High school teacher Ike Nail earns educator award from symphony group

West Salem High School band director Ike Nail was named Music Educator of the Year by the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem.
The association announced its selection Tuesday.
Nail was chosen after an OSAS adjudication committee visited his classroom and was immediately impressed by his approach to teaching his wind ensemble students, association members said in an announcement.
"As students quietly came into class, it was apparent they were eager to be there," the announcement said. "Dr. Nail's enthusiasm and sense of humor were embraced by his students. He worked with students not only on getting the notes, but the musical expression and feeling that is such an important component of the performance."
West Salem's music programs will receive a $1,000 check as part of the recognition.
Nominees for the award included Carol Stenson, South Salem choir; Sara Linsell, Leslie Middle School band; Steve Phillips, Auburn Elementary School general music and choir; and Andy Thomas, Whiteaker Middle School choir.
Nail began teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District at Sprague High School, where he was the co-recipient of two Grammy Awards. He began at West Salem in the school's inaugural year.

Late, late edition
Competition Wrap-Up at U of O’s Festival of Bands Reaps Prelim Sweep, 2A Championship

Although this late edition brings old news, it can’t go without saying how stellar the WSHS Marching Band performed in this, their final competitive performance of the year. In the same fashion of the three previous competitions, the band placed first in high score in the preliminary show. Going out in final performance style, the band took EVERY SINGLE “Caption Award” for their performances. Placing 4th overall in finals competition with the highest score in the school’s history, the final performance garnered a score of 90+ points, separating them just a few points from the “Open” class powerhouse bands. During the finals award ceremony, the band was presented their 2A Championship trophy and ALSO won the “Best Solo” award for all of the soloists playing in the show.

Winter Drumline Information Meeting, Monday, Nov. 10

There will be a short meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons to gather and give out information on this year’s Winter Drumline. Discussed at this past Tuesday’s band meeting, the color guard and drum line will compete in separate classes and be separate from each other. The color guard will have a separate meeting and notification. If you have any interest for this year’s Winter Drum Line, this is the meeting you must attend to gather the necessary information, costs, preliminary schedule, and more.

We understand this conflicts with the “Crystal Apple” awards rally for Mr. Rundquist, but there was no other reasonable date available to schedule this differently. Please join us to honor the band members and the entire team of our 2A champs!
Auction—Sold Out!

Looks like tickets are sold out (if you missed out and really want to go, let me know, there may be some tickets available but not at specific tables). Music Boosters has three tables this year that is one more than last year. Thanks everyone! That is great! However, we are still in need of donations, big or small—all are appreciated. Just e-mail Scotti at ndrsmom@comcast.net or give her a call at (503) 269-0887. The deadline for items to be considered for verbal auction is the 6th (Scotti needs them by that date) for the silent auction the 13th. We have some great auction items, about 5 or 6 right now, let’s shoot for 10.
We still need a few volunteers to help set up the morning of the auction from about 8am-11am, parents and or students are welcome. Please let Scotti know if you can help. Thanks, everyone!

WSHS Band Bulletin
Regularly scheduled “Band Meeting” rescheduled for Thursday, November 6th

Due to the obvious conflict with Election Day 2008, the regularly scheduled “first Tuesday” Band Meeting will yield to this more important day. Therefore, the “Band Meeting” for the month of November has been rescheduled to this Thursday, November 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the band room. Basically same time and place, just a different day for this month only. Sorry for the late notice or any inconvenience this may have caused.

Looking Forward: Remainder of May, June Schedule

A suggestion from a reader asked that we place this section up-front, so we'll try that this week and possibly through the end of the year. This might be an especially helpful suggestion as we wind down to the end of the school year. The below table of "Looking Forward" has been updated to include activities that go up to the end of May and recently added the final event of the Graduation Performance for June 5. Date
The 2008 Band Awards Ceremony is slated for 7 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, in the COMMONS. We hope to see as many of you there as possible!
Warning: Possible Parking Lot Congestion on May 22

There will be possible parking congestion on the above Band Awards night. Since this event is in the Commons, it might be best to park as close to the front entrance of the school as possible. This will leave the Auditorium lot (lower lot) available for the multiple events that will also be taking place that evening ("Jazz Night Voice Vocals" at 6 p.m. and then an Orchestra event following that). I'm sure the parents and students attending the auditorium events would appreciate it and you may also find it more convenient for yourselves as well.
Concert Attire: End-of-year turn in

Please be ready to turn in your concert attire in the coming weeks. Those of you whose last concert is the Spring Concert (May 29), you can start turning them in that night or the following day (May 30). If you plan on turning it in at the conclusion of the Spring
Concert, you'd obviously want to bring a change of clothes, change after the concert then you don't have to try to remember them the next day.
Contest deadline is midnight, May 23

I can't make this any easier, but there are still plenty of spaces available to enter the contest that was published in the last 2 weeks' newsletters. To save space here I'm not going to place it here again, but you can refer to newsletters #37 and it was reprinted (in much smaller print) last week in #38. So look for it in one of those newsletters if you wanted to enter. You have until midnight, Friday, May 23. The winner will be announced at the May 30 "Jazz Night," and the winner need not be present to win. Remember it's open to all parents, teachers, and students. So far we have several of each that have EXTREMELY good odds of winning!

- Boys - Turn in Tux Jacket and Pants only hanging in the green garment bag with your name in the front (clear) pocket.
- Girls - Turn in your Dress in the green garment bag also with your name in the front pocket.
- Jazz Band and Symphony will need to start turning theirs in after June 2. It's important that your name be attached, otherwise the school will charge you for the attire and place any student records on hold.
- Seniors: If you would like to donate your bow ties, tux shirts or marching shoes (good condition only) that would be great we can always use them.

- Lab II studio recording session on Friday, May 23 – Students should have their times
- Drum Major and Color Guard Captain auditions on the following Tuesday (May 27 – first day back to school after holiday). All interested students are invited to participate in the first part of the process, beginning right after school.
- Band Concert (a.k.a. Spring Concert) on May 29 – Show time is slated for 6 - 9 p.m. Check with directors for musicians' call times
- Jazz night on the May 30 – see associated article from Kami Hettwer
- Graduation on June 5: All bands will play. Last year there were problems with parents picking up their students after the event, but the WSHS administration is working on creating a solution for us this year. Stay tuned. . .
- Jazz Lab I – add a rehearsal for Wednesday, May 28 at 5 p.m. (editor's note: goes to ? – how good are you ? -J)

- help decorating in the afternoon (kids are good for that but it would be nice to have some parents helping)
- two parents to sell tickets on either side of the commons
- one parent to sell Jazz CD (IF they come in before the 30th) a few parents to help serve at the dessert table
- Clean-up crew (3 or 4—the more the merrier -J)
- Several parents/students to distribute posters around town (get one to hang up at your work/office)—the attached flyer ("jazz night poster 08") has all the information, but it is 11x17 so you might need to pick some up at the school for distribution (email Kami)
- Any parent with connections to Statesman Journal and West Side News to publish a blurb for the event?

Call Time: Approx. 6:00 p.m. (at WSHS)
IMPORTANT NOTE for this event: All students need to have a plan for traveling from West to the Convention Center (and back)—the event, once there will be quite short. All students are asked to wear Duck or Beaver colors, and to bring extra Duck or Beaver attire for students who may not have any. This is a semi-formal event, so dress tastefully, please. We know that this could be difficult with the bold colors of the two colleges, but slacks, skirts, and nice shoes as appropriate. This will be a fairly SHORT gig, so make sure your ride is available for the return trip as well.
Tomorrow's Events (Friday, November 30, 2007)

Most already know about the WSHS Playoff Game at PGE Park: Friday evening at 8 p.m. As discussed at the Band Awards, Call Time for this event will be 4:45 p.m. at WSHS. STUDENTS: Please remember to bring a sack dinner and wear as warm clothes as possible (as well as rainwear if necessary). We will probably bring the ponchos, but extra personal rain gear for your personal comfort. The word on the news is that Friday's high will be 35 and low around 28. Since the team is playing late it's going to be cold. Also see requests below. . .

Thanks again to all the Band Boosters, parents, and students for making it to the Band Awards this past Tuesday evening! It was a great success on this second attempt. Free Chamber Music Concert at Willamette
Chamber Music at Hudson Hall on Thursday, November 29th, just after holding the clinic for WSHS, Mr. Wytko will be sharing the stage with Randy Kem, David Ingram and guests such as Andy Kronser, Richard such, Greg Angeloni and Mark Powers. This concert will be at 8:00 p.m. and is also FREE!
Percussion/Marimba Clinic at Weathers Music
There will be a special guest soloist coming to Weather's Music. Nathan Daughtrey will perform on a special five octave marimba made available through Weathers music. Nathan Daughtrey, a clinician endorsed by Vic Firth and Yamaha, will conduct a special (FREE) clinic in the Bach Room at Weathers Music on Friday, December 14th at 4:00 p.m.. Marimba and mallet players from the area are invited to this free clinic.
Uniform Fittings – Formal Concert Attire—Time is running out!

Hey All...Just an update... We are on schedule so far with the design...it is looking pretty cool! We still need about 7 people to be prop people, so if any of your friends want to participate have them email me. The first dates for the season are the music camp dates...Dec 15 and 16 (Sat/Sun) Sat will be 9 am-9 pm, and Sunday will be 9 am-4 pm. These dates are mandatory (as are all of our dates), so be sure to plan accordingly. (The guard may have a slightly different schedule...check with Jen).

For those that may need assistance on raising funds for your interests (Winter Ensemble, fair share balance, etc), there will be an opportunity to work shifts at the Christmas Tree booth that Mr. Urbani announced at the Band Awards Tuesday evening. IMPORTANT NOTE for this event: All students need to have a plan for traveling from West to the Convention Center (and back)—the event, once there will be quite short. All students are asked to wear Duck or Beaver colors, and to bring extra Duck or Beaver attire for students who may not have any. This is a semi-formal event, so dress tastefully, please. We know that this could be difficult with the bold colors of the two colleges, but slacks, skirts, and nice shoes as appropriate. This will be a fairly SHORT gig, so make sure your ride is available for the return trip as well.

Most already know about the WSHS Playoff Game at PGE Park: Friday evening at 8 p.m. As discussed at the Band Awards, Call Time for this event will be 4:45 p.m. at WSHS. STUDENTS: Please remember to bring a sack dinner and wear as warm clothes as possible (as well as rainwear if necessary). We will probably bring the ponchos, but extra personal rain gear for your personal comfort. The word on the news is that Friday's high will be 35 and low around 28. Since the team is playing late it's going to be cold. Also see requests below. . .

Thanks again to all the Band Boosters, parents, and students for making it to the Band Awards this past Tuesday evening! It was a great success on this second attempt. Any students who were not able to attend may pick up their awards in the band room. Thanks again for a great Marching Band Season! Now onto the rest of the school year!

Free Chamber Music Concert at Willamette
Chamber Music at Hudson Hall on Thursday, November 29th, just after holding the clinic for WSHS, Mr. Wytko will be sharing the stage with Randy Kem, David Ingram and guests such as Andy Kronser, Richard such, Greg Angeloni and Mark Powers. This concert will be at 8:00 p.m. and is also FREE!
Percussion/Marimba Clinic at Weathers Music
There will be a special guest soloist coming to Weather's Music. Nathan Daughtrey will perform on a special five octave marimba made available through Weathers music. Nathan Daughtrey, a clinician endorsed by Vic Firth and Yamaha, will conduct a special (FREE) clinic in the Bach Room at Weathers Music on Friday, December 14th at 4:00 p.m.. Marimba and mallet players from the area are invited to this free clinic.
Uniform Fittings – Formal Concert Attire—Time is running out!

Hey All...Just an update... We are on schedule so far with the design...it is looking pretty cool! We still need about 7 people to be prop people, so if any of your friends want to participate have them email me. The first dates for the season are the music camp dates...Dec 15 and 16 (Sat/Sun) Sat will be 9 am-9 pm, and Sunday will be 9 am-4 pm. These dates are mandatory (as are all of our dates), so be sure to plan accordingly. (The guard may have a slightly different schedule...check with Jen).
