Music Day Results and Thank You

Thanks to a BUNCH of people who contributed to this year's Music Day event on Sept. 6. Again this was a big success! The students did another outstanding job in getting the word out there and for their participation in the All City band event held the few days prior and for the follow-up on Saturday morning. To date the total raised thus far has been approximately $19,000-and there are still some outstanding pledges and we still have parents returning the mountain of cans we received as well. But without the organizers, callers, drivers, and other roles that go into an event of this nature, it all doesn't come together. Below is a list (hopefully complete) of the volunteers that also contributed to the overall effort. We'd like to especially thank them for their extra time and commitment to the WSHS Music programs.

Possible Salem, northwest region, even U.S. high school history in the making? If it has been previously accomplished, chances are it was by a certified high school student, but this picture of the week highlights the accomplishments of a Walker Middle School student (Rosie Gottsch)-possibly the first female quad player in at least her category of youngest female to play quads in an Oregon high school marching band.

Titan Auction-Coming Soon!

This year's Titan Auction and Dinner, “Evening of Elegance,” is Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. It is shaping up to be a wonderful evening of FUN. Tickets are $30 per person or $240 for a table of 8. The more full tables we sell the more proceeds we (Band Boosters) receive from the auction. So let's get those tables filled up. Tickets are already selling like hotcakes - there are only 216 left, which is half of what was originally available for the entire evening. Let me know as soon as you decide you want one, two, three or a whole table. Get with your friends and go together on a table. Remember the more full Band Booster tables we put together the more we Band Boosters will receive from the event auction.

With that said, we are also in need of donations big and small. We receive a percentage of each of the items we have donated. We have donation forms so please contact me if you would like to make a donation or have received a donation to go towards the auction. Remember, donations are tax deductible.

We are also in need of a few volunteers to help set up the auction tables the morning of the event, at 8 a.m. This should be band students as well as parents. We need about three students and 1-2 parents. Please let Scotti know if you can help.

Uniform Update: All Band Members Must Have Black Socks!

Please remember to bring black socks when dressing in uniform. No ankle-length or quarter socks. They must cover your ankles completely. Pick up a bag of inexpensive black cotton socks from Target, Fred Meyers, Wal Mart... You will need to have 2-3 on hand at competitions. There is nothing worse then spending an entire day marching in wet socks. We also need to have some in stock at school to help out those who do forget theirs, so if some of you could donate a bag that would be great. Concession Help Needed--$$$ Opportunity for Students

Hi Titan Band Students and Family -- We have our first opportunity for raising funds for your student account coming up this Thursday, September 4th. Please let me know ASAP if you can work concessions for the Freshman Football game. We still need 1 student and 1 adult worker. Arrival time at the concessions stand is 4:30 pm. Each person earns $10-$12 per hour to go toward your “\student account. You shift ends after the game and the concessions have been cleaned up for the night. This is a fun way to earn funds for student accounts. I am in charge of filling these slots so please let me know as soon as you can if you will be able to work. “Band Day”—September 6th

Music Day 2008 is this Saturday, September 6th. Call time is 8:00 and we should be finished about 1:00 or so. Students will need to check in and dress in uniforms right away upon completion of the day. Drivers and other volunteers should be getting a reminder call this week, but we will see you at 8:00 as well. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it is important for everyone to be there. Thanks to all of you who have signed up for teams and for volunteering. POST-BAND CAMP REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
As most of the students know, the upcoming week will have rehearsals from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on both Monday, 8/25/08 and Wednesday, 8/27/08

HOLIDAY WEEK REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
The normal Monday rehearsal is off for the Labor Day holiday (Monday September 1st, 2008) but will resume instead on Tuesday, September 2nd, again from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.† The exact time for Wednesday's rehearsal is still being worked out with the football field scheduling, so that is still TBA.

FOOTBALL GAME HALFTIME PERFORMANCE
Friday September 5 is the first home game, and there is a half time performance scheduled.† The students will learn more of the call times, et cetera later this week.

MUSIC DAY, SATURDAY, September 6
More information to come on this later in the newsletter as we approach Thursday, but especially for the "new kids on the block". . . this is a very important and fun day and is one of the largest fund raisers of the year.† So please plan to attend to put in a few hours for this great cause. Again, more information as that becomes available.

Orchestra News

Hi, WSHS Orchestra Parents and Students!

Music Day was a huge success - thanks to all the parents and students who participated! The money figures haven't been announced to us yet; we'll pass them on when they are. This year orchestra students had their highest percentage of participation yet!

Students and parents: please read all the way to the end of this e-mail for important information and dates.

Calling all parents/guardians
Please mark Monday evening, September 24, 7:00 p.m., Orchestra Room, on your calendar to attend an important parent meeting. Ms. Silberman and representative students from the orchestras will briefly perform. You'll receive information about the upcoming year, including volunteer opportunities and expectations. There will also be open time for your questions. Please attend. Successful music programs don't happen without strong parent support. Thank you!

Orchestra concession dates

• Friday, September 21, arrive 3:00 p.m., Girls' soccer. Needed: 1 adult, 2 students
  
• Friday, September 28, arrive 5:00 p.m., Varsity football. Needed: 3 adults, 3 students
  
• Thursday, October 11, arrive 2:30 p.m., Boys' soccer. Needed: 1 adult, 2 students.
  

Students in Band, Choir and Orchestra have several opportunities to work concessions at home games. Supervising adults are also needed. The students and adults earn $12/hour for their individual student's account, which can be used to pay for trip or activity expenses. This and all money earned for individual student accounts through activities like entertainment book, wreath, and poinsettia sales, can be carried over until graduation.

Workers need to arrive on time and stay as long as needed. Someone from Athletics is there to orient/train workers. Please sign up in the Orchestra room if interested.

Handbooks
The Titan Orchestras student and parent handbook will be ready soon. Students will receive them in class and need to bring back signed paperwork contained within the handbook.

After-school symphony
Advanced Symphony Orchestra (period 10) sign-ups are currently ongoing. It meets Tuesdays 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., and after school on Fridays until 4:15 p.m. It is co-directed by Mr. Nail and Ms. Silberman, and is a wonderful full symphony experience.

(To accommodate the schedule of the Salem Youth Symphony participants, our Titan Advanced Symphony Orchestra Tuesday evening rehearsals have been changed to 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. until November. At that point, Symphony will move back to 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.)

Here is the Symphony enrollment policy:
All Advanced Orchestra (per 01, 02) students will be required to play in Symphony.
All Symphony Strings (per 07) and Orchestra (per 06) students are strongly encouraged to join Symphony. We want a strong group again this year.
Students in String Ensemble (per 05) need to audition with Ms. Silberman in order to enroll in Symphony.

A note re. schedule conflicts: Students who are also in Marching Band or sports should enroll in period 10 Symphony, but they need to provide Ms. Silberman with a very accurate calendar of when they will and will not attend Symphony rehearsals.

Students band together
Local youths solicit donations to fund music programs

Mike Spink was taken aback for a moment as he answered the door of his home on Ptarmigan Street NW in West Salem.
"Oh, my. They're dressed up," he said as he saw Lynn Robinson and KC Urbani wearing green and black marching band uniforms. "How can I help you?"

That was the cue for the two West Salem High School seniors to launch their appeal. The 17-year-olds explained that it was Music Day, and they were seeking donations to support their school's program.

Students from every high school in the Salem-Keizer district hit the pavement Saturday to raise money for their band and music programs. Each school organizes its own Band Day or Music Day, sending students out into their respective areas, knocking on doors.

At South and West high schools, the entire music department participated. At the other four high schools, only the bands were involved.

"It's fun," said Zach Chong, a West Salem High School drum major. "We get to see a lot of people we know. It's nice to see all of the support from the community."

In northeast Salem, McKay High School seniors David Meeker and Kevyn Smoot canvassed the area around Greentree Drive NE. The 17-year-olds, who wore green and blue plaid kilts, got shot down many times but didn't get discouraged. When residents weren't home, they left fliers in the doors that asked for mail-in contributions.

"You know you're making money to have a band program, and the program's fun, so it's worth it," said Smoot, who plays the baritone.

For most, if not all, of the high schools, this effort is the largest fundraiser of the year for the music program. The donations cover everything from transportation costs for marching bands and equipment to uniform replacements.

At McKay, much of the money -- the goal this year was to raise $6,500 -- will be used to hire additional instructors for the marching band.

"Without Band Day, we could not be a competitive marching band program," said Mike Sim, president of McKay Band Boosters.

At West Salem, the donations will be divided among the choir, band and orchestra programs. Last year, the school raised about $20,000.

"It allows the music program to expand from just an ordinary, in-school program to a really excellent program that has a lot of opportunities for musical and emotional growth," said West Salem High band director Ike Nail.

West students not only went door to door but manned the entrances of Roth's and Safeway to solicit donations from customers.

"They're learning the real responsibility of being part of a community," said parent volunteer Cecilia Urbani, who drove students around. "The high school is not just an entity by itself, it's part of the whole community."

Back on Ptarmigan Street NW near West Salem High, Spink gladly gave Robinson and Urbani a donation after they explained Music Day.

"Good luck," Spink said as the two went on their way. "I enjoy listening to you guys every night. I can hear you guys practice."

Friday Night Football Game Performance Info
(From flier sent home with students)
Game schedule for Friday afternoon practice/rehearsal and game “call times” are below. This should have been sent home with the students at Wednesday evening’s practice.

After-school Practice:
2:40 PM Winds, Battery, Guard—on grass for visual rehearsal (Need battery equipment and opener flag). Pit: warm up / rehearse with CLICK TRACK on ramp.
3:15 PM Pit: stage everything in hall on carts, ready to roll
Note: Rehearsal “ends when it ends”—typically that’s around 3:45 PM
5:30 PM Call Time—Change into uniform; Pit—move into stadium, stage for show. Change after.
5:50 PM Wind warm-up in Band Room; Battery warm-up on stage
6:25 PM Move to stadium/stands, get set
6:40 PM Get set on track for pre-game
7:00 PM Game starts

The marching band will perform at halftime. Afterwards, we change out of uniform and return to the stands for the 4th quarter. After the game, we will clean up and formally dismiss.

Remember:
1) Use of any controlled substance is, as always, absolutely prohibited.
2) Sexual impropriety of any kind will not be tolerated.
3) Any willful destruction of any property prohibited.
4) Students must comply with instructions from staff or chaperones at all times!

Band Shoes—Attention to Some Details

Shoes - For those of you who have not had a chance to pick up your new Marching shoes, they are in the dressing room and will be there for Friday Night’s Performance (7th September). We have had some students come in to find that theirs do not fit. If this happens, we will be able to reorder your correct size, BUT we will need to have ample time to do so. If you have not tried yours on, please keep this in mind when choosing what shoes you wear to the school on Friday. In other words, if you have NOT tried yours on, you should consider bringing a “backup” pair of black shoes, because you may be wearing them to march in that night. If you have a chance after school Friday, please stop in and pick yours up. The boxes are marked with your names. Thanks!

Missing Show Shirt - Whoever may have accidentally picked up a size medium Green Machine Show shirt from the band room following Friday night’s performance (last day of Band Camp). Please drop it off to Mr. G's office. No questions asked. The member who lost it needs it. Thanks!

Titan Marching Band Prop Personnel

This is a personal invitation for siblings of Titan band and colorguard students to be part of an exciting marching band program here at West! We have 16 gears on stands that need to be hauled out to the field, spun at designated times and hauled off the field during each competition and football game. These siblings must be strong enough to haul the gear by themselves. We can pre-arrange to have a gear and stand set up so that siblings can give them a “test drive” before making a commitment. Listed below are the dates and requirements. Please look them over and let us know if there are siblings who would like to take part in the exciting “Green Machine” marching band show. We would like to offer this opportunity to siblings before reaching out to the high school and middle school community. Contact Kami Hettwer if you would like to “test drive” a gear or if you have further questions.

Performance Dates:
September 14 – Home football game
September 28 – Home football game
October 6 – U of O Festival of Bands, all day
October 11 – Home football game
October 19 – Home football game
October 20 – PCI at Willamette, all day
October 27 – McKenzie Classic at Evergreen HS in Vancouver, all day
November 3 – Circuit Championships at OSU, all day

Note: if we have more than enough siblings interested we can split the performance dates up so one person does not have to be at all performances.

Rehearsals:
Rehearsal times will be kept at a minimum. We will schedule short rehearsals once a week during the full marching band rehearsal times. Exact times TBD.

Performance Attire: All black clothing.

Requirements: Siblings must be strong enough to haul the gear on and off the field on their own. Again, we can pre-arrange to have a gear and stand set up so that siblings can give them a “test drive” before making a commitment.

The Few, The Proud, The WSHS Band Members? Here’s an opportunity of a Lifetime!

Dr. Nail forwarded some EXCITING news and a truly once-in-a-lifetime chance for students to audition for an appearance with the most prestigious musical groups in the world—“The President’s Own,” also known as the “United States Marine Band.” With talent pulled from institutions such as the Boston Philharmonic, “Pops,” and many other world famous symphonies and graduates from some of the finest musical schools in the world, this is the orchestra that plays at all of the U.S. President’s events when called. This is a TREMENDOUS opportunity for YOU, a student in the WSHS music program to get a chance to win not only a cash award, but paid trips to Washington, D.C., and who knows, a chance to play in front of, even meet, one of the U.S. Presidents! PSAT for 2007—Important to Many Band Members

This year's PSAT is Saturday, October 20 at 8:00 a.m. Students will need to register with the bookkeeper by October 17. The cost is $20. Students will receive a prep booklet at the time of registration. Typically only sophomores and juniors take the PSAT but every once in a while I'll have an eager freshman wanting to take it. I would prefer that you only encourage sophomores and especially juniors to take the test (no seniors!). Please see the attached flyer for more detailed information and to post in your room.

Proctors NEEDED: I will need six proctors this year for the PSAT. All proctors are paid $50. Please have your people call my people if you can help.

Every year we have a scheduling conflict with our band students. Students in the band competition can take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 17 at one of the following schools:
* North
* McKay
* Blanchet

Students will need to register at the school where they will be testing.

Due to the MASSIVE amounts of copies and print outs made in the music department, ANY family who can send a ream of printer paper to school any time during the remainder of this school year will be helping out the band a BUNCH! Just have the students drop them off at the music directors’ office any time. Thank you in advance for helping where you can!

Important Message from Dr. Nail
Just a reminder that this is the time of the year to set up your private lessons for students who want them. Also coming due are the WIBC and All-State audition tapes. Due starting October 1! Don’t delay as this date will be here before you know it! Finally, we’ve attached a finalized draft of this year’s full calendar of events. Most dates have stayed the same from the previous document you had during band camp, but this one supersedes it, so please dispose of the other one so as to not confuse the two. There are still some “TBD” dates, but the competition dates for Marching Band are fairly solid. We will publish portions of this document in this newsletter for near future events and update the entire document from time-to-time, so please be on the lookout for updates.

Reminder: U of O “Security Detail” Fundraiser (“encore performance” from Newsletter #2)

The first opportunity for the “Security Detail” fundraiser is fast approaching with the first opportunity occurring Sept. 1, 2007. The exact start times have not been finalized, but is tentatively set for approximately 8:00 a.m. (for a 12:30 p.m. game). Students, family, and friends who work on this detail must be at least 16 years old. Prior to the posting of this in today’s newsletter, there were approximately 20-25 slots remaining to fill for this first game. This is a great way to earn money for your individual student music account. It is strongly encouraged that sophomores and juniors get involved! Hi WSHS Parents and Students!

One final email before school starts, because we have some IMPORTANT dates to share with you. Please read all the way to the end of the email for some information to pass on to students

1) WSHS annual Music Day is coming up - Saturday September 8
MS.SILBERMAN IS REQUIRING ALL STUDENTS TO ATTEND THIS VERY IMPORTANT FUNDRAISER. All students must be dressed in concert blacks and report to school Sept. 8 at about 8:30 a.m. to support the music program at West. Only a very valid excuse will be accepted - Ms. Silberman will give more information - including the exact report time - to students on the first day of class.

WE NEED MORE PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO DRIVE. Why not fulfill some of your parent volunteer hours at the beginning of the year, get it out of the way? If you are able to drive, contact Marianne Stipe directly. Give her your name, your student's name, and number of passenger seat belts. Drivers will need to report at 8:00 or 8:30 to receive routes, instructions, fill out insurance information, etc. while students are in the auditorium getting door-approach instructions.

2) Calling all parents/guardians
Please mark Monday evening, September 24, 7 p.m., Orchestra room, on your calendar to attend an important parent meeting. Ms. Silberman and students from select orchestras will briefly perform, and you will receive information about the upcoming year. (Including volunteer opportunities and expectations) YOUR ATTENDANCE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE TITAN ORCHESTRAS THIS YEAR.

3) Orchestra concession dates
• Friday, September 21, arrive 3:00 p.m., Girls' soccer. Needed: 1 adult, 2 students
• Friday, September 28, arrive 5:00 p.m., Varsity football. Needed: 3 adults, 3 students
• Thursday, October 11, arrive 2:30 p.m., Boys' soccer. Needed: 1 adult, 2 students
Students (and adults on behalf of their students) earn $12.00/hour for their individual student accounts working concessions at home games. Workers need to arrive on time and stay as long as needed. Someone from Athletics is there to orient/train workers. Please sign up in the Orchestra room if interested!

4) General announcements
The Titan Orchestras Parent and Student handbook will be ready by the end of the first week of school - students will receive handbooks and will need to bring back signed paperwork contained within the handbook.

Advanced Symphony Orchestra (period 10) signups are currently ongoing.
Here is the Symphony enrollment policy:

- All Advanced Orchestra (per 01, 02) students will be required to play symphony.
- All Symphony Strings (per 07) and Orchestra (per 06) are strongly encouraged to join symphony - we want a strong symphony again this year!
- Students in String Ensemble (per 05) need to audition with Ms. Silberman in order to enroll in Symphony.

Hello all,

We really need folks to sign up for Music Day! In four hours time we can make much of the money we need for the extra things like clinicians for all of the choirs, accompanists, trips, etc. Please consider giving a few hours of your Saturday to help with this important event!

Band Newsletter #2

Request for Supplies for Props!

We have an urgent need for folks to donate 2x4s for construction of the Marching Band props. The material has to be stronger than earlier anticipated. They need to be structurally sound and at least 6 ft long, but they don’t have to be “pretty” or new as we will be painting them all the same color. We are calling out for at least 35 2x4s, each at least 6 feet. So if you can find some or someone to contribute, please contact Kami or Vickie (e-mail & phone contact at end of newsletter)

Revised Potluck Plans for Parent Night on August 24th - Please read carefully:

Parent Night BBQ has been changed and will now be a full potluck:
What: Parent Night Potluck
When: Friday August 24, 2007
Where: WSHS Courtyard near the Auditorium
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (ending time approximate)

We will no longer be barbequing and we are requesting that each family bring a main course to share that feeds 4-6 people along with a side dish or dessert. Also, please bring serving utensils for your dishes.

A-L Please bring a main course and side dish (salad, bag of chips, etc…)
M-Z Please bring a main course and a small dessert to share

U of O “Security Detail” Fundraiser

The first opportunity for the “Security Detail” fundraiser is fast approaching with the first opportunity occurring September 1, 2007. The exact start time has not been finalized, but is tentatively set for approximately 8:00 a.m. (for a 12:30 p.m. game). Students, family, and friends who work on this detail must be at least 16 years old. Prior to the posting of this in today’s newsletter, there were approximately 20-25 slots remaining to fill for this first game. This is a great way to earn money for your individual student music account. It is strongly encouraged that sophomores and juniors get involved! “Band Day” Coming Soon!

Music Day is September 8. As this is our biggest fundraising activity of the year we need everyone who is able to participate. Thank you to those who have already signed up to help. If you have signed up to drive please return the completed insurance form to the band room drop box. We still need many more drivers, a coordinator for the pizza feed, a volunteer to return any pop cans that are donated, and someone to head up the clean up crew. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions. We need lots of volunteers to make this event successful. Please contact Marianne Stipe at

Happy August! What a treat to see so many of you at registration - I'm looking forward to getting back to work with all of you.

MUSIC DAY:
Support Music Day is Saturday, September 8. This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year and only takes a few hours of time on one day! Please consider getting involved as we are needing to raise monies for some great activities and things for this year!

Students wearing concert dress go throughout West Salem collecting donations. The money is combined and redistributed to each program based on participation. Participation is not required, but is strongly encouraged. The more students and helping parents Choir sends, the larger its share of the profits. (And, it's fun!)

Students will sign up the first week of class, but Music Day organizers would like to get parent volunteers signed up sooner. Any parent willing to drive students that day can contact Marianne Stipe directly. Drivers need to check in at 8:00 and meet while the kids are getting into their concert dress. The kids are out from 9:00 to noon or 1:00. There are designated "respite houses" for water and bathroom breaks. Please give Marianne your name, "Choir," contact information and number of seat belts. Also contact Marianne if you can't drive, but are willing to help another way. She is need of a couple more respite homes.

U of O GAME: September 1
Contact the Barnicks if you want to work this game. The exact start time isn't available yet, but will probably be about 8:00 a.m. for a 12:30 game. Introduction — New Band Season 2007/2008
Parents & Students—As you may see from the subject line of this email, this year I will attempt to serialize the newsletters similar to how some periodicals do so. This should assist you in more immediately ascertaining whether you are missing any given edition. I save them all, so if at anytime during the year you would like back issues simply send me an email and tell me which one you missed or need again. This is the first WSHS Band Newsletter of the 2007/2008 school year and as such will be as brief as possible.

Band Camp All Parent Meeting Handouts
For those parents that could not make the all-parents meeting on Monday evening (@7:30 p.m., 13 August 2007) please find attached to this newsletter the two main documents that were handed out at the meeting. Uniforms---Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!

This was discussed at the “All Parents” meeting Monday evening (@7:30 p.m., 8/13/07), but it is important to remind parents to get their students straightened out with their marching shoes THIS WEEK!!!!

ROOKIES (incoming Freshman) must be fitted for their marching shoes by close of business Thursday, August 16. We need to order the shoes by early Friday. Come to one of the dressing rooms in the band hall to try on shoes. Someone will try to be there afternoons and evenings this week.

VETERANS must bring their shoes in and show them to me or Mrs. Garney, also by Thursday evening. Just get this done and then you can forget about them until time to wear them!

Titans Rock!!!

Call for volunteers—during “Band Camp” dates and beyond

In addition to the “call for volunteers” in the attached “Band Camp Schedule of Events...” document, many people signed up at the “All Parent” meeting on Monday evening to volunteer time through the marching band season. If you have ANY time that can be contributed, the kids could really use your help. This is going to be an exciting year for marching band, and there is already a need for some skilled seamstress/tailors to work on uniforms and props for the field that could use the guidance of a good “handyman” and even a mechanical engineer! Soooo...if you have ANY time and ANYTHING that you can contribute to this year’s success of the WSHS Titan Marching Band, please contact Vickie Tuttle or Kami Hettwer (contact info under “Band Booster Contacts” at the end of the newsletter).

In case you missed the section requesting volunteers for the Band Camp sessions only (August 15th through August 24th only), below are the spots that could use some help. For further information please contact this year’s volunteer coordinator for the Band Camp events (Michelle Pavelek) via her email: j.pavelek@comcast.net. Parent volunteers are needed for this and next weeks activities:

• Friday, August 17th – “Lock-in Sleepover” in WSHS gym – Time: 10:00 p.m. until breakfast (@0600, Saturday morning)
  
• Saturday, August 18th – Breakfast prep and clean-up – Time: 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the gym
  
• Friday, August 24th – Parent BBQ Dinner prep and clean-up – Time: 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  
• Donations are needed for snacks and drinks during camp—Cash works J, or drop by a case of drinks, individually wrapped snacks, et cetera
  

As with any job in working with our most precious resources (these students), there is some pre-requisite paperwork required. If you’ve not been an “official” volunteer with the Salem-Keizer school system in the past 5 years (we were told at the Monday evening meeting), fill out a criminal background check ahead so you don’t have to do that at the next band gathering. Turn the form into any of the co-chairs (Kami or Vickie) or the volunteer coordinator (Michelle Pavelek).

Don't forget to mark your calendars for MUSIC DAY-Saturday, September 8th. We count on our Band parents to help make this a success every year! Sign up sheets for parent drivers & other volunteers will be up during Band camp and at the Bar-B-Que. We may also need a few respite homes for the students break time. What IS Music Day? First, no music is actually played. If you missed the description of what this event entails, in a nutshell it’s a hugely successful fund raiser for the entire BAND and music departments—the more that participate, the more percentage each group gets. The students get dressed in their “band attire” and are driven to the various neighborhoods by adult volunteers and the students go as a group (of approximately four each). It’s only for a couple of hours that ONE day and all schools do this in their respective neighborhoods—last year WSHS Band students raised over $19,000 alone. This helps offset the extra expenses that band requires that is not able to be budgeted by the school or the district for the band events. So if your student cannot make it, please contact Dr. Nail or Mr. Griffiths directly.

Car wash thanks...to Melissa Fadenrecht, Brenna Plummer and nine students for making the first Orchestra car wash on August 4th a success! Student account credit will be received soon.

Boot Camp

Bring your instruments - see you then!

At Orchestra "Boot Camp" students will have an early opportunity to work with incoming director, Daryl Silberman. The activities will include technique (scales, arpeggios, position and posture), sight reading and some work with non-classical music: fiddle, rock and blues. Additionally, there will be time built into the schedule for discussion about orchestra repertoire for the next year. Parents are welcome during the first hour on Monday for discussion and a performance by Ms. Silberman on her instruments.

All students - freshmen to seniors - are strongly encouraged to attend! The camp conflicts with the start of fall sports, but we hope to see everyone else there. Snacks will be provided.


There will be a $25 fee to cover materials and other costs (a check to "WSHS Music Boosters" can be written on the 20th.). If there are schedule conflicts that prevent you from coming, and you'd like to discuss them with Ms. Silberman, please contact her or silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us.
