Last Day to order Band Parent T-Shirts

A part II order for the Band Parent T-shirts will be submitted this Friday (12 September), so if you still wanted to order one there is still 1 more day. Again, these are the same design as students except with the words "Band Parent" written above the front design. Shirts are $10.00 each. Uniform Update: All Band Members Must Have Black Socks!

Please remember to bring black socks when dressing in uniform. No ankle-length or quarter socks. They must cover your ankles completely. Pick up a bag of inexpensive black cotton socks from Target, Fred Meyers, Wal-Mart.... You will need to have 2-3 on hand at competitions. There is nothing worse then spending a entire day marching in wet socks. We also need to have some in stock at school to help out those who do forget theirs, so if some of you could donate a bag that would be great. Tonight! (Friday, 9/5) Marching Band Performs at Halftime of Football Game
The band’s call times are much earlier and they’ve already received their instructions for arrival time to prepare for tonight’s performance. The marching band performs at the “halftime show” of tonight’s first home game at WSHS football field. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. with the halftime show starting at approximately 7:45 to 8:15, depending on game progress, penalties, score, et cetera. 

Editor’s Commentary: The REAL show in other words starts at halftime... It should be noted that the players in the marching band are athletes in their own right—football practice did not consist of 12 hour days for 2 weeks straight. Many band members give up playing sports to be ON the marching band, so you’ll see a good show of two different types of athletes at these games. Below is the approximate temperatures for tonight’s game, and you’ll note quite a quick drop between the 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. times, so bring a coat. . .

Tomorrow (Saturday, 9/6) - “Music Day 2008”
Call time is 8:00 and we should be finished about 1:00 or so. Students will need to check in and dress in uniforms right away upon completion of the day. Drivers and other volunteers should be getting a reminder call this week, but we will see you at 8:00 as well. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and it is important for everyone to be there. Thanks to all of you who have signed up for teams and for volunteering. Monday, 9/9 - “Jazz Ensemble” First Meeting
The first Jazz Ensemble meeting will be Monday, Sept. 8, at 6:40 a.m. All interested students are encouraged to attend! That is NOT a “typo” folks—that is 0640, as in the morning - so obviously, only the serious musician will apply. And if you’re in “marching band”, you already hold the “keys” to being a serious musician.

Entertainment Books - More Information

I am in the Band Room on Monday mornings from 7:30 - 9:45, and then also on Monday & Wednesday evenings from 8:45 - 9:30. Our email is soggyloafer@comcast.net or you can call my cell phone at (503) 999-4199 and arrange to come by our house to pick some up.

I also have some hand-outs for selling "out-of-state" books to your relatives and still earn credit for the sale. If your family is planning a vacation in another state sometime in 2009, buy a book for that area now. Your student will get the credit for the sale and you'll save a bundle while you're on vacation.

There are white envelopes on the window shelf by the Band Room office marked “E-books”, “Name”, “$” on the front. Fill in the blanks, put your money in the envelope, seal it up and drop it in the green lock box on the wall by the Band Room office. Money needs to be deposited as soon as you receive it.

The sale will run through October 13th, at which time all money will need to be turned in. Any books that are not sold will have to be returned in perfect condition in order to get full credit, or the cost of the book will be added to the student's account.

Choir News

Many thanks to all of you for attending and supporting our concert last night! I was very proud of the students and delighted with where we are for October!

If you're wondering why some of the Titan Choir and Chorale students were switching robes, it is because we do not have enough correctly sized robes. We have many that are too short or too long. We are working on resolving the issue so as not to add stress before the concert! Many thanks to Aaron Hukari, Concert Choir senior, for his many hours of work on getting robes organized and checked out.

UPCOMING CONCERTS:
Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. is the Elementary Honor Choir concert. Chorale and Concert Choir will sing on this concert along with Walker and the Elementary Honor Choir.
Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. - Concert Choir will be performing at Capitol Manor. This date was given to students in early September, but is not in the course guide calendar.
Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. - Holiday Concert
Thursday, December 13 at 12:00 noon - Capitol Rotunda

WREATH/POINSETTIA SALE:
This sale is going on right now. If you traditionally purchase greens or poinsettias for the holidays, please consider purchasing through us. Ask your student to pick up a packet in the choir room. Forms are also available on the Music Booster Web site.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS:
This sale ends next Thursday, November 1.

Greetings! There is quite a bit of info in this e-mail, so please take a minute or two and read through the entire thing. If you are a student, please print this off and share it with your parents.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS:
We have more Greater Oregon books available. The sale ends November 1st. Books are $20 and your student can pick one up during their choir class.

WREATH/POINSETTIA SALES:
We have packets available if your student is interested in selling holiday greens and poinsettias. Money earned goes into their individual choir account. This sale ends October 29th!

UPCOMING CONCERT:
Our Fall concert is Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m. We ask all students to be in concert apparel and in the choir room by 6:30 p.m. that evening. We need some ushers and folks to man tables before the concert. Please e-mail Judi Larson at judilarson@msn.com if you can help. You would need to arrive by 6:20.

CHOIR BOOSTER MEMBERSHIPS:
Many of you have taken advantage of this opportunity - thank you! We will have a section of reserved seats at our concert for you.

VOICE CLASS:
Kara Quello, a local voice teacher, is offering group voice lessons during choir class time. She charges $10 per session. This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are interested in learning more about their voice, confidence in their singing, music reading and everything that goes with being a great choir singer. If your student is already studying privately with someone - wonderful! Kara will be starting her first voice class in Concert Choir this Thursday. Students who are interested should see Mrs. McIntyre.

Just an update on the choirs as we near our Fall concert.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS:
This sale ends November 1st. We will be getting more Greater Oregon books this week and still have a few Portland books. The books are $20 each and checks should be made out to WSHS Music Boosters. Many thanks for your support!

FALL CONCERT:
Our Fall Concert is Wednesday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. We will be needing ushers for this concert (at least 6). Please email Judi Larson at judilarson@msn.com if you are able to be an usher. You would need to arrive by 6:20 p.m.

JAZZ FESTIVAL:
The jazz festival is Saturday, November 17 and we'll be looking for some volunteers regarding this event. More info to come!

HOLIDAY CONCERT DATE CHANGE:
The Holiday Concert has been moved to Tuesday, December 11. Please make this change on your calendar! We will still be traveling to the Capitol Rotunda on Thursday, December 13 Noon-1:00.

Orchestra News, Part II

1) Please check the blog often: www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com - Ms.Silberman's posted info and links for all students.

2) Have you really read the handbook? Really? Oh yeah? Ok, what's the Bob Marley quote at the end? Please make sure that you're dutifully informed so that our program runs as smoothly as possible.

3) If anyone has an old (first?) violin in the family that your student isn't using, we have need to provide a few students with violins - even if it's just a loan for a short while. Our classroom is short on violins due to a repair and rehair issue (which will be hopefully resolved by November). Please contact Ms. Silberman if you have an instrument that might be happier practiced on than left in a closet.

4) Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing this Saturday, Sept. 29. Ms. Silberman's husband, violist Danny Seidenberg, is in the viola section, as well as many other Salem-Keizer orchestra teachers. BEETHOVEN'S 5th! Really - you know, Duh Duh Duh Duhhhhhhh. Come hear this wonderful piece - possibly one of the most recognized pieces ever - and students can review the concert for one of their 2 concert reviews due each semester. Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Elsinore. Student tickets are $5. (www.salemchamberorchestra.org)

Entertainment Books are Here!
Orchestra students can earn money for their personal accounts by selling entertainment books to friends and families. Contact neighbors, call Grandma and Grandpa, have Mom and Dad tell people at work that you have entertainment books.

The entertainment books are great this year! They have coupons for groceries, fast food, elegant dining, gas, attractions, paint and household supplies, movies, car rentals and more. I am impressed by how many local and usable coupons are in the book.

For each book you sell, $8 will be credited to your account. If enough books are sold, you may even make more!

In addition, for every 5 books sold, you will be given a free book after the sale is over. You can either sell this book and keep the $20 or keep and use the coupons yourself. Other prizes are available. For every book you sell you get a chance at playing the “Get in the Groove game” to win over 1,000 prizes. Enter the internet drawing every day for another chance to win.

Here is what you need to know:
1. Books cost $20
2. There are two kinds of books, one with coupons for all of Oregon and another with coupons for Portland. The Portland book also has coupons for many attractions in Oregon.
3. Books will be checked out to Orchestra students during Orchestra class. Students are responsible to return money for these books or return the books.
4. All money and books must be returned to Linda Beardsley by October 30th.
5. Students may check out more books when they bring in the money from the first books sold.
