Late, late edition

Competition Wrap-Up at U of O’s Festival of Bands Reaps Prelim Sweep, 2A Championship
(Contributor: Jesse Seeley)
Although this late edition brings old news, it can’t go without saying how stellar the WSHS Marching Band performed in this, their final competitive performance of the year. In the same fashion of the three previous competitions, the band placed first in high score in the preliminary show. Going out in final performance style, the band took EVERY SINGLE “Caption Award” for their performances. Placing 4th overall in finals competition with the highest score in the school’s history, the final performance garnered a score of 90+ points, separating them just a few points from the “Open” class powerhouse bands. During the finals award ceremony, the band was presented their 2A Championship trophy and ALSO won the “Best Solo” award for all of the soloists playing in the show.

Winter Drumline Information Meeting, Monday, Nov. 10
(Contributor: Alan Keown, Jesse Seeley)
There will be a short meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons to gather and give out information on this year’s Winter Drumline. Discussed at this past Tuesday’s band meeting, the color guard and drum line will compete in separate classes and be separate from each other. The color guard will have a separate meeting and notification. If you have any interest for this year’s Winter Drum Line, this is the meeting you must attend to gather the necessary information, costs, preliminary schedule, and more.

Band Awards Night—Nov. 13
(Contributor: Kami Hettwer)
This year’s band awards will be held at 7 p.m. (to approximately 9 p.m.) in the school Commons area. We understand this conflicts with the “Crystal Apple” awards rally for Mr. Rundquist, but there was no other reasonable date available to schedule this differently. Please join us to honor the band members and the entire team of our 2A champs!

Auction—Sold Out!
(Contributor: Scotti Rylands)
Looks like tickets are sold out (if you missed out and really want to go, let me know, there may be some tickets available but not at specific tables). Music Boosters has three tables this year that is one more than last year. Thanks everyone! That is great! However, we are still in need of donations, big or small—all are appreciated. Just e-mail Scotti at ndrsmom@comcast.net or give her a call at (503) 269-0887. The deadline for items to be considered for verbal auction is the 6th (Scotti needs them by that date) for the silent auction the 13th. We have some great auction items, about 5 or 6 right now, let’s shoot for 10.

We still need a few volunteers to help set up the morning of the auction from about 8am-11am, parents and or students are welcome. Please let Scotti know if you can help. Thanks, everyone!

A Growing Trend? WSHS Band Takes 1st Place at PCI !
(Contributor: Jesse Seeley, Kami Hettwer)
More hard work, and yet another pay off for the musicians of the WSHS Marching Band as they took home the big trophy for their overall preliminary and finals performances. Sweeping nearly every “caption award” in the preliminary of finals competition, each and every marching band and color guard member contributed in this overall team effort in “High Visuals,” “High General Effect” and “High Percussion.”

Featured in the Statesman Journal, more play-by-play details can be read at Statesman Journal Article -- it will probably only be available until the 19th of October.

Rain, rain, go away—In their Thursday football game performance, photographer Joe Gottsch captured this picture and the beautiful combination effect of light and water in the sousaphone section. Luckily, the rain has only been on our games and some practices J

Auction Update
(Contributor: Scotti Rylands)
Remember the date: November 22, 2008—The end of October is sneaking up on us. To be considered for the live auction all donations must be turned in by November 1st and “Silent Auction” by November 7th. We have received some great donations for Music Boosters including a Guided Fishing Trip (waiting for more details), 5 nights at a Sunriver Condo (sleeps 8), gift baskets, and more. We still need a lot more though. If you have a donation or can get one for us, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms that also act as a tax deductible receipt.

And with all those great prizes who would want to miss the fun? There are still tickets available. Music Boosters are trying hard to fill our second table. Please contact Scotti with the names of each person you need a ticket for. She will give you the information at that time for payment on the tickets. Remember it is $30 per person and does include dinner.

If you have already bought a ticket and want to part of our tables, please let us know. The more tickets we sell the higher our portion of the donations will be. For each full table we get 100% of the money raised for 1 item of our choice, from our donations. You can see why we want to fill as many tables as possible. You can contact Scotti at ndrsmom@comcast.net or by phone at (503) 269-0887 or (503) 581-4118.

Music Day Results and Thank You
(Contributor: Marianne Stipe, Denise Gilmore)
Thanks to a BUNCH of people who contributed to this year's Music Day event on Sept. 6. Again this was a big success! The students did another outstanding job in getting the word out there and for their participation in the All City band event held the few days prior and for the follow-up on Saturday morning. To date the total raised thus far has been approximately $19,000-and there are still some outstanding pledges and we still have parents returning the mountain of cans we received as well. But without the organizers, callers, drivers, and other roles that go into an event of this nature, it all doesn't come together. Below is a list (hopefully complete) of the volunteers that also contributed to the overall effort. We'd like to especially thank them for their extra time and commitment to the WSHS Music programs.

Possible Salem, northwest region, even U.S. high school history in the making? If it has been previously accomplished, chances are it was by a certified high school student, but this picture of the week highlights the accomplishments of a Walker Middle School student (Rosie Gottsch)-possibly the first female quad player in at least her category of youngest female to play quads in an Oregon high school marching band.

Titan Auction-Coming Soon!
(Contributor: Scotti Rylands)
This year's Titan Auction and Dinner, “Evening of Elegance,” is Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. It is shaping up to be a wonderful evening of FUN. Tickets are $30 per person or $240 for a table of 8. The more full tables we sell the more proceeds we (Band Boosters) receive from the auction. So let's get those tables filled up. Tickets are already selling like hotcakes - there are only 216 left, which is half of what was originally available for the entire evening. Let me know as soon as you decide you want one, two, three or a whole table. Get with your friends and go together on a table. Remember the more full Band Booster tables we put together the more we Band Boosters will receive from the event auction.

With that said, we are also in need of donations big and small. We receive a percentage of each of the items we have donated. We have donation forms so please contact me if you would like to make a donation or have received a donation to go towards the auction. Remember, donations are tax deductible.

We are also in need of a few volunteers to help set up the auction tables the morning of the event, at 8 a.m. This should be band students as well as parents. We need about three students and 1-2 parents. Please let Scotti know if you can help.

Please contact Scotti Rylands at (503) 269-0887 for questions, donation forms and ticket and/or table sales ($30 per person or $240 per table). You can also reach her by e-mail at ndrsmom@comcast.net .

Thank you. I am sure the night will be a blast!

Uniform Update: All Band Members Must Have Black Socks!
(Contributor: Deanna Garney)
Please remember to bring black socks when dressing in uniform. No ankle-length or quarter socks. They must cover your ankles completely. Pick up a bag of inexpensive black cotton socks from Target, Fred Meyers, Wal Mart... You will need to have 2-3 on hand at competitions. There is nothing worse then spending an entire day marching in wet socks. We also need to have some in stock at school to help out those who do forget theirs, so if some of you could donate a bag that would be great. If there are any questions or concerns regarding uniforms please contact me at anytime: Deanna Garney at dg5758@comcast.net

Summertime news brief

Summer Fun, Concerts, Events to Plan for

The Sound of Caribbean—Come Listen, Learn to Play the Steel Drum
(Contributor: Blair Davis, edited by Jesse Seeley)
Come to a FREE practice concert tonight and hear the “sound of the Caribbean”—the steel drums. Tonight’s performance is more of a private gathering to see what is to come at this weekend’s “World Beat”. That will be something to come and see too, but there is admission to that performance (not sure of how much), but West Salem band members group called “Steel Time” will be playing the steel drums (pans) in making the sounds made famous in the Caribbean. “Steel Time” will be performing this Sunday (June 29th) at 4:00 p.m. in the “Americas Area”. Anyone that would like to enjoy some music or wants to learn how to play them next year during the school year should DEFINITELY come tonight and then to the “World Beat” event this Sunday. Here’s more specifics:
  • Tonight, Friday, June 27 Bush Park, at approximately 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 29 “World Beat” event will be playing at 4 p.m. (Editor’s note: at Bush Park I’m assuming, contributor didn’t specifically state)
For any questions concerning this, please contact Blair Davis via email at wublu07@yahoo.com

Band Camp Uniform Fittings
(Contributor: Deanna Garney)
We will need help from parents at this year’s band camp for fitting members for their Uniforms. We will need about 4-5 people for at least 4 separate evenings from 6-9pm. The first couple of nights we fit gloves and shoes. Then we fit uniforms & shakos (the band “hats”). I think the most help will be needed for the uniforms and shakos. You don't need to know how to sew. If you can hem pants that is a great value add to the team, but not necessary. It's easy to do and goes much quicker if there is plenty of help. Also, I think we will need at least 3-4 people to commit to helping with Football games and Competitions. It would be great if we had a designated “Plume” person.

For details, contact Deanna Garney via email at dg5758@comcast.net

Titan Auction—Still Seeking Help
(Contributor: Kami Hettwer)
We’re still seeking help for the 2008 Titan Auction. It’s not too soon to start thinking about this November 2008 event, so please mark it on your calendar. The Titan Foundation Auction will be held on November 22nd 2008. We need help collecting items for silent and oral auction and we need help selling tickets to the event. The more tables of 8 we sell the more money we get from our items we sell at the auction. Let's get a team together now so that we can start planning for next year's auction and raise needed funds in support of our great band program! For more information, please contact Kami Hettwer mkhett@aol.com.

Band Camp—Dates/Reminder
(Contributors: Kami Hettwer, Directors, Jesse Seeley)
There is an attached flyer with the below information as well as more detail on this upcoming event. We wanted to get the word out as soon as possible before all took off for the summer and also to better plan your summer vacations and to get this on your calendars right away. Studentsà tell any/all your friends at the Middle School level (that will be incoming freshmen) about this in the event they’d like to participate—many times they don’t find out or “get the word” because we don’t sent to a middle school distribution list and only siblings of other WSHS end up “in the know”. Below are the dates of both the “Pre-Camp” and the regular two-week session everyone knows as “Band Camp."

  • Event: “Pre-Camp”

Parent Volunteers Sought for help at “Band Camp”
(Contributors: Michelle Pavelek, edited by Jesse Seeley)
Mark your calendars now as this will creep up on us and our vacations. What better way to get to see the development of a great program but with a “front row seat” at every rehearsal (well, if you WANT to see every one J). The now infamous “Titan Band Camp” is scheduled for August 11-22!!! Here are some ways that you can support our award winning marching band and your volunteer time would be greatly appreciated:

  • Chaperone at the Lock-in on August 15th
  • Help at the parent night potluck on Friday, August 22nd
  • Serve breakfast on August 16th (morning after the “lock-in”)

Notes from Band Booster Meeting (held November 19, 2007)
(Contributor: Vickie Tuttle, Jesse Seeley)
Below are abbreviated notes from the recent Band Booster Meeting held this past Monday to discuss the ongoing volunteer and program needs of the WSHS Music and MB Program. Continuing leadership and volunteer structure was discussed along with immediate goals for the 2008-09 year. More detailed minutes should become available in the near future. Some action items were discussed and will be covered at our next meeting on January as well as publication of budgets and detailed information of how the organization is run. Some immediate goals discussed and tabled for action at our January meeting are:
• Create silk boutonnieres and corsages for OSAA and jazz events — tabled
• Design and plan for construction of better shelving in the Percussion Room
• Request for some major storage solutions for Music Department. Immediate call for anyone who has a connection to, or storage facility available to store MB equipment at a nominal rate or donation. At minimum we have a large timpani trailer, pit rack and prop carts that need to be stored offsite of the school until a more permanent solution is found.
• Need for trailer to haul percussion equipment to the percussion gig at the Fairgrounds on Saturday, December 8th.
• Trip Coordinator will be needed for the 2008-2009 Year. Directors will present trip ideas at the January Booster Meeting.
• Discussion and vote on fees for the 2008 fall marching season.
• Vacant volunteer positions to be filled for the 2008-2009 School year. Planning ahead - Fundraising Coordinator, MB Events Coordinator, Auction Coordinator, Music Day Coordinator as well as committee members. We have many parent volunteers that will be graduating with their students this year and next year. If you want to see the program continue to grow and prosper please plan to help contribute in some small way.

“Band Awards”—Fire Drill
(Contributors: Vickie Tuttle, Jesse Seeley)
It was a nice try, but fire alarms and a mandatory evacuation halted this and other events going on last night at a VERY busy WSHS. To all of those that contributed to the lovely desserts and refreshments, we can’t thank you enough! We were advised earlier (separate email from Vickie) that those desserts would somehow make their way to the music department, teachers, and possibly the fire department. We now will move to Plan B — as soon as we figure out what Plan B is you’ll be updated. We await word on when the awards event will be rescheduled—stay tuned here for the next update or newsletter.

For those who were expecting to pick up their DVDs, please contact Jim McKinnell and myself and we will schedule a time for pickup/distribution or obtain your mailing address to direct mail to your house.

Winter Ensemble (a.k.a. “Winter Guard” or “Winter Drum Line”)
(Contributor: Jesse Seeley)
There was a great turnout at this past Monday evening’s meeting. Topics discussed were the details of the program, schedule, venues, and costs. There was a handout that included most of this information. If you were unable to attend the meeting and would still like information, please contact: Mr. Griffiths Griffiths_brian@salkeiz.k12.or.us

If you’d like a copy of the handout please send me email directly (jesse@hp.com), include in the subject line “Winter Ensemble Handout” and it will be sent to you

Band Booster Meeting—Monday, November 19th
(Contributor: Vickie Tuttle)
Important - Now that Marching Season is complete the Band Boosters will be holding a Booster Meeting every other month on the 3rd Monday. Our fist one will be Monday, November 19th. I will be trying to get the Titan Room but if we don't then it will be held in the band room. It will be held at 6:45 p.m. The meetings will be held in November, January, March and May. These meetings will be important in maintaining a well functioning support team for the band and continuity so that as senior parents graduate out there is time to pass on vital information and structure. We still have many activities in the coming year to support such as: Concerts, Winter Percussion, Color Guard, Solo's and Ensemble, Jazz Trip to Idaho, Fund Raising, OSAA Contests, Jazz Night, and also a major goal of a storage unit or site. Please plan on attending if at all possible. Everyone is welcome!

Order DVD of all WSHS Marching Band Events
(Contributor: Jesse Seeley, Jim McKinnell)
For those who’ve already placed your orders for these DVDs, they will be ready at tonight’s (Wednesday) Band Awards. If you didn’t order one, there may be a few available — minimally there’ll be a sign-up sheet if you’d like a copy of your own. This menu-driven production is available for you to order for a mere donation to the band (a $10 suggested donation is a good round number J). Again, we’d like to get these into every parent and grandparents’ home, so if you can’t find the funds, let us know so we can help you get this priceless memory in a DVD player (or Christmas stocking) near you J. To order via email, send to: jim.mckinnell@hp.com. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery to your house if you don’t pick one up tonight. Make checks payable to “WSHS Band Boosters.”

FINAL Note from Chef Mary on Meal Planning (she graduates this year L)
(Contributors: Entire volunteer team)
We can ALWAYS use a little bit of extra help at mealtime (approximately 4:30-6:00 p.m.). So if you want to just come on down and give us a hand that would be great! Don’t feel shy! We can use all the help possible to get the musicians back to their jobs of getting ready. If you have any questions on where to go, please contact Vickie Tuttle or Kami Hettwer

Picture of the week
(Contributor: Photo by Steve Anderson, editorial by Jesse Seeley)
They affectionately call themselves Gearheads J The audience only really sees the gears, but this team is the integral part (literally) in this year’s band providing the behind-the-scenes turning of the gears visual effect. With the added visual effect they provided and the color guard’s great work at our very first competition this year, they helped garner one of this year’s earlier caption awards for visuals and effects. The Gearheads are:
1st row (sitting): Shannon Maltzan, Isaac Sutton, Miranda Bolstad
2nd row (kneeling): Emma Nielsen, Peter Anderson, Hannah Hill, Jenessa Hettwer
3rd row (standing): Rory Phillips, Matlyn Perry, Miranda Morse, Sky McKinnell, Rachelle Grenya, Ethan Sutton, Carl Kreitzberg

We couldn’t leave this subject without mentioning that there was significant input on the musical perspective and the timing of the gears to the music. This was provided by the chaperone of the Gearheads, Connie Phillips. And of course the entire project was taken on and coordinated by (as well as musical instruction the timing of the spinning) Kami Hettwer. Thank you to the entire team of Gearheads! It couldn’t have been done without you!

These pictures (above) will be made available to the parents of the Gearheads and were not part of Joe Gottsch’s Web site this week. Because last week’s show was out of town, Joe Gottsch was not able to attend, but I’ll again mention his Web site in case you haven’t had a chance to visit Joe’s website, here it is again: WestSidePhoto.net. Visiting is FREE!

Editor’s Corner: Quote/thought for the week
(Contributor: Mary Eastridge, Jesse Seeley)
Mary brought up a good quote for the week and is especially for those that volunteer their time to a common cause. In particular of course the WSHS Marching Band volunteers, this one is especially for you.

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

Orchestra News

1) Thank you to all students, parents, families and friends for attending the Fall Orchestra concert. Anyone interested in a very non-professional video of the concert is welcome to bring a CDR to Ms. Silberman who will burn them a copy. Huge thank you to the parents who helped out before, during, and after the concert - your help is so valuable and appreciated!

2) Salem Chamber Orchestra is playing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon - a special concert 'side-by-side' with the Salem Youth Symphony strings. Information can be found at www.salemchamberorchestra.org - student tickets are $5, as always. Remember, students need to turn in 2 concert reviews per semester - and very few students, to date, have turned in a review. Students also receive extra credit points for attending SCO and Oregon Symphony concerts.

3) Another great concert-going opportunity: The Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series will present the St. Lawrence String Quartet with clarinetist Todd Palmer on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Hall at Willamette University. The quartet will present a master class for strings Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 11:30-2:30 p.m. The class is free and will be in Hudson Hall on the Willamette campus.

Any student in my String Ensemble or Symphony Strings class would be easily 'excused' from my class if they were to attend the free master class. Students could review this masterclass for review credit and apply for 'extra credit' upon showing proof of attending the masterclass. The Monday evening concert will be great - the Grosse Fuge is one of my favorite Beethoven string quartets!

The quartet has inspired audiences across the globe with recent tours of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Their recordings have garnered critical acclaim, drawing Grammy nominations and winning Canada's Juno Award and Germany's Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, and are available at the Pentacle Theatre Ticket Office in Salem at 145 Liberty Street NE, Suite 102. Tickets can be charged over the phone by calling (503) 485-4300, and are subject to a service charge. For information call the Willamette University Music Department at (503) 370-6255.

4) CALLING ALL PARENTS! Please come to the next Orchestra Boosters meeting in the Orchestra room on Tuesday, November 6th, 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing finances, fundraising, retreat organization, future concert dates, and more. E-mail Jenny Gates with other suggested agenda items.

5) This is the last weekend for Entertainment book sales. Unsold books and payments for sold books need to be turned in by October 30th. Contact Linda Beardsley at 503-399-6443 or lindab4858@comcast.net with questions.

6) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. We have two tables reserved for any Orchestra parents/boosters who would like to sit together. A whole table qualifies us for 100% instead of 50% of the selling price of an Orchestra-donated auction item. If you would like to be at one of these tables, please do not buy your own tickets. You'll pay for tickets being held. Tickets are $30 each, regardless of where you sit, and are otherwise available from Susan Tolley, at Today's Hair, or at the front desk at school. Do you have an appealing item or service to donate? Contact Jenny Gates. The deadline for big-ticket oral auction items is November 2nd. The deadline for silent auction items is November 14th. Donation forms, more details, etc. are available - please ask. The theme for the evening is "007" and decorations will be casino-oriented.

7) Ms. Silberman posted new links to music for the holiday concert for students on the blog (www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com) - please navigate to the blog for information.

8) Poinsettia order deadline is Monday, Oct, 29!
The deadline for poinsettia orders/money is October 29th. The profit to student accounts can't be figured until the sale is complete, but in years' past has been about $6-7 per poinsettia and about $9 per wreath. Put orders and payments in the orchestra lock box.

The deadline for wreath orders/money is November 8th.

Pick-up for all items is November 30th/December 1st.

Orchestra News

1) Concert Tuesday October 23 is at 7 pm - call time for all students (dressed with instruments tuned and ready to go) is 5:45 pm. A few students seem to be unclear about the 'black socks or tights' policy -all young ladies are to wear opaque tights or socks and closed toed shoes with a heel strap or solid backed heel - all young men are to wear tux, cummerbund, tie, tux shirt, black socks and concert dress shoes -not sneakers!! Mr. Formal currently has a fantastic sale for students needing tux and shoe items. All students must have proper concert attire or they will not be allowed to play on concert night - please email Ms. Silberman directly (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us) if there are *any* questions regarding attire. We look forward to seeing you at the concert!

2) Parent conferences for West Salem High School are Nov. 7 and 8 - if there are any concerns or questions that you know you'd like Ms. Silberman to address at your meeting time, feel free to touch base with her via email or phone before the meeting. Please use this conference time to discuss any issues regarding practice time, private lessons, and instruments or materials. If you are unable to meet with Ms. Silberman during the schedule conference times but you wish to meet with her, please contact her directly to make arrangements.

3) Saturday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. in Hudson Hall at Willamette the Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing "side-by-side" with the Salem Youth Symphony string sections - this is a fantastic concert-going opportunity for both students and parents. Come support members of the Salem Keizer School District Music Faculty and West Salem Titan Orchestra members by attending one of the concerts. Student tickets are $5.00 at the door. Check the SCO website: www.salemchamberorchestra.org.

4) 7) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. Tickets are $30 each, regardless of where you sit, and are otherwise available from Susan Tolley (lstolley7@msn.com), at Today's Hair, or at the front desk at school. Do you have an appealing item or service to donate? Contact Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com or reply to this e-mail. The deadline for big-ticket oral auction items is November 2nd. The deadline for silent auction items is November 14th. Donation forms, more details, etc. are available - please ask. The theme for the evening is "007" and decorations will be casino-oriented.

5) Entertainment book sales are going well! Ms. Silberman will celebrate sales by inviting all students who sell at least one book to a special lunch treat - and the student who sells the most in each class will get
a trip to the 'treasure chest'. Wreath and poinsettia sales are ongoing. The deadline for poinsettia orders/money is October 29th. The deadline for wreath orders/money is November 8th. Pick-up for all items is November 30th/December 1st. The profit to student accounts can't be figured until the sale is complete, but in years' past has been about $6-7.00 per poinsettia and about $9.00 per wreath.

6) Calling All Parents, Calling All Parents - please come to an open meeting of the Orchestra Booster club at 6:30pm (after Symphony rehearsal) on Tuesday evening Nov. 6. in the Orchestra room. Items on the agenda include retreat information for early spring, financial expenditures, and holiday concert reception possibilities. Please send any other agenda suggestions to Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com

7) Dr. Nail and Ms. Silberman are entertaining the possibility of continuing with Tuesday evening 4:30 - 6:30pm rehearsals once the full symphony comes together in November (after Marching Band is finished). If this is a huge inconvenience for any string members, please contact Ms. Silberman. An official announcement about the time will be made in the next week.

Orchestra News

1) Entertainment book sales are going well - thank you to the Boosters and Linda Beardsley for helping with the sales. All unsold books and payments are due by October 30th. You are responsible for the books you check out. Students will earn $8 - 10 for each $20 book they sell, and often the books sell themselves! Amanda McCloud, in Per 5, turned in the first concert review, so Ms. Silberman bought an Entertainment book from her. The first person to turn in the next review will get a poinsettia purchase from Ms. Silberman. The Wreaths and Poinsettia sale has begun for students who chose to sell. Students received a very informative packet complete with a good instruction sheet. Wreath/poinsettia order forms and payments should be turned together just once, and checks won't be deposited until after the order deadline. (Customers may want to know their checks won't be cashed until early-mid November.)

2) When students sell books, wreaths/poinsettias, or work concession booths at games, the money earned goes into their individual student accounts. These accounts are active until graduation. We *WILL* go on a retreat this year in the spring which will cost something. Additionally, if students are accepted to All-State Orchestra, they can petition to use student account money to pay that fee. Next year, '08/09, some or all of the students may go on a 'big' trip - and again, they may use student account money.

3) Grades will be turned in to the administration no later than Monday Oct. 15. Since we've had no performance yet, the bulk of the grades this period will be determined by the few assignments we've had (Music Day or assignment/excuse, practice logs, playing tests, signature page turn in), Ms. Silberman's assessment of whether the student is working to improve their musicianship and skill, attitude and citizenship in class, and attendance (or excuse from) required sectionals.

4) Next week, on Tuesday, we have an opportunity to see the Oregon Symphony here in Salem (at Willamette University). This would be a *GREAT* concert to review. Students who show student ID get in for $5. Hope to see you there.

5) Did you know we have an orchestra concert on Tuesday, October 23 at 7pm?

CALL TIME FOR STUDENTS FOR THE CONCERT IS 5:45pm sharp! If you have a legitimate (very legitimate!) excuse for being late, MAKE SURE THAT MS. SILBERMAN KNOWS so that you don't get dinged points.

Students are to come completely dressed. If students have ANY QUESTIONS about what they need to wear, please direct those questions to Ms. Silberman or ask someone who's been here before. Students will not be allowed to perform if they do not have the correct attire. Flyers for the concert are available to students beginning next week.

6) If anyone still needs to purchase a metronome (well, students can use the online one), tuner, strings, bow, or stand, please touch base with Ms. Silberman. She's willing to purchase (through online merchants or Weathers) whatever you need... then you can reimburse her.

7) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. Tickets are $30 each, regardless of where you sit, and are otherwise available from Susan Tolley (lstolley7@msn.com), at Today's Hair, or at the front desk at school. Do you have an appealing item or service to donate? Contact Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.coml. The deadline for big-ticket oral auction items is November 2nd. The deadline for silent auction items is November 14th. Donation forms, more details, etc. are available - please ask. The theme for the evening is "007" and decorations will be casino-oriented. Thanks!

(Contributor: Vickie Tuttle & Kami Hettwer)
Adults -- Immediate Action: Our first competition at U of O is fast approaching and Kami Hettwer's Prop team is in desperate need of a few more able adults to travel to U of O very early to help assemble the Gear Bases that will be used at the first performance. We will need people to begin assembly at U of O beginning sometime between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. Please call Kami or Vickie for more.

Those who join the team or are already on the team need to get with Mrs. Hettwer to go over the schedule for the rehearsals/practice that need to take place BEFORE next week’s competition. This is a VERY IMPORTANT part of the show and you will add the necessary “show” behind the hard work of the musicians—they can’t complete the show without a few more volunteers. So please call Kami or email her immediately to let her know you can help! Kami can be reached directly at (503) 585-2529 or mkhett@aol.com.

Forward-looking at upcoming events on the 2007/2008 Calendar
(Contributor: Jesse Seeley)
Here’s a look at an excerpt from the “Calendar of Events” that was updated a few weeks back. Looking forward to our FIRST competition on October 6th, the dates/times are included below. Any issues with the SAT conflicts with the October 6th date should already have been discussed with the students. If for some reason this is not understood by any of the affected students, immediately contact Dr. Nail or Mr. Griffiths.

Excerpted from “FINAL DRAFT” PRELIMINARY WEST SALEM TITAN BAND 2007/08 CALENDAR
Dates are as accurate as possible at publication, but may change as new information is received

First Semester
9/28 Titan Band Home Football West 5:30 – 10
10/1 participants WIBC audition tapes must be turned in by 2:30
10/5 participants All-State audition tapes must be turned in by 2:30

Since there’s no home game that night, we’ll go longer (hopefully no later than 4:30). Afterwards, we must pack and stage everything for an early morning. Each section will be dismissed when the entire section is ready for the show Saturday. If done efficiently, we could be out as soon as possible, but exact time is not known.

Competition Day, October 6th: Plan on a Call time for next week’s competition day to be VERY EARLY on Saturday morning (Oct. 6). Exact call time To Be Announced.

Titan Auction—Coming November 17th!
(Contributor: Vickie Tuttle)
Mark your calendars to attend on November 17th. But the preparation for what we need to help the band begins NOW. We need an adult to step up to be a liaison/contact to attend the Auction meetings beginning next week (throughout October). Armed with all this important information, we would need that person to help coordinate with Tim Klarr for item pickup and auction intake.

Any or all band members, parents, or their families and friends can make contributions for items that will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going directly to West Salem High School and the Band! Some suggestions of past successful items to donate have been restaurant gift certificates, wine baskets, vacation/time-share week or weekend, Vacation in Hawaii, a trip to New York, and other useful big ticket items are always appreciated. Got extra frequent flyer miles that might expire before you can use them? Consider donating a couple of tickets to wherever that program/airline flies! This is the school’s BIGGEST fund raising event and we want to make sure we do our part. All donations will be appreciated!

The Deadline to submit our items is Nov. 2, 2007. For information please call Vickie Tuttle at 503-588-0968 if you have items to donate. Please contact Tim Klarr for information about meeting time and how to pick up Auction intake forms at todayshair@msn.com.

Editor’s Corner: Quote/thought for the week
(Contributor: Well, the “Editor” of this Newsletter J)
I hope you liked last week’s quote. If anyone would like to submit anything for possible inclusion to this newsletter (e.g., an “open letter” to the band, directors, teachers, etc) or a quote you just think everyone would enjoy, submit it directly to me with the subject “Editor’s Corner”. If it is a quote or other referenced material, please supply your source. That’s just a short introduction to this new feature. But here is the quote of the week, and some more words to live life by:
