Jazz Night Tonight! May 29

Tonight’s the night for Jazz at WSHS! The Vocal Performance will be from 7:00 -7:40 in Auditorium (Admission free), and the Big Band event will take place from 7:45-9:45 in the Commons. Admission is $5 Adult, $3 Students and Seniors. Come one, come all!

We have several positions in the WSHS Band Boosters that need to be filled immediately. Please consider your time and talents toward helping our Bands continue the excellence and traditions that WSHS has developed throughout its early years.  Working together we can help keep this group moving forward for years to come. 

There are many small jobs as well as coordinator positions that have been filled or have been advertised in the previous newsletters, however the following are imperative to continue planning into the summer.

Marching Band Deposits due June 1

All students planning to participate in the WSHS Marching Band and Color Guard need to submit their registration forms and $100 deposits no later than June 1. Registration forms are available in the band room.

Please note: Dr. Nail and Mr. G. have a policy that no student will be turned away due to an inability to pay. Please contact one of the directors directly if your student needs assistance with tuition. Requests will be handled privately.

Drumline—Mandatory One-Time-Only Meeting June 1

If you are interested in playing in the Drumline for summer/fall, please mark your calendar for the Mandatory Meeting on June 1. In past years, several meetings have been held, but this year, meeting space seems to be at a premium, so we will have ONE MEETING ONLY.

The date is Monday June 1 from 3:30-5:30pm at the West Salem Band Room.  This time is mandatory for all those interested in playing in the battery in the fall (snares, quads, and bass drum).  Pit players need not attend this session.  Sooooo, if you are GOING to be a 9th grader through a senior, and you want a shot at the battery you must be there!  This is the only session we are having, so please be ready to play.  I am pretty sure you all know the types of exercises and techniques we use so dust off the sticks and come to play!

Orchestra Concerto Concert June 1

Monday June 1 is the orchestra concerto concert featuring wind ensemble members in the orchestra, Brendan Pavelek on Trumpet, and Anna Stipe on Bassoon. This concert will be an annual event - our  most talented seniors will be invited by directors to play a movement of a concerto for an audience on the last orchestra concert students from band, choir, and orchestra will be featured. Two Thank Yous & An Upcoming Raffle Items Needed

·         Thank you to all the parents who provided cookies and lemonade for the band awards Tuesday night.  The students and parents appreciate your willingness to help make the night a special one.

·         Thanks to all who helped with the bake sale and raffle during the Pre-State Concert!  We are fundraising to purchase more garment bags, hangars and a plume bag.  The band's portion of the proceeds garnered about 1/3rd of the amount needed!

We will be holding a raffle during the end of year concert on May 28th and are looking for donated items.  If anyone wishes to donate, please contact me at conniephillips1956@yahoo.com or 503-391-6082.

Happy New Year!

Concert Rescheduled
The WSHS band concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, Jan. 8, Performing groups include Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Concert Band will NOT be performing. Students are to report to the band room dressed for performance at 6:45. Concert starts at 7:30.

Music Booster Meeting Rescheduled
The Music Booster meeting has been postponed until January 13. Meet in the WSHS band room at 6:30.

Seattle Trip for Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band
Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band students wishing to attend the trip to Seattle need to fill out the attached form and return it ASAP. Please see the attachment for details.

Concert update

Hi all,

A message from Brian Griffiths about the weather and this week’s concerts:

1) No Band concert tonight. We may seek an alternate January concert date. If so, we will try to announce it prior to winter vacation.

2) If school is in session tomorrow, and if the orchestra concert goes ahead as planned, the Symphony Orchestra will be invited to play on the concert. We will discuss the availability of wind personnel Tuesday morning in Wind Ensemble.

Choir News

Happy Friday! I cannot believe the year is almost over, but here in the music department, we still have some great events to attend and enjoy.

JAZZ NIGHT:
Tonight! The vocal department will present at 7:00 in the Auditorium - no admission. Then, join us in the Commons from 8:00-10:00 for the Jazz Bands. They'll be playing Big Band music and all of our senior Soundscape members will be singing with the bands for a tune. Admission is $5.00 for adults and includes a dessert.

CHOIR CONCERT:
Tuesday, June 3 at 7:00. Chorale, Titan Choir and Concert Choir will present our final concert of the year. It's sure to be a great night!

RECORDING:
We will be recording our annual CD on Tuesday and Wednesday during the day. It is crucial for students to be in class!!! I'll have order forms at the final concert, but remember Gold & Silver Choir Booster members receive one CD as part of their membership.

WEST AT STATE:
Once again CCTV is offering a DVD of all four WSHS groups performing at State. The cost is $25.00 and we have to place the order on Tuesday morning, so please send checks/orders on Monday. We plan to have the DVDs before graduation!

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR GRADUATION NIGHT PERFORMANCE
We are waiting to receive information before we can set a schedule. Generally speaking, students need to be dropped off at the Fairgrounds Pavillion, and they will be bused BACK TO WSHS afterwards, so they may be picked up at West when the evening is over. Please contact Mr. Griffiths for further instructions or questions. Another update will no doubt be made in next week’s newsletter, but please see Mr. Griffiths for any up-to-the-minute changes.

Spring Concert, May 29
This is the big show, showing at press time that the start time is 7:30 for the show on Thursday, May 29 in the WSHS Auditorium. See “Mr. G’s Corner” below for call times.

Jazz Night, May 30

Admission is FREE to at least one of the evening’s events, it’s the biggest fund raiser for the Jazz bands and vocals, so drop on by for at least ONE of the events that evening. Please join us in a night of jazz music, dancing, food, fun, and other entertainment. A real evening out, this event is scheduled to go from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

• Choir: 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the WSHS Auditorium – “a night of Great Vocal Jazz” featuring ‘Rhythm Express’ and ‘Soundscape’ (Admission FREE)
  
• Jazz Bands to perform at 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. in WSHS Commons – “Big Band Jazz” -- tickets can be purchased in advance from WSHS Jazz students @$5/$3 (adults/students, respectively)
  

Any last minute volunteers? Parent (& Student) Volunteers needed!!!!—this is a big show and we need LOTS of help, so if you can possibly spare an hour here or there, or the entire evening, please contact either Alyson Baker or Kami Hettwer (sackbaker@msn.com and mkhett@aol.com, respectively).

Below are the main areas where help is needed. Set-up time will begin ~@4:00 p.m. on the 30th.

• help decorating in the afternoon (kids are good for that but it would be nice to have some parents helping)
  
• two parents to sell tickets on either side of the commons
  
• one parent to sell Jazz CD (IF they come in before the 30th)
  
• a few parents to help serve at the dessert table
  
• Clean-up crew (3 or 4—the more the merrier J)

2008 WSHS Color Guard Car Wash

DVD Available for “State Performances”

CCTV will once again be producing a DVD of all the West performances at State competition. This DVD will include the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra, and Choir. The cost is $25.00 and the order deadline is June 3rd. We should have the DVDs before graduation.

Checks should be made out to WSHS Music Boosters and have student's name in the memo line.

Cash should be in an envelope with student's name on the outside. Put check or cash envelope in the Orchestra Room “LOCK BOX” by June 3rd or contact Marianne Stipe (mstipe@willamette.edu) for other ordering arrangements.

We should have the DVDs before graduation. Students will receive them in class.

In a GRUELING recording session this past Friday, Mr. Griffiths is caught in one of his many points of exhaustive state of a recording session that extended over nine hours, with the last musician to leave after 11:00 p.m.—who KNOWS when Mr. G left the building, but we hope it was shortly thereafter. The recording session will be to produce the CDs for upcoming sales to be used as fund raisers.

Encore!!! Concert Attire: End-of-year turn in

All Titan Band Members: Concert attire return instructions follow. . .Your first chance to turn in will be after “Spring Concert” on May 29th

Please be ready to turn in your concert attire in the coming weeks. Those of you whose last concert is the “Spring Concert” (May 29th), you can start turning them in that night or the following day (May 30th). If you plan on turning it in at the conclusion of the Spring Concert, you’d obviously want to bring a change of clothes, change after the concert then you don't have to try to remember them the next day.

Boys - Turn in Tux Jacket and Pants only hanging in the green garment bag with your name in the front (clear) pocket.

Girls - Turn in your Dress in the green garment bag also with your name in the front pocket.

Jazz Band and Symphony will need to start turning theirs in after June 2nd. It's important that your name be attached, otherwise the school will charge you for the attire and place any student records on hold.

Seniors: If you would like to donate your bow ties, tux shirts or marching shoes (good condition only) that would be great we can always use them.

1) Periods 5,6, and 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, and Symphony Strings) have a concert tonight at the Loucks Auditorium at the Downtown Salem Public Library - on Liberty (actually, between Liberty and Commercial, just south of downtown - Leslie is the cross street) at 7pm. Call time for the students is 6:15pm. Concert dress has been detailed in previous emails - please check the blog for more information: www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com.

2) Period ½ - Advanced Orchestra - is playing tomorrow (Thursday, May 22) at the West Area orchestra concert at 7 p.m. Call time is 6:40 p.m. We will be playing after the area's 4th and 5th grade orchestras play. Concert dress has been detailed in previous emails - please check the blog for more information: www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com

3) Forms for sweatshirt orders will be available at the concerts this week and/or can be turned in by a student on Friday morning - it should take less than 2 weeks to receive the sweatshirts.

4) All Titan Orchestras will be playing on our final concert Monday June 2 at 7 p.m. Call time for that concert will be 6:15 p.m. We will acknowledge all graduating seniors as well as a few other orchestra awards. Please invite friends and family - it should be a very enjoyable concert!

5) There is no rehearsal this Friday for Advanced Symphony after school - have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

6) Many students owe money ($8, $25 or $40) for shirts and/or sweatshirts that they've already received. They know who they are. It would be nice if all the money was turned in by next Friday (May 30). Checks can be made out to WSHS Music Boosters.

Orchestra News

1) Friday, May 9th, Advanced Orchestra and Advanced Symphony students will be competing in Corvallis at the State competition. The bus times are as follows:

• Advanced Orchestra members will leave at 9am
• Advanced Symphony members will leave at 12pm (noon)

If possible, we would love your support at OSU!
Friday, May 9th
Advanced Orchestra - 10:50 a.m.
Advanced Symphony - 3:45 p.m.

1 (One) bus will leave Corvallis at 9:15pm - we expect many students to have parents who come to see the groups perform and then take them home. Students will be expected to touch base with their teachers to pick up assignments to do over the weekend. They will be officially excused from classes after their bus has left.

See last week's newsletter (on the blog - www.titanorchestras.blogspot.com) for the full information about times and schedules of performances. All performers will receive a detailed itinerary of the day.

2) Here are the important May dates for the Titan Orchestra program:

Wednesday, May 21 - Period 5,6, and 7 (String Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphony Strings) will perform at 7pm at the Loucks Auditorium at the downtown Salem Public Library. Call time will be 6pm

Thursday, May 22 - "West Area Orchestra Festival" involved only Advanced Orchestra members (and the area's 4th and 5th grade orchestra students). Concert is at 7pm, call time will probably be 6:40pm.

Advanced Symphony will meet every Tuesday and Friday this month, including the Friday before Memorial Day - we will be learning new repertoire for the June 2nd performance and it's just not ok for anyone to miss rehearsals unless they've discussed it with the directors - it is a full credit, graded course (just a reminder). Thanks!

3) Salem Youth Symphony performs their final concert of the year Sunday, May 4th, 3:00 pm
at Smith Auditorium on the Willamette campus. For more information: www.salemyouthsymphony.org.

This is a great review possibility - and we have a number of Titan Musicians playing in the SYS. Come enjoy some of the Planets from Gustav Holst!

Orchestra News

1) Thursday, May 1st at 7 p.m., is West Salem's combined Band, Choir and Orchestra concert featuring the advanced groups that will be performing at State Competitions the following week.

Students performing (Advanced Orchestra and Advanced Symphony) have a call time of 6:40 in the orchestra room to tune up and get ready.

All students entering Symphony Strings beginning next year (list posted in the room) are highly encouraged to come hear their future colleagues.

Ms. Silberman will accept a review for this concert from all students in Orchestra and String Ensemble.

2) What an amazing Titan Music program we have! All advanced groups qualified for the State competition again this year - with honors going to the Wind Ensemble for winning the overall district (the first time ever!). Choirs will perform in Corvallis at the State competition on May 3rd. Advanced Orchestra and Symphony perform May 9th, and Wind Ensemble on the 10th.

3) Ms. Silberman, the education coordinator for the Salem Chamber Orchestra, will be playing in the viola section this weekend, so it's with authority that she says it's going to be a fantastic concert. The concert is called "An Evening in Italy" - Mendelssohn's incredible "Italian" Symphony, and opera selections featuring to fabulous opera soloists formerly of the Seattle Young Opera Artist program. There is something for everyone (choir, string, winds, brass, and percussion) on this concert - making it a 'don't miss' for this year. And, it's at West's auditorium! Before the end of the year there will be an informational meeting for all students and parents regarding commitment level and expectations of each level of Titan Orchestras...stay tuned for an announcement of time and date. It will be an exciting year - we are growing by over 10% and already have some exciting plans for next year, including a special contemporary music (rock/jazz/blue) project, the Musical, and a tour (both large and small) for all groups.

Orchestra News

1) Saturday, April 12, at North High School's auditorium is the Salem-Keizer Invitational Orchestra festival. Both the Advanced Orchestra and Advanced Symphony are playing. Groups from all the district's high schools will be performing approximately every 30 minutes.

For those not in those orchestras (parents welcome!), please come support our orchestras. Advanced Orchestra performs at 11 a.m. Advanced Symphony performs at 2:45 p.m., although the performances may not run exactly according to schedule. Students, you may use this for review credit. FOR EVERY 2 GROUPS YOU REVIEW, YOU RECEIVE 1 CONCERT REVIEW CREDIT. Just think about it! You could satisfy the entire semester's assignment just for reviewing groups for 2 hours.

2) Judgement Day played here on Wednesday April 9 - about 50 students, a handful of teachers and some parents were in attendance for what was simply a really “cool” experience. Anton and Lewis Patzner and Jon Bush put on an amazing show. Many students bought CD's and shirts. We're hopeful these guys will be back again soon. The Statesman Journal was there, so in the next day there will be an email sent and info. up on the blog. Thank you to Whiteaker Middle School's Music Booster group for helping our boosters to pay for the afternoon's event.

3) Save the date - Saturday, April 26, 7 p.m. The Salem Chamber Orchestra is performing here at West High in the auditorium. Ms. Silberman has 20 free tickets, and may be able to get more (on a case by case basis). We received the tickets as part of the residency grant that the Salem Chamber Orchestra received. Over the next four weeks principal players from the SCO will be presenting master classes and coming to coach music groups at all the West Salem schools. More info. on that over the next few weeks.

Orchestra News

1) Thursday April 3, the Advanced Symphony and Orchestra classes went to Monmouth to compete in an area festival competition to see if we would qualify for the state competition in May. Here are the results:

Advanced Symphony orchestra, playing Nelson, Schubert and Wagner narrowly qualified - congratulations.
Advanced Orchestra missed qualifying by 2 points. We're hopeful we'll qualify next week at Salem-Keizer's district competition

Thanks to all for their hard work - it was an exciting (and exhausting) day!

2) A 'heavy metal' band consisting of violin, cello and drums called Judgement Day is coming to Salem. The gentlemen in this band are in their 20s, are fun to watch, play their instruments really well (classically too!), and are very cool. They are going to be playing at the Ice Box Saturday evening April 12 (open to all ages) but we're fortunate to have them here at West Salem High School for a workshop.

It's open to all string players in the district, grades 7 - 12 - here's the info:

3) There is an added Symphony rehearsal next week - Thursday 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. because wind and brass students are not available on Friday.
Strings *WILL* rehearse on Friday as usual.

Orchestra News

1) There is a concert Thursday March 13 for Orchestra (Period 6) and String Ensemble (Period 5) members. We will be closing up the Walker Middle School concert. All the area's fifth grade students will be playing on the concert as well. CALL TIME IS 6:15 p.m .DRESSED AND READY TO GO. We'll briefly tune and maybe run through our piece... then, it's concert time. I will be asking many of the members of our group to help tune and watch over the younger kids - we will have more than 200 string students all together!

Everyone else is welcome to attend - come show your support for the West Area String program.

2) Sectionals next week:
Tuesdays 4 p.m. 2nd violins in Advanced Symphony

Ms. Silberman will have time next week for anyone who needs extra help with their part (whether for the March 13 concert or for the April 3 orchestra and symphony competition/performance. Please contact Ms. Silberman to schedule a 30 minute time slot (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us)

3) Friday from noon – 4 p.m. - Symphony Intensive. Anita Hughes, Danny Seidenberg, and Noah Seitz will all be coaching our fantastic symphony string section tomorrow at our symphony intensive. Thanks to the general music boosters fund for providing pizza for the students!

4) Salem Pops Orchestra has a concert this weekend on Saturday 7:30 p.m. at the Elsinore Theatre. Remember that each student needs to do two reviews per semester.

5) The Salem Pops Orchestra is offering a half tuition (up to $500) scholarship to students who will be attending a music camp this summer. For more information:

6) Congrats to Taylor Baldwin, Bronte Loewen-Thomas and Gwen Gates on their performances at the district competition solo last week. Gwen will perform again at the State level on April 26.

Orchestra News

1) End of semester grades have been posted. Ms. Silberman will be touching base with each student to discuss 1st semester successes and to 'game plan' a focus for each student for 2nd semester. Any parents interested in that information is welcome to e-mail or call Ms. Silberman (silberman_daryl@salkeiz.k12.or.us).

2) Not too early to work on the two reviews due by the end of second semester. The Oregon Symphony Association in Salem contacted Ms. Silberman to remind us of upcoming concerts, including this next Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. Here's an excerpt from the e-mail they sent:

"Tickets are available at: (503) 364-0149 or 1-800-992-8499. Classical ticket prices range between $25 and $43 while Pops tickets run from $24 to $54. Student tickets are available at the box office for $5 the night of the concert to any student with ID. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. at Smith Auditorium. This season's remaining concerts, which are all on Tuesday evenings, are listed below. All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium on the Willamette University campus.

3) We have launched YMMP - Young Musician's Mentoring Program. Mr. Shippy and Ms. Cline
have polled their students and we have about 20 young students in middle or elementary school who would like coaching by high school students. The Titan orchestra student's commitment is to coach the young musician 4 times - once or twice a month could do it - either at school or at a house, and upon completion of the 4th coaching, the high school student will be paid $20. Also, all high school students will receive a good amount of extra credit from Ms. Silberman for successfully participating in this program. This is one of the ways we can assure that we have a thriving program here at West. Please touch base with Ms. Silberman if you're interested in participating.

4) Thanks to all for a great first semester! Second semester we have many exciting things to look forward to - newly configured period 5 and 6 classes, a 'solo' playing improvement unit, advanced orchestra classical composer and contemporary player projects, district and (hopefully) state competitions for advanced orchestra and symphony, a concert at West with the middle school orchestra too, a concert at West with the 4th and 5th grade orchestras too, and we will begin planning the big trip for next year ('08/'09).
