental fees.

The grant is due on September 15th—which is soon! If you are a grant writer, have grant writing experience, or know someone with such experience who would be willing to help us apply for this grant, please contact Vicki Tuttle at Tuttle84@comcast.net.

Tonight! (Friday, 9/5) Marching Band Performs at Halftime of Football Game
The band’s call times are much earlier and they’ve already received their instructions for arrival time to prepare for tonight’s performance. The marching band performs at the “halftime show” of tonight’s first home game at WSHS football field. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. with the halftime show starting at approximately 7:45 to 8:15, depending on game progress, penalties, score, et cetera.

Editor’s Commentary: The REAL show in other words starts at halftime... It should be noted that the players in the marching band are athletes in their own right—football practice did not consist of 12 hour days for 2 weeks straight. Many band members give up playing sports to be ON the marching band, so you’ll see a good show of two different types of athletes at these games. Below is the approximate temperatures for tonight’s game, and you’ll note quite a quick drop between the 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. times, so bring a coat. . .

Tomorrow (Saturday, 9/6) - “Music Day 2008”
Call time is 8:00 and we should be finished about 1:00 or so. Students will need to check in and dress in uniforms right away upon completion of the day. Drivers and other volunteers should be getting a reminder call this week, but we will see you at 8:00 as well. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it is important for everyone to be there. Thanks to all of you who have signed up for teams and for volunteering. Monday, 9/9 - “Jazz Ensemble” First Meeting
The first Jazz Ensemble meeting will be Monday, Sept. 8, at 6:40 a.m. All interested students are encouraged to attend! That is NOT a “typo” folks—that is 0640, as in the morning - so obviously, only the serious musician will apply. And if you’re in “marching band”, you already hold the “keys” to being a serious musician.

I am in the Band Room on Monday mornings from 7:30 - 9:45, and then also on Monday & Wednesday evenings from 8:45 - 9:30. Our email is soggyloafer@comcast.net or you can call my cell phone at (503) 999-4199 and arrange to come by our house to pick some up.

I also have some hand-outs for selling "out-of-state" books to your relatives and still earn credit for the sale. If your family is planning a vacation in another state sometime in 2009, buy a book for that area now. Your student will get the credit for the sale and you'll save a bundle while you're on vacation.

There are white envelopes on the window shelf by the Band Room office marked “E-books”, “Name”, “$” on the front. Fill in the blanks, put your money in the envelope, seal it up and drop it in the green lock box on the wall by the Band Room office. Money needs to be deposited as soon as you receive it.

The sale will run through October 13th, at which time all money will need to be turned in. Any books that are not sold will have to be returned in perfect condition in order to get full credit, or the cost of the book will be added to the student's account.

Please let me know ASAP if you can work concessions for the Freshman Football game. We still need 1 student and 1 adult worker. Arrival time at the concessions stand is 4:30 pm. Each person earns $10-$12 per hour to go toward your “\student account. You shift ends after the game and the concessions have been cleaned up for the night. This is a fun way to earn funds for student accounts. I am in charge of filling these slots so please let me know as soon as you can if you will be able to work. “Band Day”—September 6th

Music Day 2008 is this Saturday, September 6th. Call time is 8:00 and we should be finished about 1:00 or so. Students will need to check in and dress in uniforms right away upon completion of the day. Drivers and other volunteers should be getting a reminder call this week, but we will see you at 8:00 as well. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it is important for everyone to be there. Thanks to all of you who have signed up for teams and for volunteering. Dear Parents,

It has come to our attention that many have been caught off-guard by this year’s “Downtown First Wednesday Performance”—I too am one of those parents. This is the school district’s “First Annual” of this type of event, so it may have been bad timing for most of us, but attached please find the schedule for those students involved. Most all of the students have known of this, and there was even some discussion that this event may not even be happening. Well, it is, and all I’m trying to do is get the message out to the PARENTS (this is not going to most students) on what exactly is happening tomorrow (Wednesday, September 3rd). Note on the top of the handout is a handwritten “3” – the typist’s mistake—I just scanned what I had. See Handout

Since many students’ first day is tomorrow to begin with, they will not be surprised by this event. But the band boosters, instructors, directors, and I wanted to get this out to those parents that do not possess those communications ties with their children (I think that pretty much covers us all from time-to-time J).

If you have any questions, please contact one of the band directors. This is ALL I have at this juncture. Since this IS the first of its event, I’d not hold the times to be precise and there will no doubt be some bumps. That’s what we learn to do here in band: “Adapt and Overcome."

“Band Day”—September 6th
This Saturday, September 6th is the annual all-Salem high school “Band Day” fundraiser. Please be looking out for an update for more information on this event later this week. The students are already aware of this event and it is a very important day to not only WSHS Band but for all the music programs in Salem Keizer School Distsrict.

Band Uniform Update

Marching Uniform Team- The kids all looked great at parent night. Thank you to the parents that helped in making it happen!!! Thank you to all the parents that came up to me on Friday night in the band hall and offered to help.

The following is a short break down of what we need as far as help through the marching season. Everyone is welcome—it’s very rewarding and the kids actually like us around, so some additional volunteers for the below events would be helpful:

For Football games - we need 2-3 parents available to monitor the kids before and after the game. General mom or dad stuff (e.g.,finding shoes, socks, helping with shakos, buttons etc.) During the game and right before half time performance we need a designated plume person with a couple of helpers to put the plumes on the shakos. We have been very lucky to have Roki Hughes do this for many years. Since her kids are no longer in the band we can't expect her to be available for all the games and competitions. Although we love having her we are hoping to get some new parents to step up and take over this honorable position.—not only for plumes but for uniforms as well. because I too will be leaving as my son is a senior this year.

For Competition days - we need 3-4 parents to help stage the uniforms and accessories the night before and to be on site at the Titan Camp to help the kids with their needs when they get dressed and undressed for prelims and for finals. And again to help plume right before they go on the field. Depending on the weather this can be very simple. If it rains extra help is always needed to pass out and collect rain ponchos, hang jackets and ponchos to dry when we get back to the school. Cleaning uniforms and putting away ponchos for the next time. Usually done the following Monday evening.

POST-BAND CAMP REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
As most of the students know, the upcoming week will have rehearsals from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on both Monday, 8/25/08 and Wednesday, 8/27/08

HOLIDAY WEEK REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
The normal Monday rehearsal is off for the Labor Day holiday (Monday September 1st, 2008) but will resume instead on Tuesday, September 2nd, again from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.† The exact time for Wednesday's rehearsal is still being worked out with the football field scheduling, so that is still TBA.

FOOTBALL GAME HALFTIME PERFORMANCE
Friday September 5 is the first home game, and there is a half time performance scheduled.† The students will learn more of the call times, et cetera later this week.

MUSIC DAY, SATURDAY, September 6
More information to come on this later in the newsletter as we approach Thursday, but especially for the "new kids on the block". . . this is a very important and fun day and is one of the largest fund raisers of the year.† So please plan to attend to put in a few hours for this great cause. Again, more information as that becomes available.

UGRENT NOTICE—CHANGE IN BAND CAMP “DINNER BREAK”

There has been a major conflict with the scheduling of/for the turf at WSHS. Apparently the school has added another football team which causes this conflict possibly for the remainder of the week. In order to work around this conflict the band will not break for dinner until 5:00 tonight. Dinner is 5:00-6:00. This of course shortens the dinner break. Evening rehearsal tonight is from 6:00-8:00 and students will be dismissed at 8:00.

We apologize for the change in schedule and the short notice but this was just learned. Please stay tuned for similar changes for Wednesday and Thursday's rehearsals. I will get that information out to you as soon as it is confirmed by the directors.

Special arrangements for ALL BAND STUDENTS to register EARLY

For those in attendance at the all-parent meeting last night (Monday evening, 8/11/08) Mr. Griffiths alluded to a “special arrangement” for ALL band camp members to register for their classes, pictures, student body cards, et cetera. This has been finalized and the text of the memo from Mr. Griffiths appears immediately below:

“All marching band students will be registering and "Taking Care of Business" WEDNESDAY at 10:15 am! Students will be released from rehearsal at 10 am, drop their gear in the A-wing, and enter the line. Parents are asked to send all registration documents to school with their students Wednesday morning, or to meet their students in front of the school at 10:15.”

Hi all,

I hope you've had a great summer so far. It's BOOT CAMP time! And, there's been a change/addition - originally it was announced that Boot Camp for freshmen started Monday August 18th and for everyone else Tuesday August 19th - but, now everyone else is welcome to come on the 18th, just an hour after the freshmen (see the schedule below). We have some special guest artists coming on Tuesday and Wednesday, we'll be passing out tuxes/dresses, and we'll be starting symphony auditions. You may RSVP and/or simply come. If you know any incoming freshman orchestra members, please make sure they know to come. Here are the details:

TITAN ORCHESTRA BOOT CAMP

Fee: $25 per student. Cash or check to "WSHS Music Boosters"
Snack provided every day, please bring your own drink.

Choir News

Dear friends:

For the past six years, I have had the honor of being the choir director at West. It is a job I have loved and enjoyed immensely. However, i have decided to follow a new path in my career and will no longer be teaching choir.

In my new position, I will be the Behavior Resource Specialist at West. I will be working with students on how to be more successful in their school experience.

This was not an easy decision to make and one that I spent many hours thinking about. I know that Mr. John is committed to finding an excellent choir director to continue the traditions we have built.

I wish Mrs. McIntyre the best in her new assignment. I appreciate the outstanding job she did for us and I am proud of the accomplishments the choir program has made.

After a national search of qualified applicants and interviewing five top-notch choir directors, we have hired Mr. Jesse Angelo. Mr. Angelo graduated with highest honors in vocal music education and choir directing from Luther College in Iowa. His latest teaching assignment was LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts in New York. We are delighted to have Mr. Angelo as our new choir director. I think he is the perfect match for our school.

We will set up a time later in August for choir students and parents to meet Mr. Angelo.

Finalize Painting and Assembly of “Props”
We did not complete our painting task the other day and got rained out today. Again, sorry for the short notice, but if we can get as many as possible to paint and assemble, this might be a short task. Here is the schedule for Saturday, August 2nd:

Painting Crew: 9:00-11:30 (I'm looking for 6-8 helpers to finish painting the jail bars)
Assembly Crew: 11:30-2:30 (I'm looking for about 15-20 helpers to assemble the jail bar props)
Where? At the West Salem High School A Wing

We will have some paint brushes and a few little containers to hold paint but if you would like please bring your own, it will help things go faster. Saw horses or large buckets might be helpful for laying the wood across while we paint to get them up off the ground. If you can spare an old rag please feel free to bring one along.
