Jazz Night Tonight! May 29

Tonight’s the night for Jazz at WSHS! The Vocal Performance will be from 7:00 -7:40 in Auditorium (Admission free), and the Big Band event will take place from 7:45-9:45 in the Commons. Admission is $5 Adult, $3 Students and Seniors. Come one, come all!

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL PARENTS OF BAND, COLORGUARD AND MB STUDENTS!**

We have several positions in the WSHS Band Boosters that need to be filled immediately. Please consider your time and talents toward helping our Bands continue the excellence and traditions that WSHS has developed throughout its early years.  Working together we can help keep this group moving forward for years to come. 

There are many small jobs as well as coordinator positions that have been filled or have been advertised in the previous newsletters, however the following are imperative to continue planning into the summer.

• Chair and Assistant Booster Chair
• * Fundraising Coordinator/s (especially Car Washes)

If you would consider filling or helping with these positions or have any questions regarding these positions please contact either Brian Griffiths or Ike Nail.  If you have specific questions they can help direct you to someone who has further information regarding the positions.

Marching Band Deposits due June 1

All students planning to participate in the WSHS Marching Band and Color Guard need to submit their registration forms and $100 deposits no later than June 1. Registration forms are available in the band room.

Please note: Dr. Nail and Mr. G. have a policy that no student will be turned away due to an inability to pay. Please contact one of the directors directly if your student needs assistance with tuition. Requests will be handled privately.

Drumline—Mandatory One-Time-Only Meeting June 1

If you are interested in playing in the Drumline for summer/fall, please mark your calendar for the Mandatory Meeting on June 1. In past years, several meetings have been held, but this year, meeting space seems to be at a premium, so we will have ONE MEETING ONLY.

The date is Monday June 1 from 3:30-5:30pm at the West Salem Band Room.  This time is mandatory for all those interested in playing in the battery in the fall (snares, quads, and bass drum).  Pit players need not attend this session.  Sooooo, if you are GOING to be a 9th grader through a senior, and you want a shot at the battery you must be there!  This is the only session we are having, so please be ready to play.  I am pretty sure you all know the types of exercises and techniques we use so dust off the sticks and come to play!

Orchestra Concerto Concert June 1

Monday June 1 is the orchestra concerto concert featuring wind ensemble members in the orchestra, Brendan Pavelek on Trumpet, and Anna Stipe on Bassoon. This concert will be an annual event - our  most talented seniors will be invited by directors to play a movement of a concerto for an audience on the last orchestra concert students from band, choir, and orchestra will be featured. Audience is welcome to attend at 7pm. More information for students playing in the orchestra will be made available over the next 2 weeks. Thanks . . .

All band and color guard students are invited to attend the first portion of the audition: a live-band conducting audition, color guard skills demonstration, and student interviews of the candidates.  This portion typically lasts from 2:45-4:15.

Reminder: Return Concert Attire

All band students were supposed to return their concert attire after the May 28 concert. If your band student has not returned his/her concert attire, please ensure that it is returned immediately. Thank you!

Two Thank Yous & An Upcoming Raffle Items Needed

·         Thank you to all the parents who provided cookies and lemonade for the band awards Tuesday night.  The students and parents appreciate your willingness to help make the night a special one.

·         Thanks to all who helped with the bake sale and raffle during the Pre-State Concert!  We are fundraising to purchase more garment bags, hangars and a plume bag.  The band's portion of the proceeds garnered about 1/3rd of the amount needed!

We will be holding a raffle during the end of year concert on May 28th and are looking for donated items.  If anyone wishes to donate, please contact me at conniephillips1956@yahoo.com or 503-391-6082. 

Some of the raffle items being offered are: 

1:  Photography session with Stalnaker's Studios (Junior parents -- think senior photos!);

Late, late edition

Competition Wrap-Up at U of O’s Festival of Bands Reaps Prelim Sweep, 2A Championship

Although this late edition brings old news, it can’t go without saying how stellar the WSHS Marching Band performed in this, their final competitive performance of the year. In the same fashion of the three previous competitions, the band placed first in high score in the preliminary show. Going out in final performance style, the band took EVERY SINGLE “Caption Award” for their performances. Placing 4th overall in finals competition with the highest score in the school’s history, the final performance garnered a score of 90+ points, separating them just a few points from the “Open” class powerhouse bands. During the finals award ceremony, the band was presented their 2A Championship trophy and ALSO won the “Best Solo” award for all of the soloists playing in the show.

2A Champs!!! After a preliminary sweep of all caption awards and high score, WSHS Marching Band was presented with the Championship Trophy for winning the overall points in the 2A Competition group. Great job kids! The inscription reads “NAFPA 2008 AA Class Champions”

Winter Drumline Information Meeting, Monday, Nov. 10

There will be a short meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Commons to gather and give out information on this year’s Winter Drumline. Discussed at this past Tuesday’s band meeting, the color guard and drum line will compete in separate classes and be separate from each other. The color guard will have a separate meeting and notification. If you have any interest for this year’s Winter Drum Line, this is the meeting you must attend to gather the necessary information, costs, preliminary schedule, and more.

Band Awards Night—Nov. 13

This year’s band awards will be held at 7 p.m. (to approximately 9 p.m.) in the school Commons area. We understand this conflicts with the “Crystal Apple” awards rally for Mr. Rundquist, but there was no other reasonable date available to schedule this differently. Please join us to honor the band members and the entire team of our 2A champs!

Auction—Sold Out!

Looks like tickets are sold out (if you missed out and really want to go, let me know, there may be some tickets available but not at specific tables). Music Boosters has three tables this year that is one more than last year. Thanks everyone! That is great! However, we are still in need of donations, big or small—all are appreciated. Just e-mail Scotti at ndrsmom@comcast.net or give her a call at (503) 269-0887. The deadline for items to be considered for verbal auction is the 6th (Scotti needs them by that date) for the silent auction the 13th. We have some great auction items, about 5 or 6 right now, let’s shoot for 10.

We still need a few volunteers to help set up the morning of the auction from about 8am-11am, parents and or students are welcome. Please let Scotti know if you can help. Thanks, everyone!

WSHS Band Booster/Parent Meeting—SUNDAY, March 16th!!!!!

Sorry for the very short notice, but it’s tough getting people together around all of these events, rehearsals, et cetera. This meeting is NOT ONLY FOR the existing Boosters/Board, but is also intended and FOR any and ALL parents with musicians in any of the band and music programs at WSHS. ALL PARENTS ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!!!! Parents’ input is VITAL!!!!! We need your input to make the programs better, improve on the processes and activities that your children become involve in, and also entertain parents’ and students’ ideas of executing the operation “behind the scenes” and the making of these champions. So please plan on attending this meeting. If you’d like to step forward for a position ON the Band Booster Board, THIS is the meeting you must attend. We try to keep the meetings to an hour, but they will many times go to 1.5 or 2 hours, depending on the number of topics discussed (see below). You are welcome to leave earlier if you have to and it is not a requirement that you stay for the entire meeting, but we do encourage attendance from as many parents as possible. Thank you in advance for your consideration to attend this very important meeting. “Winter Ensemble Places 3rd in Washington Competition!

For those folks that were able to make last Friday evening’s premier of the Winter Ensemble’s performance, the troupe to the act on the road on Saturday, March 8th to Skyview High School in Vancouver, WA. By a slim margin they placed 3rd in the competition but 1st in the hearts of most of the spectators, ALL of the parents in attendance, as well as the instructors and directors of the program. The show entitled Optical Delusion was a crowd favorite, but WSHS got edged out by a very short margin of points. If you have not seen the show, this has now been perfected to become one of the circuit’s favorite performances. Some of the comments from the directors and instructors:

Color Guard Coach, Jen Freemanà “This was our first weekend out as the NEW West Salem Winter Percussion/Guard Ensemble, and what a weekend it was! There could have been many things that could have been rough, but EVERYONE did a great job on Saturday. From the equipment help, to the food, to the STUDENTS being the best performers that they can be.... it was a GREAT day!! And, as for the Guard’s performance.... WOW!!! These performers really had no idea what they were walking into when we started this back in January, and what was going to be expected of them. But they delivered and did a great job! Of course being their coach we can still work hard to get even better, but I am very happy with their performance on Saturday. Keep up the great work!”

Percussion Director, Alan Keown: “Great job last weekend! I am very proud of how we performed and I have many new ideas for the show that we will implement this week.”

All of this will be firmed up at Friday evening’s rehearsal starting at 7:00 p.m.
