Marching Band Takes Home More Awards at OSU Competition

In another stunning performance, the WSHS Marching Band took home preliminary honors, placing first in the Preliminary competition. The percussion (drum line and "pit") took the "High Percussion" caption award in BOTH the preliminary and finals competition, impressively topping even the more sophisticated "Open" class larger bands. If you can join us for the final competition of the year, please do come down to the University of Oregon to cheer on the WSHS Marching Band!! See next article for more information on the event.

University of Oregon's "Festival of Bands" Competition and Rehearsal Information Saturday (November 1st)

The weather doesn't look like it will be as cooperative as the several competitions before, but all competitors will have the same disadvantage with the expected rain (see NOAA forecast info in next article). The band has been practicing hard on this week's "days off" and will have one final run at the football game this Friday night (also slated as "Seniors Night"). The students already have their call times for the Friday rehearsal and game time call times; the call time for the Saturday competition will not be until 0900. It was originally stated as 0930, but the exact call time is subject to change to 0900. We had a lucky draw and the band's first performance in prelimaries isn't until 4:44 p.m.. Friday: Rain likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. East southeast wind 8 to 10 mph becoming south southwest. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. South southeast wind around 9 mph.
Saturday: Rain, mainly after 11am. High near 60. South southeast wind
between 9 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Auction—Sold Out!

Looks like tickets are sold out (if you missed out and really want to go, let me know, there may be some tickets available but not at specific tables). Music Boosters has three tables this year that is 1 more than last year. Thanks everyone!! That is great! However, we are still in need of donations, big or small—all are appreciated. Just e-mail Scotti at ndrsmom@comcast.net or give her a call at (503) 269-0887. The deadline for items to be considered for verbal auction is the 6th (Scotti needs them by that date) for the silent auction the 13th. We have some great auction items, about 5 or 6 right now, let's shoot for 10.

We still need a few volunteers to help set up the morning of the auction from about 8am-11am, parents and or students are welcome. Please let Scotti know if you can help. Thank everyone!!!

A Growing Trend? WSHS Band Takes 1st Place at PCI !

More hard work, and yet another pay off for the musicians of the WSHS Marching Band as they took home the big trophy for their overall preliminary and finals performances. Sweeping nearly every “caption award” in the preliminary of finals competition, each and every marching band and color guard member contributed in this overall team effort in “High Visuals,” “High General Effect” and “High Percussion.”

Practice and Competition Schedule for week of October 20th

The normal rehearsal schedule for Mondays and Wednesdays remains at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is still a pending rehearsal to be held on Friday and the equipment will be loaded after that rehearsal in preparation for the early call time for the competition on Saturday, October 25th at OSU. A draft of the schedule is attached and currently shows a call time at the school for 6 a.m. on Saturday (yes, that is MORNING, or 0600). Auction Update

Remember the date: November 22, 2008—The end of October is sneaking up on us. To be considered for the live auction all donations must be turned in by November 1st and “Silent Auction” by November 7th. We have received some great donations for Music Boosters including a Guided Fishing Trip (waiting for more details), 5 nights at a Sunriver Condo (sleeps 8), gift baskets, and more. We still need a lot more though. If you have a donation or can get one for us, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms that also act as a tax deductible receipt.

And with all those great prizes who would want to miss the fun? There are still tickets available. Music Boosters are trying hard to fill our second table. Please contact Scotti with the names of each person you need a ticket for. She will give you the information at that time for payment on the tickets. Remember it is $30 per person and does include dinner.

If you have already bought a ticket and want to part of our tables, please let us know. The more tickets we sell the higher our portion of the donations will be. For each full table we get 100% of the money raised for 1 item of our choice, from our donations. You can see why we want to fill as many tables as possible. Wreath and Poinsettia Sales Annual Fundraiser

It's that time of year…wreath and poinsettia sales—a favorite of many! Packets containing all the information and forms were available for your student to take home this past week (week of Oct. 1st). All profits from this sale go directly into student accounts for use to pay for trips or fair share. Turn forms and money in anytime, but they are due by October 31^st. Please mark your calendar with this date! There is a slight typographical error on the form in our favor—the turn-in sheet states the “Mixed Fruit Wreath” is $35, but it is actually $30 like the order form states. The IDEAL would be all three, which will be the first event below: “Trombones de Costa Rica”, a master class for ALL musicians entitled “Having Fun with Breathing.” The flier appears below

Auction Update

Just a reminder about the Titan Dinner & Auction, the event is on Nov. 22^nd at 5pm it is called a “Evening of Elegance” at the Salem Convention Center. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is an adult night out (who of us does not enjoy that) and semi-formal attire is suggested, so break out those fancy duds and come have a “elegant” (really fun) evening. For those of you interested there will be a “no host” bar. We have heard it is a very fun night.

Last year Band Boosters had two tables; let’s see if we can get three or four together this year. For every table we fill we get 100% of the proceeds for one of our donated auction items, of our choice. The are 8 seats to a table, if you have a group of friends you would like to sit with now is the time to get them all together while there are still full tables left. Tickets are $30 per person, if you wish to purchase a whole table the cost is $240. Seats are going quickly so don’t wait.

If you have already bought tickets and would like to be part of the Band Booster table(s) PLEASE let Scotti know how many tickets you bought and the names of the people that will be attending. We can then have you placed at a Band Booster table. This way Band Boosters gets credit for full tables. J

We hear there are some great items that are going to be part of the auction. We are still in need of donations; if you would like to make a donation, or are available to help out with rounding some up, please let Scotti know. She has the donation forms. Please remember donations are tax deductible.

We also need a few student and parent volunteers to help set up the auction tables on the morning of the event at about 8 a.m. until we are done. Please let her know if you are available to help with any of these volunteer opportunities. Our evening schedule, including dinner time, changing, warm-up, performance, and loading, will depend on our placement in Prelims and a random draw.

• 8:30 Arrive back at West and unload. 

As with all trips and events, our arrival time is a “best guess” based on available information. All students will help unload and store all equipment. After all gear is stowed, the entire ensemble will meet in the band room to dismiss.

On this and every other occasion when we will be representing West Salem and the WSHS Band Program as a group, the highest standards of behavior are expected. All school rules for acceptable behavior apply on this and every field trip. Contact a director immediately regarding anything out of the ordinary, especially threatening or abusive behavior. Do not leave the group for any reason without Mr. Nail's/Mr. Griffiths’ knowledge and permission. If you will not return home on the bus, you must have a note granting parental approval before we leave West.

The Four Deadly Sins of Band Travel
(1.) Use of any controlled substance, 

(2.) Refusing directions from chaperones or staff, 

(3.) Any sexual impropriety,

(4.) Deliberate destruction of property.

Be safe, be courteous and behave well.

Urgent Band Request

CLASSIFIED AD: URGENT EXPERIENCED GRANT WRITIER NEEDED IMMEDIATELY

Dear Band Boosters,

This weekend, we learned of an opportunity to apply for a grant for $1,000-$8,000 from the William Walton Charitable Trust Foundation, a grant for community projects including those for youth and the arts. If we apply for this grant and win it, this would help tremendously with our goal of purchasing the trailer that will help transport our gear to competitions—a purchase that will save us a lot of money in truck rental fees.

The grant is due on September 15th—which is soon! If you are a grant writer, have grant writing experience, or know someone with such experience who would be willing to help us apply for this grant, please contact Vicki Tuttle at Tuttle84@comcast.net.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: “Small Learning Community”/Friends of Music meeting January 7

Many may have seen this very topic on the front page of this morning’s Statesman’s Journal, but you all knew of this ahead of time!! J Now that you’re “in the know” of this topic’s importance, please help get the word out (especially to the elementary levels) about the meeting next Monday. Attached please find some of the condensed meeting notes on this topic. The future of music might be at stake, so please consider reading up on this and attending the meeting.

Below is the latest information and communication from SLC/FOM Coordinator Janet Romine on parking, et cetera, in case you can spare the time to attend this important event.

“Hopefully you saw the front page of the Statesman this morning. I'm here to stress to you the importance of having a huge attendance at this Monday, Jan. 7, 6:30PM, McKay High School meeting on small learning communities.....sponsored by FOM. You may not be affected currently by this small community trend but it is coming to your area too!!!!!! Now is the time to be pro-active. If there is a small attendance at the meeting, then the district thinks no one cares (I'm having a hard time getting elementary folks to go because they don't see it as their issue...although it really is everyone's issue).”

Winter Ensemble – Latest News

Most of those in the “Winter Ensemble” have already received the below information directly from Alan, but it bears repeating...“People are going to know all about the West Salem Winter Ensemble when we are finished!”

In an email sent out directly to those in the ‘ensemble’ earlier this week:
“. . . about the camp this weekend. The times are 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a lunch hour and a dinner hour. The battery and guard will learn drill and the pit will continue to work on music. If you are in the battery or guard be sure and wear comfortable clothes that you can move in (sweats are always good)...we will be wearing socks (no shoes) so be sure and bring a couple pair of thick socks (sometimes a freshly painted floor will eat socks like crazy!!). If all goes well we will be able to chunk through the show, music and drill, by the end of the night!

Also, the second installment of your Fair Share is due...please don't get behind on your payments...the success or failure of this group relys heavily on the students paying on time. Remember, if you have payment "issues" all you need to do is talk to me!”

Concert Attire Reminder

As was noticed at some of the previous concerts at the year end, some students still did not have all of their concert attire, so this is a reminder to students and parents how the students are to dress for concerts. The school issues each student a tuxedo jacket and trousers (boys/jazz players) or concert dress (girls). Each student who wears a tux is to provide his or her other concert attire to accompany it: Black bow tie, black cummerbund, white tuxedo shirt, long black socks, black shoes. ANY STUDENT WHO IS NOT ABLE TO (for any reason) PROVIDE HIS OR HER OWN THINGS SHOULD COME AND SEE ONE OF THE BAND DIRECTORS RIGHT AWAY. We have a few extras from prior years, and there is often scholarship money available. Also, if any student has an extra tux shirt, bow tie or cummerbund he or she no longer wears, please consider donating it back to the band. We would love to have those items for last-minute emergencies! We have had good quality and prices from Mr. Formal (on Commercial Street South). Here is their contact information and the prices for various items. The student should be sure to specify it is for a school music group (in order to get the discount).

Concert: Allen Vizzutti

Probably not the best kept secret in town is our opportunity to have Allen Vizzutti come and play with the McNary Band. This concert got placed at an incredibly busy time, but to let you know it is February 12th, 7:00pm at the Salem Alliance Church. Tickets will be $ 3.00 - we have not set a date when those will go on sale, but we hope they will go fairly fast once they are available.

I am making sure that Allen does not get abused time-wise while he is here, by not allowing any other clinics to be scheduled for him on the days he is in town. This is our area wide concert, so he will be working with Whiteaker and Claggett as well as McNary. We hope several of your students will take the time to come and listen to him play. He is incredible.

With the business of times approaching us all, we wanted to give everyone that is interested a heads-up to mark their calendars for this after-holiday meeting that is very important event to promote music and the “Friends of Music” community organization. Scheduled to be in attendance at the discussions are Superintendent Sandy Husk, Assistant Superintendent Gelbrich as well as several schools’ principals and others.

Winter Ensemble—Update: Get ready to roll

Or should we say “drum roll”? J This weekend is the first of the camps to rehearse for this year’s show. If you still want to join in the fun, just show up to the first rehearsal if you have not already signed up. IMPORTANT NOTE for this event: All students need to have a plan for traveling from West to the Convention Center (and back)—the event, once there will be quite short. All students are asked to wear Duck or Beaver colors, and to bring extra Duck or Beaver attire for students who may not have any. This is a semi-formal event, so dress tastefully, please. We know that this could be difficult with the bold colors of the two colleges, but slacks, skirts, and nice shoes as appropriate. This will be a fairly SHORT gig, so make sure your ride is available for the return trip as well.

Most already know about the WSHS Playoff Game at PGE Park: Friday evening at 8 p.m. As discussed at the Band Awards, Call Time for this event will be 4:45 p.m. at WSHS. STUDENTS: Please remember to bring a sack dinner and wear as warm clothes as possible (as well as rainwear if necessary). We will probably bring the ponchos, but extra personal rain gear for your personal comfort. The word on the news is that Friday's high will be 35 and low around 28. Since the team is playing late it's going to be cold. Also see requests below. . .

Thanks again to all the Band Boosters, parents, and students for making it to the Band Awards this past Tuesday evening! It was a great success on this second attempt. Free Chamber Music Concert at Willamette
Chamber Music at Hudson Hall on Thursday, November 29th, just after holding the clinic for WSHS, Mr. Wytko will be sharing the stage with Randy Kem, David Ingram and guests such as Andy Kronser, Richard such, Greg Angeloni and Mark Powers. This concert will be at 8:00 p.m. and is also FREE!

Percussion/Marimba Clinic at Weathers Music
There will be a special guest soloist coming to Weather's Music. Nathan Daughtrey will perform on a special five octave marimba made available through Weathers music. Nathan Daughtrey, a clinician endorsed by Vic Firth and Yamaha, will conduct a special (FREE) clinic in the Bach Room at Weathers Music on Friday, December 14th at 4:00 p.m.. Marimba and mallet players from the area are invited to this free clinic.

Uniform Fittings – Formal Concert Attire—Time is running out!

Hey All...Just an update... We are on schedule so far with the design...it is looking pretty cool! We still need about 7 people to be prop people, so if any of your friends want to participate have them email me. The first dates for the season are the music camp dates...Dec 15 and 16 (Sat/Sun) Sat will be 9 am-9 pm, and Sunday will be 9 am-4 pm. These dates are mandatory (as are all of our dates), so be sure to plan accordingly. (The guard may have a slightly different schedule...check with Jen).

The drill camp is Jan 5 and 6...times =TBA. Also please be advised that there will be a floor painting party at some point before Jan 5...possibly over the break...all that can help will be appreciated...I'll let you know as soon as I know.

Also, be advised that the first installment of your fair share is due at the music camp...try hard to not get behind in your payments. AND…if you need some financial assistance get with Mr. G or Vickie Tuttle on the Christmas tree lot fundraiser (Editor's note: fundraiser info immediately below) they talked about at the awards ceremony. Fund Raising Opportunity
For those that may need assistance on raising funds for your interests (Winter Ensemble, fair share balance, etc), there will be an opportunity to work shifts at the Christmas Tree booth that Mr. Urbani announced at the Band Awards Tuesday evening. If you are interested, immediately contact him AND Vickie Tuttle (urbanic@open.org and tuttle84@comcast.net, respectively). At press time the exact shifts that were available or details on this opportunity did not make its way for this newsletter, thus contacting Mr. Urbani and Vickie is imperative if you want to be on this list

Orchestra News

1) We're reaching the end of the fund-raising season for this Fall - we've complete Music Day, Entertainment Books, and Poinsettia Sales. Wreath sale packets with money need to be in the lock box by Nov. 8. Thank you to all who sold and purchased fund-raisers.

2) Parent meeting Tuesday November 6, 6:30pm - Orchestra Room. Please come to the next Orchestra Boosters meeting in the Orchestra room on Tuesday, November 6th, 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing finances, fundraising, retreat organization, future concert dates, and more. E-mail Jenny Gates with other suggested agenda items.

3) This Monday students (and parents) have an opportunity to hear the world renowned St. Lawrence String Quartet in performance at Willamette University. See last week's newsletter for more information. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, and are available at the Pentacle Theatre Ticket Office in Salem at 145 Liberty Street NE, Suite 102. Tickets can be charged over the phone by calling (503) 485-4300, and are subject to a service charge. For information call the Willamette University Music Department at (503) 370-6255.

4) NO SCHOOL this Thursday and Friday. Students will receive extra credit if their parents come to visit Ms. Silberman at parent conferences.

Entertainment Books are Here!
Orchestra students can earn money for their personal accounts by selling entertainment books to friends and families. Contact neighbors, call Grandma and Grandpa, have Mom and Dad tell people at work that you have entertainment books.

The entertainment books are great this year! They have coupons for groceries, fast food, elegant dining, gas, attractions, paint and household supplies, movies, car rentals and more. I am impressed by how many local and usable coupons are in the book.

For each book you sell, $8 will be credited to your account. If enough books are sold, you may even make more!

In addition, for every 5 books sold, you will be given a free book after the sale is over. You can either sell this book and keep the $20 or keep and use the coupons yourself. Other prizes are available. For every book you sell you get a chance at playing the “Get in the Groove game” to win over 1,000 prizes. Enter the internet drawing every day for another chance to win.

Here is what you need to know:
1. Books cost $20
2. There are two kinds of books, one with coupons for all of Oregon and another with coupons for Portland. The Portland book also has coupons for many attractions in Oregon.
3. Books will be checked out to Orchestra students during Orchestra class. Students are responsible to return money for these books or return the books.
4. All money and books must be returned to Linda Beardsley by October 30th.
5. Students may check out more books when they bring in the money from the first books sold.

Important Message from Dr. Nail
Just a reminder that this is the time of the year to set up your private lessons for students who want them. Also coming due are the WIBC and All-State audition tapes. Due starting October 1! Don’t delay as this date will be here before you know it! Finally, we’ve attached a finalized draft of this year’s full calendar of events. Most dates have stayed the same from the previous document you had during band camp, but this one supersedes it, so please dispose of the other one so as to not confuse the two. There are still some “TBD” dates, but the competition dates for Marching Band are fairly solid. We will publish portions of this document in this newsletter for near future events and update the entire document from time-to-time, so please be on the lookout for updates.
The next few dates from the document that are NEXT WEEK:

Reminder: U of O “Security Detail” Fundraiser (“encore performance” from Newsletter #2)

The first opportunity for the “Security Detail” fundraiser is fast approaching with the first opportunity occurring Sept. 1, 2007. The exact start times have not been finalized, but is tentatively set for approximately 8:00 a.m. (for a 12:30 p.m. game). Students, family, and friends who work on this detail must be at least 16 years old. Prior to the posting of this in today’s newsletter, there were approximately 20-25 slots remaining to fill for this first game. This is a great way to earn money for your individual student music account. It is strongly encouraged that sophomores and juniors get involved! Orchestra news

Car wash thanks...to Melissa Fadenrecht, Brenna Plummer and nine students for making the first Orchestra car wash on August 4th a success! Student account credit will be received soon.

Boot Camp
Monday, August 20th, 9:00 - noon

Bring your instruments - see you then!

At Orchestra "Boot Camp" students will have an early opportunity to work with incoming director, Daryl Silberman. The activities will include technique (scales, arpeggios, position and posture), sight reading and some work with non-classical music: fiddle, rock and blues. Additionally, there will be time built into the schedule for discussion about orchestra repertoire for the next year. Parents are welcome during the first hour on Monday for discussion and a performance by Ms. Silberman on her instruments.

All students - freshmen to seniors - are strongly encouraged to attend! The camp conflicts with the start of fall sports, but we hope to see everyone else there. Snacks will be provided.


There will be a $25 fee to cover materials and other costs (a check to "WSHS Music Boosters" can be written on the 20th.). If there are schedule conflicts that prevent you from coming, and you'd like to discuss them with Ms. Silberman, please contact her or silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us.

U. of O. game September 1st
Contact the Barnicks if you want to work this game. The exact start time isn't available yet, but will probably be about 8:00 a.m. for a 12:30 game. Students, and family and friends who work on their behalf, must be at least 16 years old. There are about 20 - 25 slots to fill for this game.

Music Day is Saturday, September 8th - parents needed
All Band, Choir and Orchestra students and parents work together on this day to raise money for West's music programs. Students wearing concert dress go throughout West Salem collecting donations. The money is combined and redistributed to each program based on participation. Participation is not required, but is strongly encouraged. The more students and helping parents Orchestra sends, the larger its share of the profits. (And, it's fun!)

Students will sign up the first week of class, but Music Day organizers would like to get parent volunteers signed up sooner. Any parent willing to drive students that day please contact Marianne Stipe directly. Drivers need to check in at 8:00 and meet while the kids are getting into their concert dress. The kids are out from 9:00 to noon or 1:00. There are designated "respite houses" for water and bathroom breaks. Please give Marianne your name, "Orchestra," contact information and number of seat belts. Also contact Marianne if you can't drive, but are willing to help another way.
