Drumline—Mandatory Meeting June 1

Hey Guys and Gals...

We have finally scheduled a day to get the high school drumline set for the summer/fall.  The date is Monday June 1 from 3:30-5:30pm at the West Salem Band Room.  This time is mandatory for all those interested in playing in the battery in the fall.(snares, quads, and bass drum).  Pit players need not attend this session.  Sooooo, if you are GOING to be a 9th grader through a senior, and you want a shot at the battery you must be there!  This is the only session we are having, so please be ready to play.  I am pretty sure you all know the types of exercises and techniques we use so dust off the sticks and come to play.

See you on the 1st.

S-K bands will play for state titles

Most groups had to wait until Monday to get the final word
By Barbara CurtinStatesman Journal

Salem-Keizer schools will be hard to miss at the state music competitions in mid-May.
District string ensembles and symphony orchestras will account for nine of the 21 groups chosen to play at the Orchestra State Championships on May 15 at Oregon State University.

As with choirs and bands, most groups that qualified for state during district competitions had to wait until Monday for final word from the Oregon School Activities Association. Independent judges had to further narrow the finalists in some categories by listening to tapes.

These Salem-Keizer string orchestras will compete at Oregon State University on May 15: McKay, 8 a.m.; McNary, 8:50 a.m.; West Salem, 10:20 a.m.; Sprague, 1:45 p.m.; South Salem, 2:35 p.m.

These full symphony orchestras will compete that afternoon and evening: North Salem, 3:50 p.m.; Sprague, 4:25 p.m.; South Salem, 6:20 p.m.; and West Salem, 7:30 p.m.

These bands will compete in the Class 6A State Band Championships at OSU on May 16: McKay, 9 a.m.; McNary, 10:45 a.m.; Sprague, 2 p.m.; West Salem, 4:15 p.m; and South Salem, 6:45 p.m.

These Salem-Keizer high schools will compete in the Class 6A Choir State Championships on May 9 at George Fox University in Newberg: West Salem, 2:40 p.m.; North Salem, 3:40 p.m.; South Salem, 5 p.m.; McNary, 5:40 p.m.; and Sprague, 6 p.m.

Concert dress has been detailed in previous emails - please check the blog for more information: www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com

4) All Titan Orchestras will be playing on our final concert Monday June 2 at 7 p.m. Call time for that concert will be 6:15 p.m. We will acknowledge all graduating seniors as well as a few other orchestra awards. Please invite friends and family - it should be a very enjoyable concert!

5) There is no rehearsal this Friday for Advanced Symphony after school - have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

6) Many students owe money ($8, $25 or $40) for shirts and/or sweatshirts that they've already received. They know who they are. It would be nice if all the money was turned in by next Friday (May 30). Checks can be made out to WSHS Music Boosters.

Enjoy this crazy Oregon weather,

Pants - Tan, beige, khaki, olive, brown or white if you must
Shirts - Black - not too short of a sleeve, long sleeve ok - no white or faded black!
Shoes - brown or black (white ok if white pants)

Period ½ - Advanced Orchestra (with the elementary students) Thursday May 22, 7pm concert at West. Call time is 6:40 p.m. to tune. Dress is formal - women may wear prom formals (if they can play in them) or spring dresses (that aren't too revealing or too short - below the knee), men may wear all black, tuxes, or black suits. Bring pirate gear.

2) Parents of students in Periods 5, 6, 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphony Strings) — if you can help by transporting anywhere from 4 to 10 stands in your vehicle (van??) could you please contact Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us)? You would be asked to come pick up stands on Tuesday or Wednesday after school and bring them to the library at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 21st and to drop them back off at school on Thursday or Friday.

3) Sweatshirts were ordered for students last month and they look great (thank you to Lauren Culver's mom Kelly Culver!). They have a great embroidery that says “TITANS orchestra.” If you are interested in ordering a sweatshirt for family members, please have students bring an order form home and return money/form by Thursday May 22 (a form is attached to this email):

Cotton/Poly blend sweatshirts - black or grey $30 (this is an increase over student price... sorry). Ladies sizes (no band on the bottom) XS,S, M L, XL. Men's sizes (band on the bottom) XS, S, M, L, XL.

Nylon sporty sweatshirt - black or grey $40. Unisex sizes XS, S, M, L, XL.

4) State '08 was a success for the Titan orchestra program. For a recap of all the events and scores, and to see links to the great pictures the Statesman Journal took, please check the blog — www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com.

Huge thanks to all the parents who came to Corvallis to support the orchestra and symphony. Thanks to Ann McCloud (co-owner of the Red Door Salon 2665 Commercial St SE Salem, OR 97302 - (503) 371-6882) for doing hair for the advanced orchestra (you'll be able to see her work on the DVD!), Vicki Tyree for riding the bus on the way down, and Jenny Gates for helping with the flowers.

5) Reminder that all students need to turn in 2 reviews to Ms. Silberman by the Friday before finals - seniors will need to turn their reviews in by June 4. 1 review needs to be a 'live' review (hey, there are two concerts this week - and all students only play on one of them) and 1 can be of a DVD performance or CD review (or any other creative music listening situation). If students do not turn in their reviews, their grade will be negatively affected.

I look forward to seeing you this next week

If you don't plan to ride the bus both ways, Ms. Silberman must have a parent's permission. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING MONEY or FOOD FOR LUNCH/SNACK/DINNER. Students are officially excused from class at the time their bus leaves. They are expected to touch base with their teachers to pick up missed assignments.

Directions to the LaSells Student Center attached.

Check the blog this weekend for updates on scores. GOOD LUCK TO THE WIND ENSEMBLE ON SATURDAY!!

2) Wednesday, May 21st, the orchestras of periods 5,6, and 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, and Symphony Strings) will be performing at the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library at 7:00 p.m.

The dress will be professional casual: Black shirts (not too short of a sleeve), black closed toe shoes, and any of the following colored pants: beige, tan, khaki, cream, white, or brown. Suggestions for inexpensive purchase: TJ Maxx, Ross, Old Navy, Fred Meyer, Kohl's, or Target (and there's always Goodwill, too). This has been discussed at length in class - students are well aware that they need to wear something that looks nice.

3)Thursday, May 22nd, Advanced Orchestra, periods 1/2, will be performing for the parents
and students of the area's 4th and 5th grade classes at West's auditorium.

Students are welcome to wear their 'prom' formals to this concert - women may wear prom dresses, as long as they are appropriate, and they have to be able to actually play in them (for some cellists and upper string players, it may not work to have a tight or low plunged dress). If the prom dress is not going to work, any nice formal dress will do. Or women may wear their orchestra black. Men will wear their symphony tuxes.

4) The Salem Pops is playing at the Elsinore on Saturday May 10. For more information: www.salempopsorchestra.org - there are student tickets available at the door, as always.

5) Bass players - please arrange to stay after school on Wednesday, May 14th, 2:30 - 3:30, to work with Tyler Abbot - adjunct professor of classical and jazz bass at U of O.

6) All students who have received State tshirts or who have ordered sweatshirts, please remember to bring your money (if you're not using money from your student account) to Ms. Silberman this next week. Checks payable to WSHS Music Boosters.

7) We will be selling "Titan Music" water bottles. These are hard plastic (the non-outgassing type) with a screw top. THEY CANNOT GO IN THE DISHWASHER. They have a music quote on one side: You Are The Music While The Music Lasts ~T.S. Eliot. They will be available starting next week. $5 - payable to WSHS Music Boosters.

Orchestra News

1) The fantastic Band, Orchestra, and Choir High School All City concert is this Saturday -
7pm at North High School. Come hear the very best our district has to offer. The orchestra is under the baton of Louis Bergonzi - an inspirational and exciting conductor. Tickets are $7 at the door. This is an excellent review opportunity.

2) The Salem Chamber Orchestra presents their annual Family Concert this weekend -
2pm and 4pm, with an instrument petting zoo in between - at Hudson Hall, Willamette University, Sunday February 17. This concert features Tubby the Tuba (www.tubbythetuba.com), the Bach Double Violin Concerto, and the competition winners from Willamette University and the Salem Chamber Orchestra. If you have younger children at home, this is a fantastic concert to bring them to!!

3) Planning for next year has officially begun. All students have received what's called "Forecasting" information. Regarding the orchestra program, all students currently enrolled are welcome to re-enroll - they just have to get Ms. Silberman's signature on their Signature Page (the yellow sheet). Which orchestra they'll be in will be determined by recommendation and/or audition over the next few months.

There was an incorrect description in the bulletin of courses for the Advanced Orchestra course - here is the proper descriptor:

Advanced Orchestra

This course is the most advanced orchestra offering students intense training and performance experience. It is a year long double blocked course. Analytical skills, music theory and history are integrated into this class. Rehearsals and performances outside of regular class time will be required. Concurrent enrollment in Advanced Symphony Orchestra is expected. Rehearsals and performances outside of regular class time will be required.

Audition process see Ms. Silberman * room A101

Any questions about placement, auditions, or anything else? Please contact Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us)

Next year is a trip year - we're still not sure if all students will be eligible to go on the trip, but now that Ms. Silberman's about to have her first year under her belt, the next few years will be full of competitions, special guest artists, performances, and trips. All students will be able to use their student account money over the next year and beyond.

4) The April 9 concert (listed on the schedule page in your green Orchestra Handbook) has been canceled. The next newsletter will have information about an updated calendar.

5) Boot camp will happen again next year - 2 weeks prior to the start of school. It will be 3-4 days long, so please plan your schedules accordingly. This will be where students may re-audition for placement in next year's orchestras. It'll also be a great opportunity for students to reconnect with their instruments. This year's Boot Camp will feature a special guest artist - more info on that in the next few months.

6) The Young Musician's Mentoring Program kicks off this next Tuesday, the 19th, at 6:30pm
in the orchestra room, right after Advanced Symphony rehearsal. All participants are to attend this mandatory meeting - it'll be over by 7pm.

Orchestra News

1) Videos on a new blog!!  Ms. Silberman is putting all the ensemble performances up on a new Website:  www.titanorchestrasvideo.blogspot.com. ("Orchestra News" issues, interesting additional information, pictures, links and updates from Ms. Silberman still at www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com).

All students in the West orchestra program performed in an ensemble for the semester 1 final. Videos of those performances will all be up on the new blog site by the end of the weekend (currently, there are 6 groups up, more being loaded up every day). Please ask the student what the name of their piece is - Ms. Silberman will not post the names of the students on the blog for privacy sake.

Chamber music is, in Ms. Silberman's opinion, the very best reason for playing a stringed instrument. Solo performance and orchestral participation are fantastic too, but playing with one, two, three or more other people with one person per part can be so wonderful and rewarding. Students in the orchestra program will have the opportunity to play in ensembles each January, and more often in some circumstances. Hope that you enjoy watching the performances.

2) Great review option and 'support your fellow musicians' opportunity -the Salem Youth Symphony is performing this Saturday at 7pm at Corban. Here's the info off the Web site (www.salemyouthsymphony.org).

Musical Enchantment "An Evening at the Movies"  Saturday, February 2, 2008   7:00 p.m. Corban College-Psalm Center.  Featuring Salem Youth Orchestra and soloists from Amadeus and Philharmonia Orchestras. Special Guest Trio Oregon, Dan Rouslin, violin, Hekun Wu, cello and Elise Yun, piano
Tickets available by calling 503-485-2244

3) Scholarship opportunity
The Salem Pops Orchestra has announced their 2008 scholarship program. They say that these scholarships "have been created by musicians FOR musicians, to spread the love of music and the concept of life-long learning." Scholarship are for Seniors who plan to study music and for Sophomores/Juniors who will attend a music camp this summer. Financial need is not required or considered. Applicants must complete an application, write a 300 word personal statement, and get the recommendation from both a teacher and another adult familiar with the student's music involvement.

The Educational Scholarship - for Seniors: The scholarship is $1000 to students who wish to continue further musical study, although not necessarily as a music major, at an accredited college or university.

The Music Camp Scholarship - for Juniors and Sophomores: The scholarship is $500 (one-half the cost of camp up to maximum of $500)  towards tuition at any music camp acceptable to the Pops Scholarship Committee.

For more information and an application, please contact Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us) or for more information: www.salempopsorchestra.org.

Orchestra News

1) End of semester grades have been posted. Ms. Silberman will be touching base with each student to discuss 1st semester successes and to 'game plan' a focus for each student for 2nd semester. Any parents interested in that information is welcome to e-mail or call Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us).

2) Not too early to work on the two reviews due by the end of second semester. The Oregon Symphony Association in Salem contacted Ms. Silberman to remind us of upcoming concerts, including this next Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. Here's an excerpt from the e-mail they sent:

"Tickets are available at: (503) 364-0149 or 1-800-992-8499. Classical ticket prices range between $25 and $43 while Pops tickets run from $24 to $54. Student tickets are available at the box office for $5 the night of the concert to any student with ID. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. at Smith Auditorium. This season's remaining concerts, which are all on Tuesday evenings, are listed below. All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium on the Willamette University campus.

Jan. 29: "Legends of Swing" featuring arrangements of songs by Nelson Riddle for some of the greatest singers of the 40s and 50s (Pop)
Feb. 5: Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2, Kirill Gerstein, piano, Gregory Vajda, conductor*
Feb.y 19: Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2, Arnaldo Cohen, piano, Carlos Kalmar, conductor*
April 15: Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Sharon Kam, clarinet, Gregory Vajda, conductor**
April 22: "A Sentimental Journey" featuring Norman Leyden and the Oregon Symphony Orchestra (Pops)"

3) We have launched YMMP - Young Musician's Mentoring Program. Mr. Shippy and Ms. Cline
have polled their students and we have about 20 young students in middle or elementary school who would like coaching by high school students. The Titan orchestra student's commitment is to coach the young musician 4 times - once or twice a month could do it - either at school or at a house, and upon completion of the 4th coaching, the high school student will be paid $20. Also, all high school students will receive a good amount of extra credit from Ms. Silberman for successfully participating in this program. This is one of the ways we can assure that we have a thriving program here at West. Please touch base with Ms. Silberman if you're interested in participating.

4) Thanks to all for a great first semester! Second semester we have many exciting things to look forward to - newly configured period 5 and 6 classes, a 'solo' playing improvement unit, advanced orchestra classical composer and contemporary player projects, district and (hopefully) state competitions for advanced orchestra and symphony, a concert at West with the middle school orchestra too, a concert at West with the 4th and 5th grade orchestras too, and we will begin planning the big trip for next year ('08/'09).

2) All students are expected to turn in 2 reviews each semester. At current count, about half of the students have turned in their reviews. If you need review ideas or have any questions, please contact Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us)

One student has turned in a review of a concert that might be of interest to other students: famous rock guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen performing the Concerto Suite for guitar and orchestra. The concert is available as a CD or DVD on iTunes and any other music acquiring source

3) There is a concerto competition for the Salem Youth Symphony this Saturday Jan. 19, 4:00 pm at the Salem First United Methodist Church downtown. About ten Salem-Keizer high school students will perform concerto excerpts. This is a good review opportunity.

4) All students are expected to attend their orchestra class, including Advanced Symphony (Thursday Jan. 24, 11:15 - 12:45), to perform their final. Students grade on their final is a combination of their preparedness, their use of time these past few weeks preparing with their group, and their group's performance on the day of their final.

5) www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com Just a reminder that Ms. Silberman posts interesting information and links on the blog - please check often.

Orchestra News

1) All City auditions are on Jan 10 - all students have been given their 30 minute audition time slot. Please consult the original audition submission sheet for all pertinent information or direct questions to Ms. Silberman. Mrs. Hughes will be coaching upper strings Friday and next Monday, and Ms. Silberman will offer as much time as she can to those auditioning.

2) All orchestra students know they have 2 reviews due by the end of the semester. One review must be of a live concert, one of a recorded DVD, online video, taped TV show, or CD. Here are a few ideas for those who have yet to finish their reviews:
a) Students who did not play in Advanced Symphony may review the West Salem Dec. 12 winter concert
b) There is a lovely online 1 hour long concert that students may view and review: http://www.medici-arts.tv/lpo.html
c) There is an online concert video website that has a ton of bands on it - if students know any of the bands that might have a string player in it, they'd be welcome to review one of the concerts: http://www.fabchannel.com
d) NPR has a live concert audio site that one can find many concerts on to listen to and review, including Joshua Bell performing Saints-Seans violin sonata: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10210144
e) Ms. Silberman has contemporary and classical CDs that might be of interest to students. She also has a few DVDs that can be review - they can be checked out for 2 days at a time.
f) Students can attend a concert before the end of the semester - There is a Camerata Musica concert Jan 13 and a concerto competition at 3pm on Jan 19... see your Salem Arts Assoc. calendar for more info.
g) Any other creative review ideas will most likely be accepted (like seeing Ron Kilde perform at the Wine festival or at Cascade bakery, for example), so come up with something.

3) The Friends of Music has a very important meeting at McKay this next Monday at 6:30 p.m. Superintendent Sandy Husk and principals from all 6 high schools will be on site to discuss the shape of the music program in the face of small learning communities.

Alan Bushong of CCTV and Friends of Music will moderate the discussion. His e-mail also said:
"Please park in the South lot - a right turn for those entering McKay on Wolverine off Lancaster.
Enter the school through the southeast door directly available from the south parking lot.

"We'll meet in the Choir Room. It is similar in size to the South Salem Choir Room that seated over 100 at the meeting about Small Learning Communities in 2006.

"All are invited. This is our opportunity to help the administration with scheduling and communications issues.

"We want to make sure that students can enroll in music classes and that teachers have adequate time with students.

"It would be fantastic to have a strong parent showing - come help influence the future of the music program in the Salem-Keizer school district."

4) Here is the link to the Encore Photography pictures taken at the December concerts. Please take a look and consider ordering a picture. The order deadline has been extended to January 22nd since there was a delay in getting the link information.

5) Ms. Silberman will be playing the anthem at the 3 pm varsity boys basketball game Jan. 18... come support our Titan team! Any students interested in playing the anthem are welcome to play for Ms. Silberman to either prepare to play live at a game or to record their anthem that will then be played before a game.

6) All orchestra students will be partaking in a 3 week small ensemble unit - the final for orchestra student's classes will to be to perform for classmates during our finals time. In Ms. Silberman's opinion, ensemble playing, also called 'chamber music', is the absolute best part of playing a stringed instrument - though playing in a symphony either recreational or professionally is wonderful, the opportunity to get together with 1 - 4 other string players may be the most rewarding and easiest way of continuing playing for the rest of one's life. In fact, there is a large growth in the number of chamber music camps for recreational string players - mainly full of adults who played once as a young person, maybe they stopped playing for years, but who are interested in reconnecting with their instrument. Ms. Silberman will video tape all the performances - if students request a copy, one will most likely be able to be made for them.

Happy New Year!

Orchestra News

1) This weekend there are 2 really great concert-going opportunities - the Portland Youth Philharmonic has their concert Saturday Nov. 10 and the Salem Pops has their Friday Nov. 9. For ticket prices and more information www.salempopsorchestra.org and www.portlandyouthphil.org. Remember to show your West Salem student ID at Salem area concerts to receive student pricing.

2) The 9th annual Cremona exhibit, an exhibit of beautifully handcrafted violins, violas and cellos from Cremona, Italy, will be coming to Portland this next weekend. David Kerr Violin Shop(www.kerrviolins.com/event.html) is hosting this incredible exhibit. There is an opening afternoon reception - for more information, please navigate to the Web site. This is a traveling exhibit - the instruments are available for viewing (playing) and acquisition (they're mostly advanced-professional quality instruments) - that I used to go to annually in Los Angeles. Even if you're not in the market for a many-thousand-dollar instrument, it's wonderful to visit the shop and see/play these instruments.

3) Salem's All-City orchestra applications are due Tuesday Nov. 13 - the application needs student and parent signature and must be accompanied by a $7 check made out to Salem-Keizer Public Schools. If you don't know whether or not your child has the application materials, please feel free to contact me (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us). This year's All-City conductor is internationally respected music educator professor Louis Bergonzi - and dynamic conductor and fantastically interesting educator.

4) Thank you to all the parents who have come to parent conferences and who attended the Parent Meeting this past Tuesday.

5) Congratulations to the students accepted to the 2008 Oregon All-State Orchestra:

Gwen Gates, Violin
Robin Kim, Violin
Taylor Baldwin, Bass
Tyler King, Bass

Honorable mention goes to Kayla Fedenrecht for a great effort getting her audition materials together. Auditioning for All-State or All-Northwest is a tough process that takes lots of practice time and determination. Students accepted to play All-State will play at the Oregon Music Educators Association conference in Eugune next January. It is very exciting to have West Salem High so well represented.

6) Just a quickie reminder that though students have 5 days off, they are still expected to practice some - periods 5, 6, and 7 will need to turn in completed practice logs on the first day back next week, and period 1
is learning a wonderful piece of music with solo parts - auditions will be held in 2 weeks to see who will perform the solos at the Dec. 12 concert.
