Drumline—Mandatory Meeting June 1

Hey Guys and Gals...

We have finally scheduled a day to get the high school drumline set for the summer/fall.  The date is Monday June 1 from 3:30-5:30pm at the West Salem Band Room.  This time is mandatory for all those interested in playing in the battery in the fall.(snares, quads, and bass drum).  Pit players need not attend this session.  Sooooo, if you are GOING to be a 9th grader through a senior, and you want a shot at the battery you must be there!  This is the only session we are having, so please be ready to play.  I am pretty sure you all know the types of exercises and techniques we use so dust off the sticks and come to play.

See you on the 1st.

Volunteers Needed for Teacher Appreciation Luncheon May 27
Now is the time when we as parents show our appreciation to the teachers and staff who work with our kids in so many ways on a daily basis.  Many of us are connected with the teachers already, however a group effort on the part20of the parents and families of West students means a lot to the teachers.

We are gearing up for our annual teacher appreciation luncheon.  It will be held on Wednesday May 27 during both lunches in the Titan room.  We have selected a menu and now we need to get people signed up to help bring food.  In the past, some people have wanted to just donate some money towards the luncheon, that will probably be okay too.  Missy Page will be coordinating our efforts.  What I need from each of the booster presidents is a list of names of people who will sign up for different things.  I think that there are individuals who are willing to help outside of our booster groups too, we will try to contact them as well.  Foundation members feel free to sign up for stuff as well!  We will also need servers the day of the luncheon, so let us know if you want to serve too.

We are need approximately 8 people from each group to donate food items.
These are:
1 pan chicken enchiladas to serve 10-12
1 pan beef enchiladas to serve 10-12
1 crockpot of taco seasoned ground beef
1 crockpot of spanish rice
1 crockpot black beans
1 large bag salad (costco size)
1 large cake or pan of brownies
1 chopped onion, 3 sliced tomatoes

If Athletics, ABC, Grad party and Music each donate the above items that will make a huge difference!  Extra items that may also be donatated: 1 bag of lemons, 2 bags of ice, 1 lg bag shredded cheese, 3 jars of salsa, paper plates, utensils, cups and napkins for 120 staff members.

S-K bands will play for state titles

Most groups had to wait until Monday to get the final word
By Barbara CurtinStatesman Journal

Salem-Keizer schools will be hard to miss at the state music competitions in mid-May.
District string ensembles and symphony orchestras will account for nine of the 21 groups chosen to play at the Orchestra State Championships on May 15 at Oregon State University.

As with choirs and bands, most groups that qualified for state during district competitions had to wait until Monday for final word from the Oregon School Activities Association. Independent judges had to further narrow the finalists in some categories by listening to tapes.

These Salem-Keizer string orchestras will compete at Oregon State University on May 15: McKay, 8 a.m.; McNary, 8:50 a.m.; West Salem, 10:20 a.m.; Sprague, 1:45 p.m.; South Salem, 2:35 p.m.

These full symphony orchestras will compete that afternoon and evening: North Salem, 3:50 p.m.; Sprague, 4:25 p.m.; South Salem, 6:20 p.m.; and West Salem, 7:30 p.m.

These bands will compete in the Class 6A State Band Championships at OSU on May 16: McKay, 9 a.m.; McNary, 10:45 a.m.; Sprague, 2 p.m.; West Salem, 4:15 p.m; and South Salem, 6:45 p.m.

These Salem-Keizer high schools will compete in the Class 6A Choir State Championships on May 9 at George Fox University in Newberg: West Salem, 2:40 p.m.; North Salem, 3:40 p.m.; South Salem, 5 p.m.; McNary, 5:40 p.m.; and Sprague, 6 p.m.

Advanced Orchestra performs at 10:50 a.m.
Advanced Symphony performs at 3:45 p.m.
Directions to the LaSells Student Center attached.

Check the blog this weekend for updates on scores. GOOD LUCK TO THE WIND ENSEMBLE ON SATURDAY!!

2) Wednesday, May 21st, the orchestras of periods 5,6, and 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, and Symphony Strings) will be performing at the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library at 7:00 p.m.

The dress will be professional casual: Black shirts (not too short of a sleeve), black closed toe shoes, and any of the following colored pants: beige, tan, khaki, cream, white, or brown. Suggestions for inexpensive purchase: TJ Maxx, Ross, Old Navy, Fred Meyer, Kohl's, or Target (and there's always Goodwill, too). This has been discussed at length in class - students are well aware that they need to wear something that looks nice.

3)Thursday, May 22nd, Advanced Orchestra, periods 1/2, will be performing for the parents
and students of the area's 4th and 5th grade classes at West's auditorium.

Students are welcome to wear their 'prom' formals to this concert - women may wear prom dresses, as long as they are appropriate, and they have to be able to actually play in them (for some cellists and upper string players, it may not work to have a tight or low plunged dress). If the prom dress is not going to work, any nice formal dress will do. Or women may wear their orchestra black. Men will wear their symphony tuxes.

4) The Salem Pops is playing at the Elsinore on Saturday May 10. For more information: www.salempopsorchestra.org - there are student tickets available at the door, as always.

5) Bass players - please arrange to stay after school on Wednesday, May 14th, 2:30 - 3:30, to work with Tyler Abbot - adjunct professor of classical and jazz bass at U of O.

6) All students who have received State tshirts or who have ordered sweatshirts, please remember to bring your money (if you're not using money from your student account) to Ms. Silberman this next week. Checks payable to WSHS Music Boosters.

7) We will be selling "Titan Music" water bottles. These are hard plastic (the non-outgassing type) with a screw top. THEY CANNOT GO IN THE DISHWASHER. They have a music quote on one side: You Are The Music While The Music Lasts ~T.S. Eliot. They will be available starting next week. $5 - payable to WSHS Music Boosters.

1 (One) bus will leave Corvallis at 9:15pm - we expect many students to have parents who come to see the groups perform and then take them home. Students will be expected to touch base with their teachers to pick up assignments to do over the weekend. They will be officially excused from classes after their bus has left.

See last week's newsletter (on the blog - www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com) for the full information about times and schedules of performances. All performers will receive a detailed itinerary of the day.

Best of luck to all the wonderful Titan Musicians performing at State this next week - Choir, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Symphony.

2) Here are the important May dates for the Titan Orchestra program:

Wednesday, May 21 - Period 5,6, and 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphony Strings) will perform at 7pm at the Loucks Auditorium at the downtown Salem Public Library. Call time will be 6pm

Thursday, May 22 - "West Area Orchestra Festival" involved only Advanced Orchestra members (and the area's 4th and 5th grade orchestra students). Concert is at 7pm, call time will probably be 6:40pm.

Advanced Symphony will meet every Tuesday and Friday this month, including the Friday before Memorial Day - we will be learning new repertoire for the June 2nd performance and it's just not ok for anyone to miss rehearsals unless they've discussed it with the directors - it is a full credit, graded course (just a reminder). Thanks!

3) Salem Youth Symphony performs their final concert of the year Sunday, May 4th, 3:00 pm
at Smith Auditorium on the Willamette campus. For more information: www.salemyouthsymphony.org.

This is a great review possibility - and we have a number of Titan Musicians playing in the SYS. Come enjoy some of the Planets from Gustav Holst!

Happy Musical May!

(Contributor: Daryl Silberman, Orchestra Director)

By the way, call time for Advanced Symphony for Saturday April 12th is 12:55 at the front of the auditorium. Performance time (for parents) is 2:45. We'll be finished around 4pm (technically, 3:50 p.m., but it often runs a little late).

Orchestra News

1) Concert Tuesday October 23 is at 7 pm - call time for all students (dressed with instruments tuned and ready to go) is 5:45 pm. A few students seem to be unclear about the 'black socks or tights' policy -all young ladies are to wear opaque tights or socks and closed toed shoes with a heel strap or solid backed heel - all young men are to wear tux, cummerbund, tie, tux shirt, black socks and concert dress shoes -not sneakers!! Mr. Formal currently has a fantastic sale for students needing tux and shoe items. All students must have proper concert attire or they will not be allowed to play on concert night - please email Ms. Silberman directly (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us) if there are *any* questions regarding attire. We look forward to seeing you at the concert!

2) Parent conferences for West Salem High School are Nov. 7 and 8 - if there are any concerns or questions that you know you'd like Ms. Silberman to address at your meeting time, feel free to touch base with her via email or phone before the meeting. Please use this conference time to discuss any issues regarding practice time, private lessons, and instruments or materials. If you are unable to meet with Ms. Silberman during the schedule conference times but you wish to meet with her, please contact her directly to make arrangements.

3) Saturday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. in Hudson Hall at Willamette the Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing "side-by-side" with the Salem Youth Symphony string sections - this is a fantastic concert-going opportunity for both students and parents. Come support members of the Salem Keizer School District Music Faculty and West Salem Titan Orchestra members by attending one of the concerts. Student tickets are $5.00 at the door. Check the SCO website: www.salemchamberorchestra.org.

4) 7) West Salem High School's annual Titan Auction is Saturday, November 17th. We have two tables reserved for any Orchestra parents/boosters who would like to sit together. A whole table qualifies us for 100% instead of 50% of the selling price of an Orchestra-donated auction item. If you would like to be at one of these tables, please do not buy your own tickets. You'll pay for tickets being held. Tickets are $30 each, regardless of where you sit, and are otherwise available from Susan Tolley (lstolley7@msn.com), at Today's Hair, or at the front desk at school. Do you have an appealing item or service to donate? Contact Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com or reply to this e-mail. The deadline for big-ticket oral auction items is November 2nd. The deadline for silent auction items is November 14th. Donation forms, more details, etc. are available - please ask. The theme for the evening is "007" and decorations will be casino-oriented.

5) Entertainment book sales are going well! Ms. Silberman will celebrate sales by inviting all students who sell at least one book to a special lunch treat - and the student who sells the most in each class will get
a trip to the 'treasure chest'. Wreath and poinsettia sales are ongoing. The deadline for poinsettia orders/money is October 29th. The deadline for wreath orders/money is November 8th. Pick-up for all items is November 30th/December 1st. The profit to student accounts can't be figured until the sale is complete, but in years' past has been about $6-7.00 per poinsettia and about $9.00 per wreath.

6) Calling All Parents, Calling All Parents - please come to an open meeting of the Orchestra Booster club at 6:30pm (after Symphony rehearsal) on Tuesday evening Nov. 6. in the Orchestra room. Items on the agenda include retreat information for early spring, financial expenditures, and holiday concert reception possibilities. Please send any other agenda suggestions to Jenny Gates at gatesjenny@aol.com

7) Dr. Nail and Ms. Silberman are entertaining the possibility of continuing with Tuesday evening 4:30 - 6:30pm rehearsals once the full symphony comes together in November (after Marching Band is finished). If this is a huge inconvenience for any string members, please contact Ms. Silberman. An official announcement about the time will be made in the next week.

Quick Orchestra update

Boot Camp
Please just reply to Daryl SIberman directly at daryl@daryls.com or silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us if you haven't made plans to come and would like to. Again, parents are welcome the first hour on Monday.

Orchestra Boosters
Parents, if you aren't able to stop in on Monday, there will be another meeting time scheduled for parents after school starts. It will be another opportunity to meet Ms. Silberman, go over the handbook given to students the first week of school and answer any questions. We'll also be looking for volunteers for various projects!

After-school Symphony start date: Friday, September 14
This is period 10 on the schedule, Section ID# US4032-003. It meets Tuesdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Friday after school until about 4:00 p.m.

If you were in after-school Symphony last year, and haven't added it to your schedule yet, please do it! If you weren't in Symphony last year, and would like to be this year, that decision will be made with Ms. Silberman after school starts.

Symphony will start for all string players on the 14th. They will work alone with Ms. Silberman on a variety of pieces - movie scores to classical symphonic works - until the winds and brass join the group after Marching Band ends. Then the combined group is co-directed by Mr. Nail and Ms. Silberman. They have met and are planning an exciting year.

First semester concert dates: October 23, December 11
Exact times coming later, but we know that family calendars fill up quickly.....
