Most groups had to wait until Monday to get the final word
By Barbara CurtinStatesman Journal
Salem-Keizer schools will be hard to miss at the state music competitions in mid-May.
District string ensembles and symphony orchestras will account for nine of the 21 groups chosen to play at the Orchestra State Championships on May 15 at Oregon State University.
As with choirs and bands, most groups that qualified for state during district competitions had to wait until Monday for final word from the Oregon School Activities Association. Independent judges had to further narrow the finalists in some categories by listening to tapes.
These Salem-Keizer string orchestras will compete at Oregon State University on May 15: McKay, 8 a.m.; McNary, 8:50 a.m.; West Salem, 10:20 a.m.; Sprague, 1:45 p.m.; South Salem, 2:35 p.m.
These full symphony orchestras will compete that afternoon and evening: North Salem, 3:50 p.m.; Sprague, 4:25 p.m.; South Salem, 6:20 p.m.; and West Salem, 7:30 p.m.
These bands will compete in the Class 6A State Band Championships at OSU on May 16: McKay, 9 a.m.; McNary, 10:45 a.m.; Sprague, 2 p.m.; West Salem, 4:15 p.m; and South Salem, 6:45 p.m.
These Salem-Keizer high schools will compete in the Class 6A Choir State Championships on May 9 at George Fox University in Newberg: West Salem, 2:40 p.m.; North Salem, 3:40 p.m.; South Salem, 5 p.m.; McNary, 5:40 p.m.; and Sprague, 6 p.m.

Choir News
Dear friends:
For the past six years, I have had the honor of being the choir director at West. It is a job I have loved and enjoyed immensely. However, i have decided to follow a new path in my career and will no longer be teaching choir.
In my new position, I will be the Behavior Resource Specialist at West. I will be working with students on how to be more successful in their school experience.
This was not an easy decision to make and one that I spent many hours thinking about. I know that Mr. John is committed to finding an excellent choir director to continue the traditions we have built.
Best wishes,
Mrs. McIntyre
Dear Choir Students and Parents:
I wish Mrs. McIntyre the best in her new assignment. I appreciate the outstanding job she did for us and I am proud of the accomplishments the choir program has made.
After a national search of qualified applicants and interviewing five top-notch choir directors, we have hired Mr. Jesse Angelo. Mr. Angelo graduated with highest honors in vocal music education and choir directing from Luther College in Iowa. His latest teaching assignment was LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts in New York. We are delighted to have Mr. Angelo as our new choir director. I think he is the perfect match for our school.
We will set up a time later in August for choir students and parents to meet Mr. Angelo.
Sincerely,
Ed John
Principal

Choir News
Many thanks to all of you for attending and supporting our concert last night! I was very proud of the students and delighted with where we are for October!
If you're wondering why some of the Titan Choir and Chorale students were switching robes, it is because we do not have enough correctly sized robes. We have many that are too short or too long. We are working on resolving the issue so as not to add stress before the concert! Many thanks to Aaron Hukari, Concert Choir senior, for his many hours of work on getting robes organized and checked out.
UPCOMING CONCERTS:
Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. is the Elementary Honor Choir concert. Chorale and Concert Choir will sing on this concert along with Walker and the Elementary Honor Choir.
Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. - Concert Choir will be performing at Capitol Manor. This date was given to students in early September, but is not in the course guide calendar.
Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. - Holiday Concert
Thursday, December 13 at 12:00 noon - Capitol Rotunda
WREATH/POINSETTIA SALE:
This sale is going on right now. If you traditionally purchase greens or poinsettias for the holidays, please consider purchasing through us. Ask your student to pick up a packet in the choir room. Forms are also available on the Music Booster Web site.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS:
This sale ends next Thursday, November 1.
Thank you again for your support of West Salem Choirs!

Music Day sign-ups
Hello all,
We really need folks to sign up for Music Day! In four hours time we can make much of the money we need for the extra things like clinicians for all of the choirs, accompanists, trips, etc. Please consider giving a few hours of your Saturday to help with this important event!
Parents: please e-mail Marianne Stipe at mstipe@willamette.edu if you are able to drive.
Students: We will do sign-ups during the first week of school.
Many thanks,
Lisa

Choir
Happy August! What a treat to see so many of you at registration - I'm looking forward to getting back to work with all of you.
MUSIC DAY:
Support Music Day is Saturday, September 8. This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year and only takes a few hours of time on one day! Please consider getting involved as we are needing to raise monies for some great activities and things for this year!
Students wearing concert dress go throughout West Salem collecting donations. The money is combined and redistributed to each program based on participation. Participation is not required, but is strongly encouraged. The more students and helping parents Choir sends, the larger its share of the profits. (And, it's fun!)
Students will sign up the first week of class, but Music Day organizers would like to get parent volunteers signed up sooner. Any parent willing to drive students that day can contact Marianne Stipe directly. Drivers need to check in at 8:00 and meet while the kids are getting into their concert dress. The kids are out from 9:00 to noon or 1:00. There are designated "respite houses" for water and bathroom breaks. Please give Marianne your name, "Choir," contact information and number of seat belts. Also contact Marianne if you can't drive, but are willing to help another way. She is need of a couple more respite homes.
U of O GAME: September 1
Contact the Barnicks if you want to work this game. The exact start time isn't available yet, but will probably be about 8:00 a.m. for a 12:30 game. Students, and family and friends who work on their behalf, must be at least 16 years old. There are about 20 to 25 slots to fill for this game. This is a great way to earn money for your individual student music account. I would strongly encourage sophomores and juniors to get involved!!
Thank you!

Zach Harle memorial services
Dear friends,
It is with a very heavy heart that I need to let you know about the loss of Zach Harle, a West Salem choir member.
Services for Zach will be held this Saturday, Aug. 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Salem First Church of the Nazarene.
Zach was a member of Titan Choir and Rhythm Express last year and was a very valuable member of choir. He was an excellent singer and a quiet leader and will be sorely missed by all of us in the choirs at West Salem. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Car wash location and more volunteers needed!
Happy summer all!
First of all, we have a carwash scheduled for this coming Saturday, July 21, 10-2. We need people to wash cars, hold signs and have a good time!
We also need at least two parents to supervise. One can do the first half and one do the second half? Money earned will go to individual student accounts.
Please email me back and let me know if you're able to work at this event and what hours. You must work at least two hours to receive credit. No bikinis, just smiles and great West Salem attitudes!
