Important Reminders from Todd Zimbelman for Marching Band Students

Band Camp Parent Handout, Attached

If you were unable to attend the parent meeting on Monday evening, or if you need an additional copy of the informational handout, please see the attached PDF file, where you can find info on schedules, necessary supplies, volunteer opportunities, the lock-in, and this evening’s social gatherings. Thank you to all of the parents hosting this evening’s gatherings!

Volunteers Needed for Uniform Fittings

Thanks to those who are already volunteering for uniform fittings! Additional volunteers would also be appreciated, even if you can only come for an hour or two or on only one evening. We need to get uniforms fitted and assigned to all marching band students before the exciting parent night on 8/31, when we get to see the show for the first time. Volunteers are gathering in the band room beginning at 6 pm each night. (No fittings tonight, 8/19, due to the social gatherings.)

Many hands make light work, and we still have many students to fit! If you are able to volunteer your time for this project, please contact Connie Phillips, our Uniform Coordinator at conniephillips1956@yahoo.com or (503) 391-6082.

Important Reminder #1:

Everyone in the marching band must have a 1" 3-ring binder by tomorrow morning (Wed.). This binder should have at least 40 plastic sheet protectors inside. This is needed for their music and drill sheets. Students should personalize the outside of their binder along with their name so it is easy to recognize. We start drill Wednesday morning, so it's very critical they have this by Tuesday night (tonight).

Important Reminder #2:

All winds and percussion need to wear white shirts for all marching band rehearsals (including band camp). All guard members need to wear black shirts. This is needed for drill cleaning and drill readability. Once the weather turns cold, other rehearsal clothes are permitted.

Welcome to this season’s first Music Booster Newsleter!

New Band Director and Assistant Band Director Chosen

The West Salem High School Band Boosters is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Todd Zimbelman as our new Band Director. Mr. Zimbelman comes to us from Southridge High School in Beaverton where he has been Band Director for the last three years. Previously he was Band Director at Grants Pass High School and before that taught music at the University of Oregon. Not only did Mr. Zimbelman take Southridge to the number one position in the state in Marching Band, but he also took their Wind Ensemble to the number one position at the state finals this year. His ability to bring the most out in his students is one of the many reasons for his strong reputation as one of the premiere music educators in the state.

Dr. Nail, upon hearing this news, said that Mr. Zimbelman is an outstanding music educator and will continue to build upon our already strong reputation. He could not be more pleased with the choice as he holds Todd in very high regard. Ike welcomes Mr. Zimbelman and looks forward to working with him during the transition over the first half of the year.

Mr. Zimbelman will begin working with our Marching Band as soon as he can transition away from his duties at Southridge. Beginning with the start of the new school year, Mr. Zimbelman will be working as band director at Clagget Creek Middle School, filling in for their current band director who is going to be out on maternity leave. His official first day at West Salem High will be January 4, 2010. However, he will be working with our students during this transition period.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Luke Warren as our new Assistant Band Director. Mr. Warren comes to us by way of Portland State University where he just completed his Masters Degree program in Music Education. Luke received his Bachelors in Music Performance on the bass trombone from the University of Oregon in 2004. Luke was not only a student of Mr. Zimbleman at U of O, but he also worked with him at Southridge as an assistant working with their marching band. Mr. Warren will be joining us in time to start working with our students during marching band camp. He will also be performing similar duties to those of Mr. Griffiths during the school year.

Words of Appreciation . . .

We would like to thank all of those involved in the hiring of Mr. Zimbelman, in particular Principal Ed John and Karl Raschkes. Without their foresight and determination, this tremendous opportunity would not have been possible. We would also like to thank Larysa Pavelek, Danny Mitchell, Ashley Gresley, Garrett Maltzan, and Nick Rylands for their involvement in the student portion of the interviews. Their valuable assistance, mature insights and keen observations during the follow up discussions were highly regarded and went a long way in helping make this decision. We can be proud to have students of this caliber representing our program.

Lastly, we would like to give our heart felt thanks to both Ike Nail and Brian Griffiths. Their hard work and determination has taken the West Salem High School band program from its most humble of beginnings to its place now as one of the most respected music programs in the state. We want recognize their efforts and thank them for their guidance and leadership of our students over the last seven years. Their service to our school and students will never be forgotten.

Although these changes happened quickly, we now have a tremendous staff with Mr. Zimbelman and Mr. Warren on board. We look forward to working with them and making sure they have our full support. Please join us in welcoming them to West Salem High School. We know that this year is going to be filled with excitement and, most importantly, FUN!

Solo Night – Tonight! (Thurs. 4/23)
Solo night begins at 7:00 pm at the WSHS Auditorium. Students from the Band, Choir and Orchestra will be performing. Come support our students as they prepare for the State Solo Competition.

Thanks to Students and Volunteers!
Thank you to the students and volunteers who helped with the Central Valley League Band Festival and the Orchestra Invitational Festival last Friday and Saturday. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard on and off stage to make these two events so successful!

Salem-Keizer Schools one of the “Best Communities for Music Education”
Salem-Keizer was named one of the "Best Communities for Music Education" by the NAMM Foundation. Click here for the details. The award acknowledges schools and districts who continue to support music education in schools.

Raffle Items, Garden Supplies, Store-Bought Baked Goods, and Volunteers Needed for April 30 Fundraiser
This year during Band Camp, students will be fitted for marching attire and concert attire. In order to do this, the band boosters need to purchase more garment bags and hangers. The plume bag also needs to replaced. In order to fund these purchases, we will be holding a bake sale and a raffle at the Pre-State Concert on April 30th. Our goal is to raise $300. The Choir and Orchestra will be participating in this fundraising event as well.

Bake Sale and Raffle Items Needed
We need donations of store-bought bake sale items (cookies, brownies, etc. -- single serve items) and raffle items (such as gift cards, etc.). We already have a beautiful quilt donated by a Wind Ensemble parent! As regards the bake sale goods, District policy does not allow for home-baked goods to be sold for public events; therefore, donations need to be store bought.

Gardening Baskets
Each participating music group also will be putting together a basket of gardening items. The band students' basket will be along the lines of a gardening theme. Students are being asked to provide items for the basket; such as small gardening tools, gloves, seed packets, fertilizer spikes, or anything that goes with gardening.

Donations can be brought the night of the concert of dropped off in the band room prior to the concert. We are asking that the items be labeled "Band," “Orchestra,” or “Choir,” as the proceeds will be split between music sections according to donation volume.

We will also need a few parent and student volunteers to help staff the tables.

Please contact Connie Phillips at 503-391-6082 or conniephillips1956@yahoo.com. In order to prepare enough display space and volunteer staff ahead of time, a quick call or email from those donating would be appreciated! If this event is successful, we may repeat it on May 28. Stay tuned!

Summertime news brief

Summer Fun, Concerts, Events to Plan for

The Sound of Caribbean—Come Listen, Learn to Play the Steel Drum
(Contributor: Blair Davis, edited by Jesse Seeley)
Come to a FREE practice concert tonight and hear the “sound of the Caribbean”—the steel drums. Tonight’s performance is more of a private gathering to see what is to come at this weekend’s “World Beat”. That will be something to come and see too, but there is admission to that performance (not sure of how much), but West Salem band members group called “Steel Time” will be playing the steel drums (pans) in making the sounds made famous in the Caribbean. “Steel Time” will be performing this Sunday (June 29th) at 4:00 p.m. in the “Americas Area”. Anyone that would like to enjoy some music or wants to learn how to play them next year during the school year should DEFINITELY come tonight and then to the “World Beat” event this Sunday. Here’s more specifics:
  • Tonight, Friday, June 27 Bush Park, at approximately 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 29 “World Beat” event will be playing at 4 p.m. (Editor’s note: at Bush Park I’m assuming, contributor didn’t specifically state)
For any questions concerning this, please contact Blair Davis via email at wublu07@yahoo.com

Band Camp Uniform Fittings
(Contributor: Deanna Garney)
We will need help from parents at this year’s band camp for fitting members for their Uniforms. We will need about 4-5 people for at least 4 separate evenings from 6-9pm. The first couple of nights we fit gloves and shoes. Then we fit uniforms & shakos (the band “hats”). I think the most help will be needed for the uniforms and shakos. You don't need to know how to sew. If you can hem pants that is a great value add to the team, but not necessary. It's easy to do and goes much quicker if there is plenty of help. Also, I think we will need at least 3-4 people to commit to helping with Football games and Competitions. It would be great if we had a designated “Plume” person.

For details, contact Deanna Garney via email at dg5758@comcast.net

Titan Auction—Still Seeking Help
(Contributor: Kami Hettwer)
We’re still seeking help for the 2008 Titan Auction. It’s not too soon to start thinking about this November 2008 event, so please mark it on your calendar. The Titan Foundation Auction will be held on November 22nd 2008. We need help collecting items for silent and oral auction and we need help selling tickets to the event. The more tables of 8 we sell the more money we get from our items we sell at the auction. Let's get a team together now so that we can start planning for next year's auction and raise needed funds in support of our great band program! For more information, please contact Kami Hettwer mkhett@aol.com.

Band Camp—Dates/Reminder
(Contributors: Kami Hettwer, Directors, Jesse Seeley)
There is an attached flyer with the below information as well as more detail on this upcoming event. We wanted to get the word out as soon as possible before all took off for the summer and also to better plan your summer vacations and to get this on your calendars right away. Studentsà tell any/all your friends at the Middle School level (that will be incoming freshmen) about this in the event they’d like to participate—many times they don’t find out or “get the word” because we don’t sent to a middle school distribution list and only siblings of other WSHS end up “in the know”. Below are the dates of both the “Pre-Camp” and the regular two-week session everyone knows as “Band Camp."

  • Event: “Pre-Camp”
  • Dates: August 7th & 8th

Parent Volunteers Sought for help at “Band Camp”
(Contributors: Michelle Pavelek, edited by Jesse Seeley)
Mark your calendars now as this will creep up on us and our vacations. What better way to get to see the development of a great program but with a “front row seat” at every rehearsal (well, if you WANT to see every one J). Special Announcement > Band Camp

This is a Special Announcement that was not able to be made at this past Friday evening’s “Parent’s Night” and to give it the time necessary for such a special set of parents. We could not deliver a big enough “Thank You” by reading off all of the names that it took to make this year’s Band Camp as much of a success as it was. That said, below is a special announcement from Michelle Pavelek, this year’s Band Camp Coordinator. . . she can be reached @ j.pavelek@comcast.net

Thank You West Salem Band Parents!

Band Camp was a huge success thanks to the support provided by the following parents. I do not have the names of all of the families that donated money or snacks. If you donated and your name is not on the list or if I have left out any volunteers, please e-mail me at j.pavelek@comcast.net . Thanks to all of you, we had plenty of snacks and have even filled two large storage containers with snacks that will be taken to competitions.

Band Newsletter #2

Request for Supplies for Props!
Contributor: Kami Hettwer
We have an urgent need for folks to donate 2x4s for construction of the Marching Band props. The material has to be stronger than earlier anticipated. They need to be structurally sound and at least 6 ft long, but they don’t have to be “pretty” or new as we will be painting them all the same color. We are calling out for at least 35 2x4s, each at least 6 feet. So if you can find some or someone to contribute, please contact Kami or Vickie (e-mail & phone contact at end of newsletter)

U of O “Security Detail” Fundraiser
Contributors: Lisa McIntyre, Patricia Nielsen
The first opportunity for the “Security Detail” fundraiser is fast approaching with the first opportunity occurring September 1, 2007. The exact start time has not been finalized, but is tentatively set for approximately 8:00 a.m. (for a 12:30 p.m. game). Students, family, and friends who work on this detail must be at least 16 years old. Prior to the posting of this in today’s newsletter, there were approximately 20-25 slots remaining to fill for this first game. This is a great way to earn money for your individual student music account. It is strongly encouraged that sophomores and juniors get involved! For more information, please contact the Barnick family at _barnick4@msn.com.

“Band Day” Coming Soon!
Contributors: Marianne Stipe & Susan Wyant
Music Day is September 8. As this is our biggest fundraising activity of the year we need everyone who is able to participate. Thank you to those who have already signed up to help. If you have signed up to drive please return the completed insurance form to the band room drop box. We still need many more drivers, a coordinator for the pizza feed, a volunteer to return any pop cans that are donated, and someone to head up the clean up crew. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions. We need lots of volunteers to make this event successful. Please contact Marianne Stipe at
mstipe@willamette.edu or (503) 763-1915, to volunteer or if you have questions.

WEST SALEM HIGH SCHOOL BAND BULLETIN- August 20, 2007

There has been a change to the original published agenda for this Friday’s “Parent’s Night” agenda. A hard copy notification was sent home with Band Camp participants already, but this is to facilitate those parents who may never see such handouts that seemingly “disappear” from a student’s backpack to the “home front” (I’m speaking from experience here folks).

The notification below supersedes the original that was noted in the handout and email attachment/link (item # IV) named Band Camp Schedule of Events for August 15-24 2007.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Band Camp Volunteer Coordinator (Michelle Pavelek at j.pavelek@comcast.net). Below is the notice that was sent home with the students last week:

Attention All Marching Band Parents!

Band news #1

Introduction — New Band Season 2007/2008
Parents & Students—As you may see from the subject line of this email, this year I will attempt to serialize the newsletters similar to how some periodicals do so. This should assist you in more immediately ascertaining whether you are missing any given edition. I save them all, so if at anytime during the year you would like back issues simply send me an email and tell me which one you missed or need again. This is the first WSHS Band Newsletter of the 2007/2008 school year and as such will be as brief as possible.

Band Camp All Parent Meeting Handouts
For those parents that could not make the all-parents meeting on Monday evening (@7:30 p.m., 13 August 2007) please find attached to this newsletter the two main documents that were handed out at the meeting. These are also available on the Titan Booster web site where indicated in the links below (thank you Kevin Beckstrom).

- Band Camp Schedule of Events (remaining Band Camp 2007 Schedule of Events for August 15th-24th, 2007). Contains detailed information on:
o “Sectional Socials” to be held evening of 15 August 2007
o Band Camp “Lock-In” scheduled for Friday/Saturday, 17th & 18th August, 2007
o “Parents Night” scheduled for Friday, 24th of August, 2007
o Call for Volunteers for Band Camp Events
o Also available at http://homepage.mac.com/titanmusic/BandCampSchedule.pdf.

- WSHS Titan Band Calendar for 2007/2008
o Contains most all band dates of performances, competitions, and other important events
o Both first AND second semester schedules are given
o Many dates are subject to change and this document will be periodically updated and/or your students will be sent home with WRITTEN updated material
o Also available at http://homepage.mac.com/titanmusic/BandCalendar0708.pdf

Uniforms---Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!
Contributor: Patricia Nielsen
This was discussed at the “All Parents” meeting Monday evening (@7:30 p.m., 8/13/07), but it is important to remind parents to get their students straightened out with their marching shoes THIS WEEK!!!!

ROOKIES (incoming Freshman) must be fitted for their marching shoes by close of business Thursday, August 16. We need to order the shoes by early Friday. Come to one of the dressing rooms in the band hall to try on shoes. Someone will try to be there afternoons and evenings this week.

VETERANS must bring their shoes in and show them to me or Mrs. Garney, also by Thursday evening. Just get this done and then you can forget about them until time to wear them!

Please contact Patricia Nielsen (contact info under “Band Booster Contacts” at the end of the newsletter)

Call for volunteers—during “Band Camp” dates and beyond
(Contributors: Michelle Pavelek, Kami Hettwer)
In addition to the “call for volunteers” in the attached “Band Camp Schedule of Events...” document, many people signed up at the “All Parent” meeting on Monday evening to volunteer time through the marching band season. If you have ANY time that can be contributed, the kids could really use your help. This is going to be an exciting year for marching band, and there is already a need for some skilled seamstress/tailors to work on uniforms and props for the field that could use the guidance of a good “handyman” and even a mechanical engineer! Soooo...if you have ANY time and ANYTHING that you can contribute to this year’s success of the WSHS Titan Marching Band, please contact Vickie Tuttle or Kami Hettwer (contact info under “Band Booster Contacts” at the end of the newsletter).

In case you missed the section requesting volunteers for the Band Camp sessions only (August 15th through August 24th only), below are the spots that could use some help. For further information please contact this year’s volunteer coordinator for the Band Camp events (Michelle Pavelek) via her email: j.pavelek@comcast.net. Parent volunteers are needed for this and next weeks activities:

  • Friday, August 17th – “Lock-in Sleepover” in WSHS gym – Time: 10:00 p.m. until breakfast (@0600, Saturday morning)
  • Saturday, August 18th – Breakfast prep and clean-up – Time: 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the gym
  • Friday, August 24th – Parent BBQ Dinner prep and clean-up – Time: 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Donations are needed for snacks and drinks during camp—Cash works J, or drop by a case of drinks, individually wrapped snacks, et cetera

As with any job in working with our most precious resources (these students), there is some pre-requisite paperwork required. If you’ve not been an “official” volunteer with the Salem-Keizer school system in the past 5 years (we were told at the Monday evening meeting), fill out a criminal background check ahead so you don’t have to do that at the next band gathering. Turn the form into any of the co-chairs (Kami or Vickie) or the volunteer coordinator (Michelle Pavelek).

Thank you in advance for considering becoming an official volunteer with the best band in the business, the West Salem Titan Marching Band.

“Music Day” Coming Soon!
(Contributors: Anna Stipe & Susan Wyant)
Don't forget to mark your calendars for MUSIC DAY-Saturday, September 8th. We count on our Band parents to help make this a success every year! Sign up sheets for parent drivers & other volunteers will be up during Band camp and at the Bar-B-Que. We may also need a few respite homes for the students break time. For more information, or to volunteer to help, please contact Marianne Stipe at mstipe@willamette.edu, or Susan Wyant at wyant6@comcast.net.

What IS Music Day? First, no music is actually played. If you missed the description of what this event entails, in a nutshell it’s a hugely successful fund raiser for the entire BAND and music departments—the more that participate, the more percentage each group gets. The students get dressed in their “band attire” and are driven to the various neighborhoods by adult volunteers and the students go as a group (of approximately four each). It’s only for a couple of hours that ONE day and all schools do this in their respective neighborhoods—last year WSHS Band students raised over $19,000 alone. This helps offset the extra expenses that band requires that is not able to be budgeted by the school or the district for the band events. So if your student cannot make it, please contact Dr. Nail or Mr. Griffiths directly.

Band Camp coming soon!

Band Camp starts Monday, Aug. 13! Camp runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24, with a lock down on the 17th. There will be a parent meeting at 7:30 on the 13th, and a show preview/potluck on Friday, Aug. 24.

Evening rehearsals will begin Aug. 27 two nights per week in the stadium through the marching season. We are scheduled to perform in all five home football games, and plan on entering five competitions this year

The cost is a fair share for each student, $200. The full amount is due by the beginning of Band Camp. Remember: If you're gonna do marching band, you gotta do the summer!

We look forward to another great season!
